Note from Chinese prisoner in a Penneys sock

This is a bit mad. What do others make of it?

A note found inside a sock a man had bought in Penneys on St Mary's Street Dublin, has been translated from Chinese to:

"I am a 39-year-old man living at [gives specific address], Lingbi County, Suzhou City, Anhui Province."

"On 29 June 2014, I was falsely accused and framed by the public security leadership of the Lingbi County Government for going to Beijing to report corrupt officials to the state leaders using my real name.

"I have been illegally and forcibly detained in the Lingbi County Detention Centre (Prison) since then and suffered from serious torture and persecution. I have been maimed."

The letter then provides a phone number for the author’s brother and claims his wife, who is also imprisoned, has been beaten.

The letter ends, "Now only the state leaders or media exposure can help to save me."

Primark has provided a statement to Newstalk.com in which they say that they have carried out an “unannounced inspections” of the factory and there is no "link between the garment, the author of the note nor any evidence of forced labour."

    Serious stuff it it's true.

Article says they tried to ring the number that was given on the note, but it was out of service. Then again, who knows when it was written, given how far it may have come...

Sure he wouldn't have time to write a note in those sweat factories.

Prison industries are big Business in the US. Its not just a storyline in OITNB. There is plenty of prisoners in the US manufacturing goods and in a call centres. The fact most of them are ethnic minorities is more disturbing literally working a few cents an hour is exploitation

Yes the Chinese prisoner case is shocking, but people see it as shocking. No one is disturbed with prisons doing almost the same job in the richest country in the world, whose prisoner numbers are even greater than China

Primark would want to up their quality control

I'm almost certain the whole incident is something Amnesty International(who helpfully provided the translation) has put out intentionally to go viral. Maybe I'm too much of a cynic.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if it's true. Life in China is very cheap indeed.

What would have been surprising though is if Primark goes there and comes back and says "yes, indeed. It's all true and we have decided to stop using slave labour..."

    Pennys sorted him it out.

Not this again. Last time it was a note in English. And SOS is well known in China ? And how come it only happens to Pennys/Primark

Does China force prisoners to work. Of course is does, the US does it too.

But I reckon it's faked ,because getting caught with a note like this would bring you to the prison authorities attention. And in a prison system where Organ Harvesting has almost certainly happened in the past they probably won't be giving you a gold star.

Yes, god forbid that convicted criminals should be forced to repay society in some way! If they don't like it, maybe they should think about that before they commit the crime.

No sympathy from me I'm afraid.

A post has recently appeared on Reddit, which explains that the OP's father bought a pair of socks from Primark and discovered a letter shoved inside one of them. The letter is here and a translation, provided by someone there, goes as follows:

To all members of society who support justice, please help.

My name is Ding Tingkun. I am a 39-year-old man. I live in China, Anhui Province, Lingbi County, Damiao Town, Shatan Village, No. 6 Group. Because I went to Beijing to report corrupt officials in person, on 29 June 2014, I was framed by the Damiao Town government leaders for "extortion." I have since been shut in the Lingbi County jail. I have suffered great mental torment. My wife was forcibly locked up in a mental hospital, and both she and I have been crippled by injury! On 22 May 2014, my father was murdered in the Damiao hospital!

Please, anyone who reads this letter, please pass this letter on to our country's leader Chairman Xi Jinping, and through the media bring these things to light! Thank you!!!

Local corrupt officials have no law and no heaven. They publicly oppose the central government's policies, satisfying their superiors but deceiving the public. They cover up the truth of things. They painstakingly arrange schemes to manufacture false charges!

I resolutely support the Chinese Communist Party's central leadership and Chairman Xi Jinping's honest, people-loving good government!

    Seeker of Help: Ding Tingkun

    24 June 2015, jail
(edited typo that was in original translation, changing date from 2016 to 2015)

Now as with everything on the internet, it needs to be taken with a pinch of salt, but it'll likely go viral, leading to many questions being posed, so likely it'll be proven authentic or not in the coming days.

If true -- it's pretty horrifying that Primark would use such a terrible place for their clothing. I know they got caught using dodgy sweatshops before, but they seemed to make amends after.

Even better than that, I'm fairly sure this has popped up before and people have forgotten the first time. They get to be angry all over again!

    That's from Primark not Penney's.
    That's a completely different shop.

    Completely different.

Penney's and Primark are the same stores owned by Associated British Foods.

Reason it's called Primark in the UK/USA is to avoid legal problems/confusion with US chain JC Penney.

What about the local companies they drive out of business by undercutting their prices, due to paying their 'staff' next to nothing, any sympathy to spare for them?
