Also Sparkling sea- if people are not interested in the SU or anything they say then why the hell are you wasting your time talking about.

Don't assume to tell me what I can and can't discuss, its an open forum where people are free to give their opinions on any topic they choose - are you a bit of a control freak or just a member of the SU clique. Either way the issues addressed in this forum are not controlled by the SU or their cronies so get over it.

I do not feel the SU has any say when it comes to students getting drunk on Christmas Day because most sutdents don't give a toss what the SU thinks.

Just by the by I admire any one who runs in the SU elections - its probably a thankless task, maybe thats why its perceived to be so cliquey.

The SU is a compulsory body (well I wasn't asked if I wanted to pay a subs fee, I just had to pay it) - they get paid to do a job and they are open to criticism by their members if or when said members are embarrassed by something they do or have omitted to do.

Also I have elderly relatives living in the area were the statue was broken. Most people living there are pensioners and I don't think they could have to carry any of the cost of fixing the statue. The SU should address this issue and make sure no cost is incurred by these residents. Have they, will they?

Great post ! I think the SU should defo step up and cover this cost and restore some creditability and most importantly some respect with those people that live in that area!

if this was true obama wouldnt be the president of america, kathy wouldnt be WITSU president, and cowen wouldnt be where he is right now, alot of people have great ideas, eg. change. but its pretty hard to implement them

I have to laugh, there is now a Facebook group called "Xmas Day in WIT was savage, bring on RAG week!!!",

when you have a look at the group, there is loads of people posting commenting saying they broke this or they were so drunk they damamged that, all of them WIT students, you think after recent events they'd want to lay low about being apart of the troubles that took place on Xmas day.

Oh to be a student again....

Well well, look whos commenting here as usual. The SOUR people who lost out in previous WITSU elections or those who are just afraid to run because they know they wont get anywhere in life. The only connection i have is that i am a member of the students union not by choice but because i paid to support themas does every other WIT student. It appears they ye know lots about the Students Union in WIT-maybe ye should spend your time helping them instead of being stuck in computer rooms pulling each other off:P while ye type the exact same crap for ten pages. Nobody gives a crap what 3 losers out of 7,000 students thinks. Im only on here to merely laugh at the absolute B***S**T thats coming out of your mouths. Just coz Mammy would not let ye out on xmas day while everyone else was out havin a bit of craic ye think ye have the right to take it out on the people who are defending the WIT students 24/7

So what if they "advertised" it on Facebook, as far as i can see the majority of the message if about help being needed for the Belarussian Orphanage Project, there is no mention of alcohol etc just stating who is playing in the dome. Maybe thats coz students were asking them and they did as they always do and provided them with an answer. Why would they bother wasting there time answering your stupid questions when im sure they prob have way better things to be working on with exams etc approaching.

So what if the stewards got paid, fair play to them for providing jobs for some of the students of WIT. And so what if they are their friends, they can probably trust them more that idiots like ye who have nothing better to do.

Well done everyone on raising €5,000 for charity and well done to all involved.;)

And i'll prob get about 3 responses to this in the next 5 mins coz ye are all friends who have nothing better to do. GROW A PAIR little boys!!:D

Astonishing. In true Irish fashion, we have some of the biggest hypocrites known to man. Not 3 weeks ago were some students giving out about a public sector strike and some were nearly ready to spit in the face of a public sector worker for being told to have a day of stopage by their unions. Some students past the picket on the day and abused WIT staff also for been neglicted a days lecturers.

Now, 3 weeks on, we had a student Xmas day that pretty much wiped out a day or in some cases two days lecturers for a student who was really going to ensure they had the best drinking and partying done before the exmas started next week. The Xmas day event was a disgrace, with 31 people been arrested. Couple having sex in a front lawn in Lismore Park. A guy exposing himself to a young girl in a car. The grotto on the Cork Rd. being broken. Abusive behaviour, fights etc. etc.

And now, some students are looking to THEIR union for answers? Blaming THEIR union? Wondering where did it all go wrong?

Some people should be ashamed of themselves, and that's putting it mildly. Studetns who go out, drink excessively, abuse, hurt and bother others who are out to enjoy themselves on an occassion, do you know of anything better than blaming a Student Union. Have you looked in the mirror lately???

Thank you so much. That was exactly the response I was looking for. By bringing so much attention to you "not being connected to the SU", I'm guessing you very much are. Also, I'd like to congratulate you on your mature and dignified post, you really have contributed to the discussion in a meaningful manner with your "mammy jokes" and "text speak". You should be proud of yourself.

    Woooo man!!!! narly duuuuude!!!
Take a chill pill twas only a joke you were setting yourself up for a long time for that!
Grow up and stop crying because people cant see why you love being part of the sudents union people are allowed there own opinion if we dont agree with them thats up to us we dont need you crying on here about how great they are taking everything personal. I for one dont give a s**t about the union I think the college would run fine without them, the only problems iv ever had in all my 4 years was timetable problems and lecturers were more than happy to help change them for us and if they wernt the head of the school did it. And dont give me the bulls**t that they organise this and they organise that- without them rag week would still go ahead, xmas day would still go ahead every other college event would still go ahead. Life would go on get over it, yer not as important as ye like to think

Yeah it's all a bit senseless really, I was invited to that group a couple of days back! It's just kind of showing a complete disregard for the people they have offended by creating groups like that. Its all well and good to go out and have a few, have some craic etc. But when you cause damage to people and property and then brag about it on the largest social network in the world, its kind of stupid really!!

I agree , anybody creating jobs in a recession should be applauded....

so what if they are their friends

Exactly, that seems very fair , equitable and transparent for an organisataion meant to represent the entire student population...

I dont think anyone that got arrested that night are blaming the students union, and if they are they are idiots! Find it hard to believe your statement that students abused people on the picket and im sure students would of taking abuse if they walked passed the picket , which is a joke , people are free to walk where they want without being looked down at . Best of luck anyone on that picket having a go at me! These people working in the SU are trying their best to come accross as angels and didnt do anything wrong , some of their responses hear have been hillarious they sound like members of fine fail at some stages!

I think it is fair enough to assume that some of the commentators are either members of or have the ear of the student union committee.
If my assumption is right, can you please suggest that they think about finding a way to cover the cost of the broken statue.

I have tried to contact them myself but had trouble getting through, ( this is not a dig, I am sure they are up to their eyes since last week.)

As I said there are alot of elderly people living in this area and it would be a nice gesture. Many of them are not well off and further it may help to make them feel safer, if they are shown that some students do consider other people.

whoever called it in to WLR, when he was on Cathy called to apologise for any trouble, passed on her number to the caller and offered to gather money to pay for the statue. Caller said its not a matter of replacing the statue, its just the principle and he was upset at the people who did it not the union.

Yes thats it, I'm not allowed out. Not being a student I really have no reason to organise a study group, but thanks. Yes!! You are correct, it is the 21st century, but that doesn't mean you have to write your posts in the language of a teenage girl. I'm not getting into a slagging match with you friend, I am here to have a discussion on a topic, if you are here for a slagging contest please go elsewhere, also, nobody like's an internet tough guy so...

Finally, if you know who I am, name and shame me.

Okay. Im getting pissed off with these Forums.

Fact: WIT or WITSU do not organise any events in the dome for christmas day. They advertise whats going on because they Dome advertise stuff for the SU so the SU do the same for them.

FACT: the SU held back the dome from opening at 10 and pushed it back to 11.30.

FACT: The SU had both sets of people who helped out that night, Volunteers and Paid Stuarts. A small number of people worked Xmas day for the SU and didnt get paid because they pnly helped out for a short while...

FACT!!!: The SU organised 23 extra guards to help out. They knew there would be trouble so they tried to prevent it!!! They guards Clarified this ON AIR!!!

FACT: The SU Raised over €5000 euro for charity that day! All of it went to the charity as well as a donation from the union. None was pocketed to the Union.

FACT: The SU employed their "friends" to help out because they only reason they are "friends" with these people is because they have helped in the past, did a good job and got recommended to do it again. Why employ someone you dont know if you can trust to do an important job!

Seriously, this isnt even a real WITSU forum, if you have a trouble with them, go in and ask, they have openly said, anyone with any issues with them should call in and they wil deal with it, so stop being chicken about it and put a face to ur annoying voice. Idiots use these forums to give out about an organisation that they couldnt become a part of because they're retarded! Any issues in the past that i have had with the union, ive went in and delt with it. This time, its not their fault, it seldom is, its usually spastics like "imported_guy" making up rumours for his online frinds because he doesnt have any real ones. SUCK ME!!!

CHRISTMAS DAY IS ORGANISED BY THE PUBS AND NIGHTCLUBS OF WATERFORD! BELIEVE ME YOU ******S, I WORK IN ONE!!!

Another dignified and well thought out response I see. Bottom line here is, we can talk about whoever and whatever we want, so deal with it. We're not asking you to read this thread!! If you don't like what's going on here well then take a walk. Xmas Day is organised by the college, don't try deny that friend, you don't know who you're talking to here.

Can I ask you and everyone else something please? Put a stop to the insults, the bad language and the assumptions that you know who you are talking to. Nobody likes an internet tough guy so don't come on here shouting the odds, it just makes you look stupid. We are trying to have a discussion here so anyone that wants to post abuse please go elsewhere.

Let me just add - glad to see the SU taking some of our advice. http://www.facebook.com/witsu?ref=nf

    Mod Note:

Lets take it easy folks, no requirement for becoming internet/keyboard warriors here.

A little common sense and respect goes along way. Attacking posters here or members of the college/students union will not be permitted. Never has and never will be.

With regards to this forum being "offical" or not - this is and will remain a place where any individual can discuss WIT related matters. People should not feel under any threat by the college or union for what they discuss here and should not feel the need (though often advisable) to go directly to the college/SU with your concerns. If anything, the college/SU should pay close attention to what is discussed here and take note. It would be nice if they posted in an official capacity, rather then hiding behind screen names and pretending to be someone else.

    Thanks.

If anything, the college/SU should pay close attention to what is discussed here and take note. It would be nice if they posted in an official capacity, rather then hiding behind screen names and pretending to be someone else.

    Thanks.

Well it seems this debate has already had an effect judging by this new posting on WITSU fb page, or just a pure timely coincidence that now these paid positions have begun to be advertised.

If it is a result of this thread fair play to whoever was involved for acting on some of the comments by people on here. Its just a pity as Sully was saying that WITSU would appear to be hiding behind pseudo-names when contributing here.

Posting with my mod-hat off and from my observations over the years...

    1) Christmas Day, in a technical/roundabout way, was organised by the Students Union. BUT. There is always a but. The Students Union wanted to organise a day that, while accepting a lot of drink would be consumed, raised money for charity and I guess in respect to allow people have a good time before they get into the exams and then head home for the holidays.

I do not believe nor support comments that claim the SU directly organised the various piss-ups, mad sessions, damage of property, having the city under riot watch etc etc. The SU have nearly always done right by the students and those effected (residents, Gardai, Publicans etc) by events. They have worked very hard with local councillors, residents and Gardai to ensure that they are not disrupted in any way. I can confirm this from speaking with a number of those not invovled in the SU/WIT. They can not control students behaviour but can only do their best in terms of advising students what not to do.

While the event in the Dome and all associated events througout the day were organised (or partly) by WITSU it was to raise funds for a charity and allow people have a good time. It was not an excuse for people to go absolutely crazy and cause havock across the college and Waterford. Thats not what the event, or any WITSU event, was/is organised to-do. It was to raise money and the SU have always advised people to respect this. Its not their fault that people ignore their advise. I do not agree that such events should be cancelled by the SU because students refuse to listen. It wont make much of a difference anyway.

    2) The "stewards" in various estates were not, to the best of my knowledge, publicly advertised positions. Those working on this from within the SU and members/assist of the SU decided from their own collection of friends who is better suited for the position and paid them (and rightly so - its not a nice job to do for free). All above board. Gardai, Councillors, and Resident Committees in effected areas were aware of this structure. I do believe it would have been a tough task to advertise such a position. The method in which the SU did, perhaps unfair, at least guarnteed honest and reliable workers without the hassle of narrowing the selection down due to interviews and tests etc. God knows but the Gardai may also have had to look into the individuals selected. A right pain. Remember folks, the SU are kept very busy at all times without the added hassle of sorting this out. So look at it from that perspective also.

Additionally, Christmas Helpers on the day and assists for the charity related events around the college were not paid (not all anyway).

Concluding on this point, I dont recall anybody complaining about this in Class Rep Council.

    3) I do believe that something needs to be done. 31 arrests, countless cautions and chasing people around by the Guards is still not good enough. It should not be happening. Its possible that the Dome could be forced to close or open much later instead with similar restrictions placed on clubs/pubs around the town. A much harder, stricter approach may be the only way. Plenty of places opened much earlier to "cash in" on the event.

Its either that, or close down the pubs/clubs completely on the day which is nonsense.

EDIT: An article of interest on this, in one of the local papers last weekend. If you can get the paper, you will see it in full. Otherwise, a small section is available here:

Previous unions perhaps, but critically not our current union until this afternoon. Hence why its all abit too much of a coincidence.

Of course everybody accepts they dident encourage the destruction of property around Waterford on Wednesday night.

But in the aftermath of the public backlash they then went to the local and national media saying they had no part organising the day. This in spite of advertising/promoteing the events beforehand. This in my book is total hypocrisy. This was the line fed to RTE:
WIT and the WIT Students' Union have said they had no role in organising the day's events.
    http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/1203/waterford.html

If they just kept away from anything to do with the day they could credibly then say they do not support xmas day, when in reality it was only when it all blew up in the media did the WITSU change their tune. Keep the whole thing off college property and then it can no longer be referred to as a college event. The onus is then fully on the publicans in the area rather than any college bodies.

I'm not writing this out of any particular dislike for the union , but because of listening to the reputation of the college dragged through the mud on national radio last Friday and promoteing the days events in the Dome very much is an accessory to what happened last Wednesday.

this is what i have been saying for the past 10 pages.

    you-lie-2-2.jpg

oh and this picture is actully kinda ironic because WITSU is giving us the joe wilson/kanye west treatment. "hey boards.ie ima let you finish but, we dont care that 31 people got arrested because we didnt organize shiet and this xmas day was the best XMAS day of ALL time, ALL TIME YO."

I agree! We're not arguing that the SU encourages anti-social behaviour, should babysit the students, and shouldn't pay their stewards. We were arguing because -

1-their stewards shouldn't claim to be volunteers when they are not.
2-they orgainsed an event and then publicly distance yourself from it when something goes wrong.
3-they won't have a civilised discussion without resorting to insults and abuse.

Lad the Students Union did not organise anything at all in the Dome. The only thing organised by them was the carol singing and going round collecting money for the Charity this year.

Ah jesus christ - who actually gives a feck at this stage? You seem to have a hidden motive here and your wrecking my head anyway with this constant bashing of the union and mass posting of the same image. Give it a rest.

The SU promoted/organised non-drinks related events mostly and an event in the Dome. Fantastic. It was all done to raise funds for their selected Charity of the year. The rest was up to students - not the SU.

Now, I really think we need to move on from pointing the blame at the SU when its fairly clear in black and white they had barley any role in the events that happened on the night in question.

truth is here in black and white, the organised the dome event, however minor but the current WITSU regime needs to start taking (some) responsibility, i'll go back to my osama bin laden analogy, its a bit extreme, but its true, he helped afghans and americans during the soviet invasion, and then boom hes a terrorist now, all i want to ensure is this isnt done in 2 months time during rag week, and then WITSU will cry and lie to RTE again that "idindoit", and truth will be alot different.

You really are bitter about the SU for some reason, All that shows to me is that they were telling what was happening in the dome. Any SU event will have posters done up to promote them. And if i remember correctly from Class Rep Council the week before they said they had not organised anything in the Dome.

Why do you keep posting that facebook status. That doesnt state in any way shape or form that the SU organised CHRISTMAS Day. It states what musical acts are playing in the dome. The bands/acts were obviously booked and organised by THE DOME and I'm sure if you call over and ask them they will verify this. If you were in The Dome you might have noticed people going around throughout the day with buckets collecting for CHARITY.Also how do you know that the comment you have from RTE there is exactly what WITSU stated??

It's a week ago today, get over it. The guards will sort anything that needs to be sorted from here on, your constant moaning and resentment isnt going to get you anywhere.;)
