    A Corner Turned?

After another poor display in the first half against Ulster last week Leinster came out and produced as good a 40 minutes of rugby as we've seen from them all season. Admittedly Ulster have had some serious issues themselves of late and did seem to fall off the pace somewhat in the last quarter, but there were plenty of positives in that half for the Leinster players and fans. Not least the performance of a back row with an average age of 22, led from the front by a fantastic performance from Conan. But a number of other players showed up well including Luke McGrath off the bench, Fitzgerald, McFadden and Dave Kearney. So the big question that is being asked now is whether or not a corner has been turned this season and will we see improvements from here on out.

Well this week may or may not give us a clue there. Leinster have rested a large portion of the squad that will likely face Castres in the RDS next week so with that in mind it will be hard to carry forward the performance from last week to this. Additionally Leinster are away from home on an unfamiliar synthetic surface. The good news is that although this Cardiff side appear a good side on paper, they don't have the results or the performances to reflect that. And while they have named a very strong side for this clash there can be no escaping that they are once again simply not living up to their potential at all. Something which is becoming the norm for this Welsh region.

This makes it really hard to preview the game. For example when you look at the back rows Cardiff should have a clear advantage. However Warburton in particular rarely delivers for them and so Leinster may well have the edge there if they can bring some real physicality to proceedings. Martin Moore returns from injury and straight into the starting XV so he'll need to hit the ground running and Denton will need to forget his last few experiences in the jersey (Munster, Ospreys and Treviso).

The most exciting element to the selection is the centre partnership of Reid and rugby league convert Ben Te'o. It will be incredibly interesting to see how both get on, however if it doesn't work hopefully people will realise that it's very early days. For Te'o particularly. Luke McGrath gets his first start since that diabolical Treviso game but should be full of confidence after a very good showing last week. It's about time we started looking beyond an out of form Boss so fingers crossed the young man can do the business. Leinster's back 3 is as strong as they've put out in a while too so hopefully the midfield can bring them into the game somewhat.

Even if this game turns out to be another poor performance that doesn't mean we haven't turned that corner. We'll only truly know that next week when we absolutely need to get a TBP win over Castres. But if we perform well tomorrow it would be a massively positive sign. Still though, given our away form and the difference in squad on paper I'm not confident. I'm going to back Cardiff on this one, by 6, and hope I'm wrong. After all what is it I read elsewhere today about Cardiff "great on paper, s**t on grass".
    COME ON LEINSTER!

Leinster by 10 for me here.

The blues have a lack luster tight five and thats where i think the game will be won.
    Jimmy to kick 5-6 pens.

This is in Cardiff, not the RDS right?

If Leinster want a BP win against Castres they'll need to show an ability to run in a few on the all weather. Ak described the Blues as a disgrace and I think that's a really fitting description for a team with those names that have performed like they have. Leinster by 5 for me.

Yes it is. The curse of the copy and paste. Could a mod correct that please? Cheers.

As for my prediction I'm going pessimistic because every time I've tried optimism this season it's bitten me in the backside. I'd rather be pessimistic and wrong than optimistic and wrong. But I am worried because we simply haven't shown any form on the road and even less so with mix and match selections like this. Things like Moores first game back and Te'os first proper run out along with some of those combinations are the kinds of things that have caused us massive issues in other games.

I don't want to curse this, but Cardiff are a really poor team. They have some fine players, but as a team, they seem to lack leadership an awful lot and lots of their international players have consistently performed underpar. I know they've got a few good results against Munster in the past, for example, but they are the type of team that completely fall apart when things go against them.

On paper, that is a strong Cardiff team and should win tbh, it's hardly Leinster's strongest pack. But I think Leinster will do it.

It's not popular and I don't mind people quoting it back to me if I'm wrong but I reckon Gopperth will go ok and retain his spot for next week.

Otherwise I'm happy Reid is back.

Will be intrigued to see how Anscombe goes.

That could happen, but leaving 10 alone the only positions where the likely starters for next week are playing is maybe one of the flanker positions and the back 3, so in terms of starting your chances are better if you aren't playing. It could also be that they genuinely don't know who will start at 10 yet.

Looking forward to this game. Big game for McGrath, can really put his hand up here if he wants and I know we're all hoping for a big game from him because it looks like we will need a quality 9 next season. The whole look of the team is an interesting one for me. I'll be keeping an eye on the centre partnership and will interested to see how Teo does. Conan will be looking to continue his run of form.

No Luke, would have thought an artificial pitch would really suit his game. Just rested?

Seems like it was a dodgy flight alright. Here's a video of Dave K recording Ben Te'o losing it a bit. From Ben's Instagram page: http://instagram.com/p/xpr0naqmat/

Bod suggested on off the ball but didn't confirm Fitzgerald issue in training this week. Please god I hope he heard wrong

Wouldn't surprise me at all. It does seem like a huge amount of our injuries this year have occurred in training/warmup

Lads Fitz is just rested, he was never going to start this game because if he did, after the European games he would have started 8 games in a row, because of his history his game time needs to be managed, which is surely the case here.

Well looking at that picture I would cast Dwayne Johnson for Ben Teo and Derek from Crystal Swing to play Noel Reid.

Just as well they don't play on grass then... ;)

Too much talent in this Cardiff team to be where they are - sooner or later they have to click. Hopefully it's not today. Familiarity with the synthetic surface has to be a definite advantage though...

And beer. Afternoon games are always justification for having an early beer.

Sky Sports just showed Luke Fitz kitted out in the Leinster changing room which suggests he is the 24th man, and therefore not injured.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,767 ✭✭✭✭molloyjh

So Denton out and McCarthy and Douglas in the row? A lot of physicality there, which is good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,153 ✭✭✭Glass Prison 1214

    Come on Leinster!

I'm really hoping for good performances from Moore, McGrath and Ben T'eo.

Great play Gopperth, and a nice support line from Reid! Great start. If it continues this way, the answer to our OP question is obvious!

They had made a good break, only for an awry offload it could have been the opposite.

Jeez I didn't think it was possible, but we've found a team who use the inside pass more than Leinster. It's equally useful for Cardiff
