Can I chnage my UPC Modem& Router

my current UPC Modem and Router is terrible. Signal is poor. My horizon box is worse. Am I able to walk in and buy a modem/Router from Argos or PC World and will it work instead of UPC one. can anyone Recommend one if so

Hi, I've the same question as the OP.

Tried searching but the only threads I could find suggested asking to be switched back to the old router or another thread discussing UPC prices.

My issue is that my laptop/phone can only get 70mbps on the wifi.

I recently bought this powerline wifi extender:

as the Wifi didn't reach downstairs.

Could I buy another one of these products, plug it into the router and use to to broadcast higher wifi speed upstairs?

You can't change the "modem" part (well you can but UPC won't play along)
(cable CPE)

Your best bet is to put the UPC supplied router in bridge mode, if it has it and supply your own external router and let that handle wifi/ethernet etc.

Depends on the router, If you have the Trusty (but also ****e) Cisco 3925 you can bridge that router and use an access point to distribute your wifi.

If you want the best of all worlds this is the best method and can be done inexpensively. If you do want to have good Wifi then go buy an access point none of the UPC OEM equipment is great.

the likes of a TP Link Accesspoint or router can be bought on adverts for relatively little 20-40 Euro

You can bridge the Cisco 3925 and the Technicolor TC7200 and use your own router no problem. I recently bridged my Technicolor TC7200 and setup a Netgear R7000 Nighthawk and the difference is night and day.

Any solutions involving keeping the current Horizon box? I'm guessing the TP Link Accesspoint might be my best bet in that case?

In the amazon link above would any of the selectable products be suitable to provide wifi speeds in excess of my current 70Mbps?

TCP/IP - I'm going to have to get a new router and was looking at the Nighthawk you mention.

In another thread you said it was a nightmare to setup.
For someone who has the standard UPC Cisco router in bridge mode, it is a case of plug and play to get setup?

recommend this router?

The Cisco router is very straightforward to bridge, you will have no problems at all. As for the Nighthawk its a great router, super wifi coverage and speed.

Has anyone bridged the Technocolor T7200? Upgraded to the 240mb pack but stuck with it on 2.4GHz because other people in the house have older tech, so I'm looking at adding my own dual band wifi router.

If not would UPC allow me to send it back in exchange for the Cisco modem/router?

I have bridged the Technocolor T7200 but on the 200mb package not 240mb

Nighthawk will do in excess of 500Mbps lan to wan so you're golden on either package.

Cheers, looks like the R7000 is the way to go. Has anyone bothered flashing it with Tomato or DD-WRT firmware or is stock good enough?

Stock seems fine to me, have not had any issues at all.

Still waiting for confirmation from UPC that if I move to 240Mbps that I will not be moved to a IPV6 address as they seems to break the ability to bridge.

€121 + 15 shipping from Austria, i got a bit caught up in the bidding but it looks like a good price for it. Its described as new condition used for a few months. Time will tell.

No change to bridge mode, everything working as before after reboot. Linux box all working VPN working.

Only getting 150 though download right now 24 up. from my previous 120 line.

Ill test it again later.

All this has made me question my access point though only achieving 50% the wired speed. Will have to ditch it for something up to date.

Two questions as I'm about to sign up to UPC as a new customer.

1. Can anybody point me to a guide on how to bridge the TC7200. Lots of references to it not being able to be done, but I trust the posters who say they have done it.
2. In terms of the IPV6 address. What do I need to say to them to be able to avoid getting this? I saw some reference before but now can't find it?

1. It can be done, but you need to use SNMP and its not at all user friendly. There's a guide on boards you can google for.
2. That's DSLite, its only in some areas as a trial. If you get stung by it you simply have to.moan to them until they turn it off.

I moved from 200Mbps to 240Mbps with a bridged Cisco 3925 and no IPV6 here, thank goodness.

Let us know what they reply back with TCP/IP.

I am bridged on 240Mb (3925), but would hate to lose that option with IPv6

Nope. It showed up in the online form so I rang to check, once they realised I had an appropriate modem there was no need to send my a new one and charge the fee.

Did you phone them? You have to phone them. I was trying to be nice but the girl on the phone did not have much a clue what i was saying to her.

I told her that there is no 60 Euro fee as i already have the equipment.

I explained that i she is giving me two options

Pay them 1 Euro more per month and keep my 120Mb line and a small additional phone package.

or save 4 Euro a month and keep my 120Mb line and the same phone package.

so i either give them money or or save money and stay where i am. She could not see the logic.

So i explained that the website has 45 pm for the 250 line and thats what i wanted to me on by giving them the 1 euro more.

She went off on hold for a bit, then agreed.

Job done.

Dont do it online ! btw

Called them just now. Moved to 240mb and no upgrade fee. New 12 month contract but that suits me fine.
