Swap 07 mondeo for 07 Passat

I purchased a 2007 mondeo 3 months ago. The car is a 1.8 TDCI LX, hatchback with 200000 km. It wasn't the car I wanted but I bought it from someone I know who minded it so knew it was looked after. It's the dry timing belt. I gave 5000 for it.

Anyway I don't really like it as it's basic bog standard and won't hold its value. I want to get a 2007 1.9 TDI Passat with similar milage. Does anyone know if I will have to part with much money or should I just keep the mondeo?

Diesel Passats are more desireable than diesel Mondeos so are worth a bit more. Whether you trade the Mondeo for a Passat through a dealer or buy/sell privately it will be costing you money to change to a decent diesel Passat. Also your logic around the Mondeo having poor resale value doesn't really work, these cars are now nearly 9 years old so will have already suffered a fair wack of depreciation. While the depreciation on the Passat is less than the Mondeo you will still have to spend money on top of what you get for the Mondeo to buy a "lower" depreciating Passat.

If it were me and the Mondeo is running fine then I'd keep it for a bit and get some value out of it, save a bit more money in the mean time and maybe move up to a Passat that is a year or two younger next year.

Oh I'd rather get rid of it now. Very informative post, thanks.

I've come across a Passat in a dealers with 155000 miles while my mondeo has 125000 and they want 1000 along with my mondeo....Good lord

Last January i was looking at a 07 2.0 diesel mondeo . it was out of a main dealer with 2yrs nct, 6mths main dealer warranty and 83k miles. Without negotiation they wanted 6500. My own garage at home had sold a 07 mondeo 2.0 diesel mondeo a few months earlier for 2700.
I know the 1.8tdis are more desirable than the 2.0tdis but i reckon you paid enough for yours to start with. Its probably part of the reason you are being quoted a grand to change up to a higher mileage passat
What Passat are you looking at 2.0tdi or 1.9tdi
if its 2.0, its gonna be one with the oil pump drive issues so make sure thats sorted. if its 1.9 105bhp make sure its not BXE engine code,
Your mondeo will have a standard handbrake , the passat electric. The passats are known for electric handbrake problems , often the switch but can be more expensive.

They'd want that to sell you an identical Mondeo to your own. Cost and profit being the reason.

No garage is going to do a straight swap as they are in the business of making money and also includes offering some sort of warranty. You will need to sell the Mondeo privately and then buy the Passat with no trade-in, to minimize your spend.

I'm looking for a 1.9 TDI. I could be making a foolish mistake opting for a car with 30000 more miles and for additional money. What is the BXE?

It probably would be best to sell the car privately. I might get 4000-4500 for it. I won't let if go for any less. I just don't want the hassle of having to borrow a car while waiting for a Passat to come up.

BXE engine code. The engines with that engine code are known for throwing the conrod out of the engine block for no reason and with no warning.

I'd doubt you'll get that sort of money for your Mondeo, here is one asking well under 4k:

i be agreeing with bazz here.
Id hold onto the mondeo for a few years and knock a bit of value out of it especially since you know the car .
im a firm believer in knowing a car, my last 4 cars were owned by friends who were changing for genuine reasons
And in a few years time update to a 08 or newer and get the cheaper tax.
