Had an old Wii before, Sports Resort was great fun, especially the archery..

Is there anything like this on Wii U?

Thinking of getting a console for Xmas, will be for a group of adults, plus some kids mixed in from time to time

Is Mario Kart 8 a good laugh? does it has 4 player split screen? I presume I can pick up the old wii controllers with motion plus and they'll still work right?

Essentially just looking for fun games

Or would I be better off with a different console maybe?

    thanks!

    Yes. Yes. Yes.

Look at old Wii games. Boom Blox: Bash Party as an example is great fun.

For the Wii U there's Nintendo Land, New Super Mario Bros. U, Smash Bros. Super Mario 3D World. You can do 2 player in Pikmin 3 and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.

I'll stick in an extra vote for NintendoLand, some of the multiplayer games in it are just ridiculous fun, like Mario chase.

Oddly, the only game I enjoyed on that was the Donkey Kong one.
Principally because I have no mates.... :(

The Animal Crossing one was pretty fun too. Whoever was playing as the police controls them separately using the thumbsticks on the main controller, which is great when you are using both to close in on a cutesy animal costumed perp in a pincer movement, and brain bogglingly difficult to control to chase two perps separately!

A more obscure suggestion is Game and Wario. Not a great solo game but it has got some really good couch multi-player games including a Pictionary one which make good use of the gamepad

Reminds me to play Warioware Inc again!
Also, I have Warioware Twisted, which is pretty mental.

Warioware + Gameboy Micro = Gaming Bliss

Mario Kart 8 is great, brilliant fun in couch co-op.

Seconding the mention of Nintendoland, a lot of people wrote it off at launch but is has some great games. Shame we don't see more a-synchronous multiplayer games anymore.

And if you need extra controllers, CEX is a good place to check for cheap Wiimotes.

WiiU needs more Maril Chase and an actual proper battle mode on Mario Kart 8. I hate modern gaming with its killing off of competitive local multiplayer.
Can't even shoot the crap out of my brother on Battlefront, I mean what's the point of the PS4!
