Can you be depressed and not know it?

I have suffered from depression in the past and the question above might sound silly for someone who has had it before, but I don't know if it's true or not.

I guess I didn't realise I had depression the last time until I had a breakthrough - after breaking up with a boyfriend - and realised I needed help.

I am feeling up and down for the last while now. I am feeling very fatigued and have muscle weakness. It has only really come on in the last few weeks. I am a single mother with a young child who isn't a great sleeper so I know my fatigue could be coming from that, but I have no energy to do ANYTHING. I try to exercise and I am eating healthy but it doesn't seem to lift. Is this normal?

I am scared of becoming depressed again and I think I overanalyse symptoms sometimes because I don't want to be down like that again.

So I'm just wondering can it creep up on you? I have two years of CBT behind me so I am aware of recognising when things start spiralling out of control but in my tired state, I just don't know what to think.

That could obviously be depression, or it could be an iron deficiency, or just that you're tired from trying to do too much without decent sleep, or something else, but trying to guess yourself is worrying you and online advice probably won't shed any light either. I'd suggest a visit to your GP might in order, it would seem like your best starting place to me.

I think it is absolutely possible to be depressed and not know it. I have been on some antidepressants for a while now, but I walked around miserable for a long time after that and just accepted it as my personality.

You seem to have good awareness, and the CBT will probably help with looking at yourself to see how you are, as you say. But I think it is still possible. It is an mental health issue after all and you cannot always trust your own judgement.

Saying that, there could be other reasons for feeling weak and tired and having no energy. A professional opinion is the way to go here, so I would suggest getting in touch with your GP.

Definitely possible. Fatigue is a classic sign. Just remember the earlier you catch it and treat it, the quicker your recovery. Hopefully the brighter days will help lift your spirits. Try and get out in the sunshine, it really does help.

I think there are lots of people who have depression, diabetes, lots of things and not know it, so it is possible to have depression and not know it.

I would say depression can definitely creep up on you and before you know it you are depressed.

I recently read on boards someone describe atypical depression and i would say lots of people have that without knowing it.

If life isn't going great and there's no fun and only problems it can get anyone down.

See your gp and possibly a psychologist.
