After an epic day yesterday, the Giro leaves Praia a Mare with a much more sprinter friendly stage. That’s not to say flat however; there are certainly some inclines to be dealth with. The first 30km is entirely uphill, peaking with the cat 3 Fortino climb. The next 170km are rolling terrain, although there are no more categorised climbs. Categorised climbs aren’t always the ones which make the difference however, as we found out on stage 4. The final 30km are relatively flat, but the last kilometre to Benevito kicks up, with the final turn coming 200m out and up a paved road at 3.4%.

    Contenders

The usual suspect should be back again today. Marcel Kittel is again the bookies favourite, and for good reason as he has looked untouchable in sprints thus far. Modolo and Nizzolo are two who could challenge, the former in particular like this kind of rolling terrain. Sky’s Elia Viviani may lack support but that’s never hampered him before; if he gets to the finish he will grab a wheel and he always has a chance. I’m at risk of going all cyclingquotes here and mentioning everyone, but I’ll say two more names for the sprint. Demare, who looks to have a strong lead out, and Ewan, a man who won a similar uphill finish in the Vuelta last year. In terms of a late attacker who may hope to stay clear, look to Wellens, and possibly Bob Jungels.

    Prediction

Viviani, Modolo, Ewan. Another fruitless attack from Tim Wellens.

    Random Trivia

I can’t find anything interesting about Benevento, but it is interesting to note it is Adam Hansen’s birthday today. A man who likes a late attack, and the course certainly could suit. Will we see this tomorrow?

The final two kilometres are going to be very interesting. I wonder will someone like Valverde, Ulissi, or Battaglin have a go. I remember in stage 7 in the Giro last year Lampre set up a sprint train on the right hand side of the road for Modolo and then launched Ulissi up the left for the win. Might see that again.

Just saw the Oss crash. He was lucky that didn't end up quite a bit more serious.

giant & trek rider in the ditch. Nippo rider went down and the 2 lads went over him into the ditch and disappeared for a second

Very impressive from Greipel. Absolute beast!

Fabulous effort by Greipel there all right. From that performance on a tough finish seems weird he's never won MilanSanRemo.

The giant rider was involved in something only seconds before hand

Valverde and Zakarin gained 4 seconds on the rest of the GC lads, and Nico too.

So from that it was Roche who didn't hold the wheel ahead? Bit disappointing for him after the kudos of helping landa yesterday.

It's hard to keep tabs on Valverde when he accelerates. He caught half the peleton out. Wouldn't be too worried

Though valverde was presumably only holding the wheel ahead. Only 4 seconds though so hardly something to worry about.

Nico is not much of a sprinter these days as seen in Yorkshire but there were plenty fast men in the bunch finsh who could have closed the gap

Doubt Nibali will be pleased to lose any seconds to Valverde but there is such a long way to go its hardly anything

However knowing how Nico always attracts such damning publicity (TTT in last years Tour, Yorkshire finale, Kimmage !!!) we can only pray Valverde doesn't beat Nibali by 4 seconds to win the Giro :D

Why is Heinrich Haussler still referred to as a strong finisher on sprint stages? I can't remember the last time he won anything worth mention it was so long ago.

Just watched the race...Roche didn't drop the wheel...in fact the opposite he sprinted past others to try and close the gap

But it was unfair as tgere was a big gap from Greipel to 2nd & 3rd palce but none given

Anyway I am bit bothered that looking at SKY Nico will not be let off for an attack tomorrow ..the stage suits him...but He will have to stay with Landa who is not looking tiptop and rest of SKY not looking in the zone
    Such a pity

I think Sky are showing signs that they have Plan B up their jerseys.Nico might not be let lose but I think he will be top 10 as long as possible like Thomas as last year in the Tour.
