I think Martial attacking from the wing will suit him, and be the best use of him - similar to how Ronaldo and Henry played the attacking game. The issue would be how much of his energy is spent tracking back the other way - if we can reduce that, allowing him to concentrate more on attacking (like Henry and Ronaldo) then happy days.

I'm always in favour of a winger abstaining from defensive duties to be a platform for a counter.

Although City last night were a good example of how NOT to do it. De Bruyne operating on the left and not really tracking back(commentators were making it out as his lack of effort, I believe it was likely tactical) but the gaps left behind were not filled in by the City midfield.

Carvahal just had space all the time, and 2v1's kept happening.

In our setup, I'd like our left winger to stay high (our best wingers play on the left) and to have our midfield aware to plug those gaps. Schneiderlan is pretty good at that and aware, but its a simple thing to instruct a player to be conscious off. I think you can also take some risks. I think Darmian is very good in 1v1 situations, and Shaw too. Valencia is also pretty strong in that scenario. But I would be pretty concerned if we did it with say Rojo or Blind.

To often when we turned over possession this season, we have players breaking but no one in support.

I think the typical downside to that specific instruction is that the opposite winger needs to get through a shift, and it usually prohibits having two rather offensive minded wingers. I don't think any manager is overly comfortable with having both wingers just hang up high.

Remember him and Memphis building a bit of a partnership as well? Shaw will be a massive boost when fit.

How he and Darmian operated in tandum in the early games was really promising. I think Darmian is a good player, who just had some rough patches and a bit of "Van Gaal uncertainty".

On the whole, I think the two are pretty excellent fullbacks that will hopefully form part of a good back four going forward. I wouldn't be overly disappointed to see the back four being Darmian,Smalling,Blind and Shaw next season, if it can stay together, uninjured.

But appreciate that a specialist CB would be ideal.

God it would paint Woodward in a whole new level of incompetence if he actually asked the best manager in the world to wait around a year while we struggle to get top 4.

If this is the case we really are doomed, Mourinho won't touch us with a barge pole. He will surely see there is no saving us with idiots continuing to make the big decisions at the club.

    I hope it's trolling, I really do

best manager in the world that was sacked from a team he nearly left in the relegation zone?!

I like Martial tracking back. I think he finds the right balance. He gets back very well and I've not noticed him being unavailable for a counter. I think Lingard on the other side can be a bit positionally unaware at times. Being caught infield more than he should.

Who is a better manager than Mourinho?

I don't think he is the best, I think there are a few managers on the same level like Anchelotti, Pep, Simeone, Klopp, Allegri..

I think thats fair enough. 3 games for Fellaini was expected, but given the extreme provocation, Huth deserved the same ban

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,850 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Yes I think the 3 games for Fellaini was expected, it was only a case of wait to see what Huth got as its not an offence we see very much thankfully in the game. Same for both players is a fair and proper ban.

All happily employed so that rules them out of the running.Jose has a proven record of winning at every club he's managed and is available while we have a man in charge who is like a Dutch Johnny Giles talking about stuff that was relevant decades ago.

By what date would we know for sure if Jose isn't coming? Like what is the latest the board could possibly announce it (if it is even happening)

There is no date, you can hire a manager whenever you want. You'll only know for sure if he takes another job or United hire another manager.

Arguably one of the more important players in getting to the FA Cup finals, based on his performances in the quarters and semi finals.

Yeah but for example, I doubt you would do preseason with a manager who wouldn't be in charge next season so that could be an indicator.

Has the 'wait a year' mourinho story been rubbished by anyone credible yet? Seems like nonsense anyway.

Aye, there'll be plenty of clues, it just sounded like you were looking for a hard cutoff and I don't think anyone can give you one. I agree that if we get to preseason and LvG is still in charge it'll probably stay that way. ;)

My own expectation would be that regardless of who is coming in, LvG would be sacked in the week following the final game of the season. But like, the club's a basket case, so who knows.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,850 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

I think it should be apparent or else confirmed in the 10 days following our final game.. the FA Cup Final. If we were to loose that game the announcement of a change of manager should there be one of course, could happen as soon as within a day or two. If we win perhaps give LVG and the team a week or two to bask in the glow of the success before announcing ? Either way nothing will be confirmed before the FA Cup final, it's all speculation and reading between the lines until after that...

United are being linked with Vincent Janssen. He plays for AZ Alkmaar and is being compared to Ruud Van Nistelrooy, and has worked his way in the Dutch national team.
21 years old and has scored 26 goals in 33 games this season.

Our season would be over if we didn't have him in the last few weeks

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,283 ✭✭✭Smegball

Fellaini is kind of similar to Lingard in that he isn't a world beater but a decent squad option. He offers a terrific plan B option and City could have done with someone like him off the bench for the last 20 minutes last night.

The transfer fee is probably one of the main reasons that he is hated so much and possibly the connection with Moyes. He has been on around the same level of effectiveness as Mata IMO and of course gets 100x the flak Juan does.

I would be perfectly happy with himself and Lingard as bench options next season, if they start as many games next season as this then its a problem I think.

Bloody Eredivisie. For every Van Nistlerooy or Suarez, there's 30 Afonso Alves or Kuyts.

    Or Depays.

If we were going after a striker I'd still take Lacazette ahead of a majority of viable options. Goalscorer who brings the players around him into the game well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,843 ✭✭✭GSPfan

I have no faith in any player scoring goals in a LvG team so even if we bought the best goalscorer in the world he would still look ordinary and struggle to receive a meaningful pass anywhere near the goal.

The only thing I really want this Summer is a change of manager. Otherwise nothing matters.

So many quality French players around at the moment. The French squad for the Euros is going to be insane. Lacazette is a good shout. The team could use some of those French players - it would be glorious if there was a French speaking gang in the team similiar to the Spanish one we have already!!

I agree - we could sign Neymar and I'd still expect our attack to be crap while LVG blames the fans for expecting goals to be scored.

We beat West Ham and Everton, that is his level, I'm looking at the bigger picture, he has been here 3 seasons now and has played probably 5-10 good games in 3 seasons. Not good enough and to get back to the level we were at under fergie competing for the league and champions league he is not good enough

He has his place in the squad though and he can be effective. Not saying he needs to be a starter but I wouldn't go mad to get rid.

Watching LFC is depressing when you see the desire they have in comparison to us at the moment.

Its an average squad but it just shows the difference an excellent coach can make.

If we stick with LVG for another 12 months we are going to be fannying around 6th or 7th place this time next year.

    My sentiments exactly

It is truly amazing what a relatively average squad can achieve when the manager is able to motivate them. The effect Klopp has had on Liverpool and the effect Simeone has had on Atletico is so impressive.

The thoughts of being stuck with LVG for another season is seriously depressing :(

We're doing that anyways. No offence dude!

The reality of it is LVG is in charge for another season. Easier except it now than get your hopes up for managerial change.

Can somebody confirm if we get 4th somehow we are no longer impacted by any European winners? City are knocked out which is key.

Yep, a maximum of 5 teams can go to the CL so now that City are out Liverpool's run won't affect us

Winning the Europa will be better than anything we can do now

There should be p45s handed out all over if that happens, embarrassing
