Planning a trip away with the other half in August and have narrowed it down to either of the above. Basically just looking for sun, decent beach and a bit of nightlife. Not too pushed on sightseeing etc. Can anyone from experience advise on which would suit

Hiya, I haven't been to Mexico but have visited Puerto Rico a couple of times. San Juan is a beautiful culturally rich capital with great dining and nightlife. But the highlight was spending a few days on the Spanish Virgin Islands of Vieques and Culebra, both incredibly beautiful and un-developed. You can have a picture perfect beach all to yourself with immense snorkelling. It really is paradise. I have to also suggest St John on the Virgin Islands if you are looking for a relaxing break with sun and terrific beaches. I think the Mexican Riviera is a lot more developed and focused on night life.

Puerto del Carmel is in Lanzatote, and Puerto Rico is Gran Canaria, Alternatively Playa Del Carmen is Mexico and Puerto Rico is in that region

Personally I'd sway towards Puerto Del Carmen, 10 minutes from the airport, Sun and hot in August are guaranteed, night-life is the best of the Island in Puerto Del Carmen, quite good but not extreme like Magiluf. No High-Rise building so most accommodation is clean and cheap at that too.

I second Puerto Del Carmen, lovely spot. I definately prefer it to Puerto Rico anyway.

The area between Puerto Rico and Mogan is lovely as the whole stretch of coastline is very beautiful. It's more for if you want a quiet relaxing holiday to get away from it all possibly somewhere near Amadores beach which is nice but Puerto Rico itself is really not great. That's just my opinion.

I know Puerto del Carmen really well although I've never stayed in the actual centre. I've stayed in the Old Town for weeks at a time in an apartment overlooking the harbour which is really nice away from the hustle and bustle of Puerto del Carmen but still within easy reach. There are some great restaurants up around the Old Town and harbour area. I've also stayed in Los Pocillos which again is just outside Puerto del Carmen, is quieter with a great beach and promenade and easily walkable into PdC if you are fit but taxis are plentiful and you get the best of both worlds.

Puerto del Carmen definitely has a better selection of restaurants than Puerto Rico some of which are really good and nightlife would be better aswell.
