Early days but eh, t'isn't the best.

Lack of dropdown menus at the top is a massive omission. No Follow Thread option that I can see. No dark theme. Mobile site is slow.

I'm sure these things will come

I've just noticed it saved a draft of this comment while I was typing. I like that!

Those who say they've broken a great site or if it ain't broke, don't fix it... Are you for real? The old boards was based on ancient technology and almost an entire development team was dedicated to keeping it running, let alone have the time to bring in new features. They HAD to do something with it. If you looked in the Feedback forum every once in a while, it would have already been explained.

And considering the sheer amount of customisations that have been added to the old technology over the last 23 years, not to mind 23 years worth of sh1tposting, it was never going to be as simple as plugging in an old database into a new site. These things take a while.

Yeah, would be nice to only have been offline for about an hour or two instead of a week, but this is a free site after all. I highly, highly doubt they're done.

Desktop is OK-ish, will take a bit of getting used to and presumably there will be progressive changes to improve it. On my phone it's close to unusable, so hopefully something can be done about that soon.

For those giving out about no dark mode, Niamh said there wouldn't be one to start with, but that it's one of their priorities after going live.

I will not criticize it just yet, as I always believe in giving something new a fair chance before deciding if it's good or not. I think everyone ought to at least give it a week or two.

Here, have some white space. Then try looking for the aubergine again and see how long it takes to find it. btw thanks for telling us it was an aubergine as otherwise I'd never have guessed.

Wake me up when it's all over.

People are always resistant to change. The text editing is obviously better.

A few problems as some have pointed out

    • Ignore is more hidden
    • Directory list of the forums I follow has disappeared.
    • In my display, at least, quoting looks terrible - there is loads of white space, then the quote, then anything written below

I' sure all of those, and more, will be fixed in relatively short order,so i'm not going to panic over it. Change is always awkward so i'd let the dust settle and see what items are to be fixed before I make any real gripes out layout or user-experience.

Soccer forum moved to groups but absolutely nothing on it.

Can't re-follow my old threads via the desktop.

Lay-out isn't easy on the eye.

Slow as a funeral to load.

Can't seem to change the time to the actual time. Posted something on two forums this morning and it says I did so an hour earlier than I did.

FB ruined their own interface with the business suite thing they introduced-this is worse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,208 ✭✭✭The Continental Op

Looks like they need a dedicated team to fix the new site already.

Wake me up when it's all over.

I think I'll log out for now and come back later on for a look. It's dog slow and hard to use on the phone.

No harm in the fixes being community driven on a free site.

First they came for the socialists...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,631 ✭✭✭✭Akrasia

They've done a decent job of replicating the original look and feel on the desktop version, but on mobile it's just a bit broken, even if you request the desktop site

I've also had a couple of crashes and the response times are much slower than the old site.

Hopefully this is down to teething issues [quote]testing bbcode[/quote]

The padding is too much, the text is too small, the border between posts is too thin. To actually be able to read any thread I have to zoom in about 150% but the poster details encroach into the post then. A bit of constructive criticism here for the guys.

Also the padding on the left is about 3cm and the right is about 9cm. There is also more blank space than actual posts.

I can only see 1 or 2 posts at a time where I used to be able to see a few.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,631 ✭✭✭✭Akrasia

f you comment on a thread and you're not on the last page, when you post the comment, it seems to tack into the middle of the thread until you refresh the page

    Your probably right.

First thoughts, bloody awful, threads missing, clumsy and difficult to navigate. On a limited bandwidth connection, barely fit for purpose.

Can there be a new forum for the shedload of posters who are going to whinge about the new site after using it for 10 seconds?

Ye all sound like war veterans bleating on shite about the good old days.

Let the dust settle, give yourself time to get used to it. It's a free site, for the 99.9% who don't subscribe.

All looks good to me so far on desktop. The mobile site is so badly lacking in basic functionality that I'm going to assume in hope that it's just a placeholder and there's a proper one on the way.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,297 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kingp35

It's a bit of a mess at the moment but I suspect that they just wanted to get back online and fix things as they go. There are quite clearly a lot of issues to fix, I'm hoping they'll get there. One of obvious one is the ridiculous amount of white space before a quoted post.

I really hope they bring back the dark theme asap, this white theme is horrible compared to the old dark theme.

They need to try fix the bugs asap or they'll lose a lot of posters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,603 ✭✭✭Ferris_Bueller

They've done a good job of making the site look the same on desktop at least, haven't tried mobile version yet.

It seems very slow so far and some forums appear to be missing and/or harder to find. Not having the drop down list of forums from the top of the screen is annoying - don't want to have to click back to the homepage every time you want to move to another forum.

Also it is not letting me 'thank/like' posts at the moment saying I do not have access to this feature or something.

I'm sure most of these issues will be ironed out and it will be as good as new shortly - bigger worry is that with the week or so it has been down, and probably another few days before it is back up and running properly, that it will have lost many posters for good.

Has the Thanks button died or something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,675 ✭✭✭Sup08

Can't see the point in the change. Not user friendly navigation thus far compared to the old site and takes 30 seconds to 60 tp get anywhere. Way too slow and pretty frustrating.

I can't find my Favorited Forums. Is there no way to save a list of my fav's?

I like it. It's gonna take time to navigate it properly but so far so good.

A bit confusing if your used to the old forum This will be confusing to use for older generations, no offence, but a tutorial video would be great.

Absolutely awful. A week offline for this. Don't think I'll be back.

    Absolute Disaster!

Threads missing and no longer available. I hope that it is just a case that they are still migrating some data.

    Search is useless

    Speed terrible

The website has been absolutely destroyed.

How do you thank posts on desktop now? I can see the new options on touch but not on desktop?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,511 ✭✭✭Purgative

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 338 ✭✭RunDMC

For me, it seems much slower, page load times have gone from ~1 sec to ~5 seconds. Followed threads seem to be missing some, but that could be just because there are no new posts. The lack of speed is the biggest problem for me.

This can't be the new site, is it? Did Vanilla get paid for this? Which Boards staff thought this was the way forward?

Not good at all, almost unusable and ugly as feck.

I think this may be terminal for me.

What you should have done is left the old forum going for a while and did a test run of a new one and did the migration in a slow pace, you completely did this in a rush. Seems like you just dump everything in one go.

I’ve switched to desktop on my mobile and can’t see the like/lol/thanks anymore.

I also have to manually adjust the screen size when in desktop mode.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,252 ✭✭✭Yggr of Asgard

I think it's too early to say anything about this new layout or functionality.

From minute to minute something changes at the moment (like thanks coming/going), so let's see where this goes once it's announced the migration is done and all functions are turned on.

So far, I am not getting a positive feeling about it, but I can see some good functions, but I also will need to learn some new behavior to find my favorite topics quickly.

Let's give it a day or two and then see where we are.

  • Registered Users Posts: 368 ✭✭tranquilo

Will probably take a bit of time to get used to. Definitely seems slow right now but that might be because it's fairly new. Hopefully improves soon

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,235 ✭✭✭✭Cee-Jay-Cee

No, it’s absolute rubbish. Difficult to navigate, cumbersome and generally all round Shiite. I’ll have to find somewhere else as can’t see myself being bothered having to navigate this clusterfcuk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,373 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Some good things and some bad.

    Slow to load

I don't need a list of all the thousands of people online at any time.

    Can't report threads or posts.

But it is shiny and I like being able to put a star beside threads.

Look call it shitposting all you want. They new site should have been all debugged before a live transfer, in their own time taking boards down for a week and then going live with this dupster fire is very unprofessional. Also the old forum was old, but it only had to do old things. A discussion forum is fairly basic, and vbullitin is updates for security all the time in the background. I would suggest that the new platform is more for monetisation than anything else.

Boards is not a amaeur thing anymore, its got its own paid staff and corporate structure, our eyeballs are thee payment and at the moment my eyeballs are bleeding looking at this trainwreck.

A week off boards also allows people time to realise how good life is without.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,741 ✭✭✭Nyum Nyum

And a forum for the easy pleased apologists too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,585 ✭✭✭JeffKenna

Yeah, when a page loads for me the list of users online is as long as the actual page. No need for that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,544 ✭✭✭blackbox

    I posted something.

Then I attempted to edit it.

    The post disappeared altogether.

    ..

I may have pressed cancel to cancel the edit, but it seems to have cancelled the original post.
