Very "ze Germans occupation" feel, but I'm guessing that's intentional.

    Hoping it turns out well.

    Enjoyed the pilot, has potential.

Yep, I enjoyed it too. They built up the feeling of oppression very well.

Not a bad start. Funny going straight from an episode of Man in the High Castle to this - very similar feel.

Enjoyed 1.02. Still a bit of set up going, of course, but it doesn't feel like they're in any rush with twists here and there, nor is it ultra lightweight. Decent balance between the human interaction/conflicted loyalties, bits dangling for suspense, etc.

Presumably that's Carlton Cuse? Having him on board is a concern alright.

Yeah I liked the second episode too. Good momentum. I suspect
    Will's uptight boss
may be Geronimo (it's always the person you least suspect) :)

September 11th seems to loom large. 1) Homeland Security and 2) Geronimo - possible reference to the raid to take out Bin Laden.

    Nazi thing going on too.

So, the wife, Katie, saw enough of the 'bad' side of the resistance to have doubts.

Down the hatch for the kids, Lost? Also, cassette tapes.

    Solid show.

I'm even more intrigued with this show after last nights episode, it offered a glimpse into the back-end of the operation and giving us a good view into the character of Phyllis, but than
to take it all away at the end of the episode
    .

There seam to be more and more layers in there, like who was Phyllis talking to on the phone (who seamed to be higher up than Snyder) and her remark about the visitors :
their perception of time makes that unpredictable.
    .

Only 6 episodes left this season but at least there is another one.

Now I hope I used the Spoiler tag correctly there as not everybody might be on US schedule.

I'm enjoying this. I wonder if Will might lay out some false breadcrumbs for Katie to see if she'd bring them to the resistance, but he might not be suspicious of her yet. That, plus an attack on Snyder is about to kick in.

Has anyone seen this? I've watched the first five episodes. It's pretty good. Not brilliant by any means, but solid enough.

Edit: I didn't see this existing thread even though I searched all of Boards and with the word 'Colony' more than once. Maybe the search function isn't working?

Anyway, I found this highly watchable, and it has the potential to improve as they eventually show us what's going on behind the curtain.

Been quietly surprised by this show; nothing spectacular so far, but eminently solid and entertaining, with enough spinning narrative plates to keep things intriguing. Feels like a more competent, politicised version of Falling Skies. With a distinct whiff of City 17 from Half Life 2 too.

My only concern is the same one that comes with all these sorts of shows with a central, dominating mystery: once that mystery becomes less... well, mysterious, all the tension and momentum can easily disappear. Presumably we'll learn more about the Resistance (
assuming they are who they say they are; Phyllis' role seemed to suggest there's at least another faction anyway
& the aliens behind the invasion, I just hope the show doesn't lose its drive when that happens.

Forgot to mention - It was good to see that Apollo Creed isn't dead after all :)

Pretty good with the ambush situation. I like how determined Will is and that they don't need to rely too much on guns blazing. More trouble for Katie.

I liked that they gave us a short glimpse into what other colonies might be out there and how there are different levels of people in charge which know more.#

They really put some good info in the conversations between the action scenes.

From the trailer next week looks good too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,961 ✭✭✭LionelNashe

I like that some of the collaborators are sympathetic to some extent, and the head resistance guy is becoming less so. I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out that Snyder's family are being held hostage in another colony, and that's why he's doing the proxy job.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Show is developing nicely, sort of like The 100 I expected this is be fairly generic and cliche going in, but so far it's got great promise...glad to see it's been renewed.

Explosion - bad hair day for Holloway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,397 ✭✭✭✭FreudianSlippers

I want to like this show, but Josh Holloway is just not a good actor. I've watched about half of the episodes at this stage, and it kind of feels like a chore to put on an episode.

It's a shame, as it's a strong premise ruined by that mop with a dumb southern accent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,623 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

    The latest episode was weak.

Combined with Sarah Wayne Callies who only knows how to play one part and plays it in everything she's in. I watched the first 4 episodes and felt robbed of my time because of that pair, story wise it was grand just can't continue with these 2 involved.

Now the last episode finally showed us at least some glimpse of who the visitors are.

1.09 - Hard not to think of some incidents from Iraq.

Good to see Kate and Will argue. Honestly, I remember nothing about the art woman.

Finale tonight. Hoping for some big revelations.

It was a very good finale, but if it hadn't been renewed, it would have been frustrating.

As it stands, they've set up great game board for season 2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,271 ✭✭✭Yggr of Asgard

I agree that was a nice finale because it set up a changed Season 2 very nicely with the
    separation of the family
and I'm looking forward to the new
    proxy
    .

Also the fact that the last 15 seconds where showing the
    surveillance
which I always found interesting that it was not featured more prominent because it had to be going on.

    I'm going to miss
    proxy Snyder
who I think has a nice development arch this season, but I'm sure we see him in the factory.

I'm looking forward to Season 2.

Haven't seen Thora Birch in ages, stranger still to have her on a TV show. Good finale, lonely, not everything wrapped up. Potential stories for s2.

I decided to watch this without hearing much about it because I'm a fan of Adam Busch (the teacher) but I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next season.

Looking forward to the return of this: the first season was pretty solid, and smartly managed to avoid painting the collaborators and resistance in purely in terms of black & white; Synder turned out to be the most interesting character, as we peeled back the layers of his treachery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,271 ✭✭✭Yggr of Asgard

I'm not sure from looking at the trailers. Looks like they are going to put in a lot of flashbacks to the arrival of the visitors and mix it with present day struggle. Not always a fan of flashbacks but willing to give it a try.

Any show like this has to be able to balance mystery with lore... IMHO season 1 of Colony was like watching paint dry. I find with shows that try to keep so many things a "mystery" there are usually one of two explanations (1) the showrunners don't know either (2) the answer is idiotic or obvious.

I get what you mean, and the pacing could have been a bit better, but at the same time I don't think it matters as much as (for instance) a show like Lost where the very thrust of the story was the mystery itself.

Aliens have invaded, we lost & then some, the survivors now doing their best to get by. It doesn't feel like there's a lot to unpack there, and whatever plans the aliens have for us, it's most likely malevolent anyway. There's definitely an element of withholding when it comes to the ETs mind you, but equally I can accept this as humanity seem intentionally left at the bottom of the food chain.

Point taken - if this is about the struggle of survival, then they are doing a worse job telling that story.

Maybe that's my problem with the show is that they don't seem to have a clear narrative on whether this is Falling Skies or Lost.

To me it has more in common with V and Falling skies than with lost. I'm will to give it another season but where falling skies fell down by introducing too much of the aliens/rebels/other aliens, I hope this keeps the aliens a bit more in the background and focuses on the survival/collaborators.

I'm sorry but this looks like a reboot to me.

I was happy with knowing very little about the visitors and how we all got there. Sure it's nice to learn more drip by drip but this was just too much in the past for me.

I give it another episode but if this is going to continue being a time jump glory I'm out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

It wasn't all in the past.
Looks like they wanted a flashback to introduce some new characters. Yer mans daughter, and yer mans partner

The jump back to the present wasn't marked very well though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,271 ✭✭✭Yggr of Asgard

I agree that the time jumps could have been marked a little better, but I somehow don't like this whole flashback if it get's too regular.

I can understand it from a story telling tool to bring in some more background on motivations, other possible characters coming in etc, but for me the mystery of the visitors was key part of why I liked them. For me this was more about how people go about in an occupied world, it was not important to me to see how it became that, it's what it is.

I know some people wanted to see more of the arrival but for me that is not part why I enjoyed the show.

I get what you're saying. Yeah, they should be careful with how much line they want to cross in terms of the mystery.

They have / had (depending on where this season goes) multiple elements going on. They risk breaking their formula if they go off and focus too much on any of them.

I remember at least these themes:
    - official policing side
    - shady political side
    - family life
    - how to get by in the situation
    - undercover resistance
    - confrontational resistance
    - spooky alien plot

Maybe it's a thing for their seasons first episodes to splash some cash on effects to lure audience in.
