I'm enjoying my electronic sounds and have seen a lots of gigs and festivals over the last ten years and when I'm mandied I still can't tell the difference between all these different dance types of music. Could someone throw up a few pointers or genres and maybe explain some of the differences. I asked the question in the EP thread but most folk want to talk about the line up rather than dance types. Just a wee bit of a mellow education for us dance music newbies. :)

You could go back and look into the history of house in Chicago and Techno in Detroit, or trance in Europe but there are no hard and fast rules. However listening to varied artists will give you a feel for what's what. Each genre has sub genres hence why it can be confusing.

Thanks for the replies. Watched the first two parts of this last night, an interesting documentary about the evolution of house music made by Channel 4 called Pump up the volume, worth a watch and educational too.

An interesting documentary looking at Gabber and how its always looked upon as an Netherlands phenomenon, I was only aware of a bit of gabber when Aphex Twin would drop five minutes of it near the end of his sets, normally going into that unreleased Squarepusher track. Click Play and hit the 'close caption' button at the bottom right of the youtube screen, a word bubble should come up saying subtitles and you can get the English subtitles.

Interesting BBC Doc by Everyman from 1992 called E is for Ecstasy, which interviews ravers and E heads about the effect of the drug and their perspective on the music they are listening too, the music featured would be mainly house and techno.

Edit: This seems more of a medical documentary, there is positive reviews about taking E but the programme also talks about fatalities from the drug and adverse effects on prolonged drug taking. This post is going off topic a bit, but then again its also related to the sounds as some there is some great descriptions of the effects of the music.
