My first piercing; a nape piercing I had done on Saturday. Not too sure if I'm happy with it - the piercing itself is fine (the purple is just marker) but the bar looks far too long. Anyone else have an opinion on it? The pic itself is pretty crap, but it gives an idea of what I'm talking about...

I wouldn't worry about the bar beign too long, piercers then to do that incase of swelling.
Once it's healed you can change it for a shorter one.

Ditto, the longer bar is intentional.
Piercings like that can easily swell and "swallow" a shorter bar, so the oversized one is necessary to protect your piercing until it's healed. Once it's healed you can just pop back to your piercer and he'll swap it for a shorter one for you.

I got my first Tattoo yesterday. On my lower belly (left hip). I got a Maori symbol which has a list of meanings as long as my arm, but mainly being eternity, fertility and guardian angel.

I will try to post a picture of it later.

It did not hurt even half as much as I expected.

I had it done in Tattoo City in Wellington New Zealand.

I love it, and I am totally thrilled with how it worked out, I had an idea in mind and Ken really worked with me to tailor it to my needs. It is atcually 2 different symbols fused together and I think it works very well.

That is a very badly sized nape piercing, a surface peircing has sfa chance of swelling so it should of been sized better. The success of a surface peircing relys on it not having any undue pressure at the sides of the entry points, hence the use of a trough shaped bar. go in and get it changed as soon as possible

Ended up going to Zulu Tattoo in Temple Bar. Found BodyShock first but it was shut and a mate had recommended Zulu. I actually ended up wandering around Temple Bar for about half an hour after I found BodyShock before finding that Zulu was just around the corner :o I should be back in Dublin at the end of November so if all is reasonably healed by then I'll probably get the bar replaced. Thinking of adding to it too but I can't figure out whether I want to get another bar or two of the same size or stagger the sizes, smallest at the top to largest at the bottom.

    ehhhh what?!

    swelling = inflamation
Inflammation is the first response of the immune system to infection or irritation [Irritation being that of a needle passed through the skin and flesh]. Inflammation is characterised by the following: redness, heat, swelling and pain

Yes a surface piercing does have sfa chance of swelling due to the tissue type its going through

The tattoos are class Johnnymc, who is Chilli Joe? I am plannning on getting an Old School half sleeve or 3/4 sleeve and wasn't sure who to go with. After seeing them I wouldnt mind checking out more of his stuff.

    Who did it for you?

As far as I'm aware, her name is Elaine. She put me totally at ease since it was my first piercing.
Emmet, are you sure about surface piercings not swelling at all? I mean, I've been knocking back Arnica like its going out of fashion so I haven't seen much swelling but a mate was saying that the piercer who did his put in a bar that just fit the piercing and it swelled to the point that he could barely turn his head...

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,057 ✭✭✭amazingemmet

An infection would swell it or a badly placed peircing thats causing to much stress on the area would swell it, but it takes alot to get one to swell, its very rare to see. Its one of the reasons surface piercings need to be done with the minium of tissue trauma. if you look at your piercing theres about 2-3mm of bar coming out the end thus negating the purpose of using a surface bar in that placement, which will put more pressure on that side of the peircing which will cause it to begin migrating.

Didnt read too far back but from that pic mate, your piercing wasnt very well done.

    The obvious problem is the jewellery is too long for the piercing. The cause could be either;

as the piercing was being done the clamp slipped / the piercer got the angle wrong thus making the needle exit too early

    or

the piercing was performed correctly but the worng size jewellery was installed. Longer jewellery to accomadate for swelling isnt as much of a factor here as with other piercings tho.

    or

the piercer simply ****ed up the measuring.

Assuming they pierce anyway along the same lines as I would, they would of measued the jewellery with a calipers and then marked your skin using that measurment. Looking at the pic its obvious that the piercer cut straight through the dots they intended leaving the only conclusion being that the calpiers must of got a nudge between measuring the barbell and marking the skin making it shorter or they cant measure jewellery properly. Simply the jewellery is too long for the piercing.

Personally if I did that piercing for someone, assuming I couldnt rectify the problem there and then, I'd ask them to take it out and come back to me in a couple of weeks so I could repierce it right for free, but thats just me.

Hmmm...think I'll be giving them a ring this afternoon in that case :(

Not on nape piercings..... You don't change the bar on them bad boys. That's really really badly done. I wouldn't go back there again.

I took my arm surface ones out. I miss them.... :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,057 ✭✭✭amazingemmet

Just to mentioned i'd normal change the bar for someone a month or two after the peircing has had a chance to settle. so you can get the jewelery for a perfect fit.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,294 ✭✭✭Jack B. Badd

Alright, I'm a little confused. Should I try to get the bar changed for a better fit as soon as possible or should I wait for a few months for it to heal?

Edit: Right, just got off the phone with Elaine and she said the bar is exactly 2 mm over the size of the piercing to allow for swelling, which may still happen over the next few weeks/months. After a few months I should be able to replace the bar with a smaller one.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,057 ✭✭✭amazingemmet

Now did she say that to you when you came in the first time or did she just say that to cover up her shoddy work? I suspect the latter as if she knew what she was doing she'd know, that wrong sized jewelery in a fresh surfce piercing is the quickest way to get it to reject/migrate.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 286 ✭✭!_Brian_!

In the picture above the bend is well out of the piercing. The idea of the bend is to take pressure off piercing to help stop migration. Putting in a surface bar too long to allow for swelling totally negates the point of the bends on either end.

I'd agree with Emmett saying she prolly only said that to cover herself. I can only say from my 5 years piercing experience that I'd consider that a badly performed piercing.

    Agreed.

    This is my first Tattoo.

I am very happy with it, and it did not hurt as much as I thought it might.

Just to clear things up, you wont have been in Zulu Tattoo, you will have been in the shop below it called Metalmorphosis.

Thanks :) Chilli Joe is a Thai bloke that lives in Switzerland..amazing artist he has won many trophys to prove it. Only problem tbh I am going to find it very hard to get someone of his quality to finish the rest!

Thanks for the honest opinions about the nape piercing, amazingemmet/! Brian !/Fantasy Suicide. The niggling doubt you placed in my mind forced me to seek opinions from a few piercers that do surface piercing in my area and neither of them were best impressed. One even said it was an abomination :( Angry emails to be sent to MetalMorphosis  Overall, not the best first experience but it hasn't put me off...

Johnnymc you should see if he is at any conventions nearer than Switzerland or hold off until you get the chance to visit him again. If you found someone that good you should try and stick with him even if it means a bit more effort and cost.

here's my "thomas the walking head". literally ink scratches to what you guys have done but I'm still very proud of him. here he is when he wasn't fully healed about a year ago. right ankle. Unfortunately I had to sort of stretch my skin to photograph it without falling over at the time but just try to imagine it less skewed
