I've stayed in Los Boliches a few times. It's the stop before Fuengirola on the train from the airport. Small village atmosphere, good restaurants and quiet at night. You can always get to Malaga or Fuengirola if you want some action.

I've stayed in Ronda 4 and Ronda 3 apartments (booking.com). It's a nice place to chill out.

We were in Benalmadena last week. 20 mins from the airport. While the resort isn't really quiet, the private apartment that we had rented was perfect. It had 2 pools outside the back door for the residents of the private apartment complex. A supermarket next door, and the beach and plenty of restaurants 200 m away. And it was quiet at nighttime. I can PM you details if you want.

If you head east from Malaga, Almuñécar is a pleasant town with a bit of history, nice restaurants and a decent choice of beaches. It isn't on the beer and chips circuit so you will avoid seeing the worst excesses.

Good bus service from Malaga and handy for visiting Grenada, Nerja etc.

Nerja is very popular nowadays and would be quieter and nicer than many places mentioned here.

I'd recommend Nerja as well. Although depends on time of year. Was there once in February and it was very quiet (too quiet!) but have been a good few times other times of the year and it's gorgeous. Just the right mix of old town and a mix of tourist nationalities.

Another vote here for Nerja. Gorgeous area and not at all built up.

Thanks for suggestions. Any recommendations for accommodation in Nerja?

My favourite is Puerta Del Mar. It's a small hotel, nothing fancy but spotless. They've a nice self service breakfast with cereals, pastries, fruit etc in mornings. There's a terrace and a pool on the roof. Fairly cheap and I think best location in Nerja, just a few steps from the centre of things but quiet in the rooms.

I don't think you will go far wrong with any of them. They key is to turn left at Malaga instead of right!

Going to Nerja for the past sixteen years as my parents have a place there. I highly recommend it. If you look on holiday lettings you'll be able to get an apartment handy enough. It's really easy to get the bus from malaga airport into the bus station and then the coach to Nerja. Costs about 5 euro per person.

The town centre is your best bet but there's some other areas in the hills around that will be a bit better value. Depends if you want to be in the town much as there'll be additional taxi charges. It's not too touristy but there's some things to do about.

Lots of Irish weddings there :)

Another great spot is San pedro alcantara just down from Marbella.

There is a hotel called El cortijo blanco. They do all inclusives and the food and drink is great quality.

Only minutes walk from the beach and many restaurants.

Puerto banus is a quick bus ride down the coast and Marbella centro 15 mins away.

Marbella can be as cheap or as expensive as u want.

I'd second San Pedro. It's a nice a mixture of retired ex-pats and Spanish people. There are a lot of good places to eat, and a corresponding lack of sandwich boards with crappy pictures of English staples i.e. sausage and chips.

It's definitely quiet in the evening but Puerto Banus (over-priced hole but with a thriving nightlife) is a 5 minute bus ride or a reasonable 40 minute walk along the beach.

Marbella is 30 minutes on the bus and would be my favored evening destination, definitely the best spot for an evening out if you're slightly on the wrong side of 40 but still up for a decent night out...

Spent a few evenings in Nerja and it's definitely more picturesque than San Pedro but it's also a bit more 'resorty'.

Was considering Nerja myself but have read a few things about the condition of the beach due to the sewage plant, can those who are more familiar with the area comment on this?

To be fair there are quiet spots in all the major resorts. I know it's very old fashioned in some people's eyes but personally I'm a big fan of Torremolinos. Staying up in the town rather than on the beach.
