The next civil rights issue

An animal rights group has been granted a court hearing in which it will argue that two chimpanzees who live at New York state university cannot be held captive because they are autonomous intelligent creatures. A New York state judge has issued an order called a writ of habeas corpus requiring the state university of New York to defend its right to keep the primates Hercules and Leo. A writ of habeas corpus requires a person to be released from unlawful imprisonment.

This case has been brought by the nonhuman rights project who claim because Chimpanzees are autonomous intelligent creatures their captivity amounts to unlawful imprisonment. If the nonhuman rights project get their way the chimps will be moved from one big cage in New York to another big cage in Florida.

Under the law, such rights can only be granted to legal persons so the judge would need to find that chimpanzees have at least some limited rights traditionally reserved for humans. And we all know how unfashionable tradition is these days. Tradition is so last century.

Should we apply human rights to animals now?

Essentially we hold our children captive too. Should we stop doing that too I wonder?

Generally. It's known as the "Fritzl Precedent".

Pedantically are they not already? Animal rights are essentially a subset of human rights - in that they are essentially the list of things we as humans allow or disallow ourselves to do with or to animals.

After all when a predator is brutally murdering another animal - we do not sit around braying about the animals rights. "Animal rights" only come into play when discussing the actions and activities of humans as regards animals.

So technically "animal rights" are really "Human rights" in relation to animals.

I hope the next civil rights movement is reproductive rights freedom for women.

Bit ironic they should gain their freedom and immediately incarcerate horses to do their will.

    Wouldn't trust them.

If the university loses the case could they just let the chimps out the front door and run amok the city without the university being held respinsible as the chimps have been recognised to be autonomous?

Great news!! And once animals get person status we can start legalising bestiality. #Equality

Would they put them down if they are not able to release them?

What like ensuring horses aren't left lingering and exposed on the local green at the mercy of irresponsible knuckle draggers & itinerants ? Sure the local youth would have nothing to do would they not ?

    Good luck with that.

It's a pretty smart idea to try and free some poor animals from captivity. I am probably remembering this wrong, but weren't these used for scientific research?

I don't think they're actively saying that they are the same as humans, but trying to use a loophole that exists.

However the next civil rights issue will be a robot trying to prove it is human. Come on Bicentennial Man.

It's easy to be memorable when you think Martin Luther King was a Soviet puppet intent on disrupting US society.

Sadly the whole Western World is in end times. Every time a civilisation in history became hyper-sexual, multiracial & gender neutral, it decayed and eventually fell apart - Rome & Babylon are the best examples. And history is about to repeat itself again. When a nation is no longer bound by blood, language or creed it cannot sustain itself because there is no common goal shared by the inhabitants. There is no natural order in this modern age & nature will punish us to restore the balance needed for the Earth to survive.

The tragedy is that people today, liberals especially, think we are moving towards some utopian society but in reality they are just embracing their demise. The 'Diversity is strength' slogan mirrors the doublethink analogy Orwell warned us about in 1984.

Where are these examples of multicultural civilisations collapsing? Japan is rigidly monocultural and facing a demographic crisis.

I was expecting a response like this. I bet you're just itching to call me a racist. Japan's population may dwindle but it will recover, they aren't going to go extinct. Anyways overpopulation is worse than under population. Too many people put a strain on resources which can lead to civil unrest. All Western Nations have signed up for mass immigration and future generations will suffer from squalor.

Secondly I am not complaining, I'm merely observing the reality of the situation. I'm not a member of some nationalist group hell bent on kicking out foreigners, because I realise there is no stopping this liberal agenda, it is like a collective movement, an organism, which had a beginning and is now coming to an end. No civilisation in history lasted forever and we are no exception.

Lastly, modern white youth are more to blame for the decline of the West than 'immigrants' are. The majority are entitled, narcissistic, useless & unintelligent who have never had a day of hardship in their lives. Your typical 20 something year old white person today is a hipster intellectual who has tattoos, smokes and lives off the back of his forefathers achievements. Most white youth today wouldn't be able to survive two days by themselves if they ever became stranded because they don't know how. They are completely dependant on the system and will die off once the system collapses. They never bothered to learn practical skills but instead spent their time debating with their peers if gender & sexuality are separate, etc AKA useless information.

The white man may have been above all others in centuries past but his time has come to an end. Asians (Japs, Chinese & Indians) are the new master race and will be the dominant force of the 21st century.

Well, given the success the PC Prog-classes are having at overturning traditionally held core societal notes (and they'd have thinkers like Peter Singer) in support, then not much would be surprising any more. It is hardly likely the baying mob of sans-coulettes once their appetite has been wetted.

I'd take modern society over your Franco/De Valera-esque dream of Catholic authoritarianism.

Society may be ok now but it's just gonna get more absurd & politically correct. Things never stay the same, it will continue to change and things you wouldn't dream of will become legal, I guarentee it.
