Recommended cars for a 10k budget

    Hi all,

I need to buy a new car within the next 8 weeks - NCT expiring end of March 2016 & tax due on old car end of April 2016. My 02 Nissan Primera - 1.6 petrol failed the NCT at the weekend and after owning it from 2006 it's time to finally change.

    Details:

    Budget €10k.
    Annual Mileage 10,000km.
No kids just me and my OH.
Interested in a saloon car such as the Honda Civic or Mazda.
Would prefer a 12 reg or newer but I realise this is probably out of my budget.

I'm not sure what engine size these models come in and which I should go for?

I'd probably buy from a dealer but might consider the
auction route but I don't think these particular models come up that often.

Incidentily, would I get anything off a trade in on the Primera do you think;)

Any advice appreciated. I don't know much about cars so I would love to hear any suggestions at what cars I should be looking at, anything else I should be considering :)

would yo have kept the Nissan if it hadnt failed the nct, I would assume a fail on that type of car isnt going to be too serious, is it not worth getting the work done?

    Cost of fixing the Nissan = €200 + possibly €200 more + €200 tax(3 months worth) = €600

Prices for fixing the problems gotten from a mate who is a mechanic.

That's not a huge outlay to keep the Primera on the road considering your low annual mileage. Of course if you just want a change then that's a different matter.

If its that cheap to get fixed, if you arent going to keep it, it would still be worth a good bit more with the nct and easier to sell.. the motor tax at only E514, I would pay that amount in one lump personally... with your mileage, you are looking at petrol, the motor tax rates for most of those cars would even on emissions will be €390-570 I'd imagine...

It certainly doesnt make financial sense to change, but if you just want to change, thats a different matter....

Good point about the outlay but I do want a change as the Primera has been through a lot and I want to change before something major goes, which might cost €€€

Good point about the NCT alright, I might reconsider paying for the repairs if I could get more for it with a valid NCT.

Honda Civic saloon was discontinued since about 2010.

WTF! I didn't realise that, can anyone else confirm this please? Is it a bad idea to buy a model of car that has been discontinued?

The last Civic saloon was launched back in 2006 and loosely shared parts with the European Civic hatchback launched around the same time. In 2011 the European Civic hatchback was replaced with a newer model but the saloon was never replaced in Europe because of poor sales. The saloon was also available as a IMA hybrid which you might find a few left over 2011/2012 registered models.

Cheers for the info Bazz26, I'm a little concerned now that it may not be a good idea to purchase a car model that has been discontinued :(

Not necessarily. Almost all cars have a lifespan of around 6 years, excluding minor facelifts. For example the newest Ford Mondeo is a fundamentally different car to the outgoing model. The old car has been discontinued, but the name and badge remain.

It doesn't make the old Mondeo a bad car by Ny means, the worst part about it is that people will see you have the 'old' Mondeo rather than a new one.

In some cases, if the car has been entirely discontinued, including the name, that can work to your favour as there is no new model around to make yours look outdated.

Another good example I think is the Mk5 Golf.

The Mk6 was so much different to it, that a Mk5 still looks alright. The Mk7 was too similar to the 6 though, making the 6 look outdated.

On a side note, the Mk6 Golf was just a facelifted Mk5 with a cheaper suspension setup. The Mk7 Golf was a new car from the ground up.

I wouldn't worry about the Civic saloon being discontinued, it just means they become cheaper to buy as they get older. The reason they stopped selling them here was because they were not cheap when new and engine sizes and motor tax were outside what the Irish would consider the norm. Most mechanical components are similar between the various Civic models so parts should not be an issue either.

I've added up couple of saloon petrol models to consider. Any opinions on these please?

Toyota Corolla (2011+) - not sure which exact model or what petrol engine I'd need with this?
    Mitsubishi Lancer

That model Corolla is a bit of a let down, it's not very big on interior space and alot of the materials used look very cheap and low rent. The only redeeming feature is that they are reliable and dependable. I'd have a saloon Civic over one to be honest. Your choice in small saloons is fairly limited too.

    Hi Movie Maestro

Did you ever change your car?

Primera are a great can (IMO) - I've had 4 of them over the last 20 years.
If you got a P12 with a reversing camera - your going to find it hard to get a similar spec.

But if you do want to change (presuming you have not done so already) - there are loads of choices
    - 06/07/08 Primera (go for a higher spec - 1.8 auto, T-sec, etc). Plenty of these for around €2k - €5k
    - Toyotas all good but perhaps over-priced (IMO) for what you get spec-wise
    - Honda (the primera discontinued in 2008). Not so much of an issue. But depends on how many units were originally sold (spares etc)
    - Madza, Opel
    - Nissan: Would you consider a Note. Some nice models around between 8 - 11k. I don't like the Tida
    - Renault Fluence/Scenic/Clio
    - VW/Skoda - ??? have very good reviews but hard to find a good model (reasonable milage) in the 10k mark

    Please post what you decided

    Hi Bravobabe,

I haven't changed my car yet. I've actually managed to get a loan of a 05 Octavia which I'll be driving for a couple of months while I decide what car to buy. I'm selling my Primera privately.

I'm considering 2011+ Qashqai's at the minute but am finding it VERY difficult to see any petrol models for my new 12K budget :) I wouldn't be interested in a Note.

I do like the look of the Toyota Corolla so am not ruling that out. The Mazda 3 saloon is another option. What size petrol engines are the best to be looking at here?

At this stage I think I'm moving away from the Honda Civic Saloon as I just don't really want to be driving a 2010 model.

Renault Fluence/Scenic/Clio/Skoda - no interest in these right now :)
