I think it looks vaguely like a 1 series BMW from the rear.

Looks good, more so from the front than the rear - a bit like the new Fiesta, the rear end bears a strong resemblance to a Nissan Pulsar(?) and thats not a good thing imo.

The spy pics always have them on big wheels and sitting lower than it will ever be in reality so.... aside from the hot versions, most examples you will see littered on Irish roads will not look so "sporty"!

Was thinking pulsar myself. It's an alright looking car but no phev version and an 8 speed auto box?

If there's a boggo spec weedy 90 bhp diesel version with keep fit Windows, black door handles and black mirrors it'll sell like hot cakes here.

I think with those 1 liter eco boost engines, the Irish car buyer will rediscover their love of miserable, underpowered tiny petrol engines that ruled the roost for a long time.
Once, the biggest car that you could possibly just about move with a 70hp 1.4 would have the punters cream their knickers.
    And 3 cylinders?
The golden age of petrol is here again! :D

I have driven 1.0t and it was not that bad ;)

Air con, sat nav, nice alloys and pretty well specced car despite being a rental.

I think the days of poorly equipped cars are gone and the stories of windey windows etc are of people who didn't have a chance to look at some of the new compact cars Dr ;)

A friend bought new Golf last year and apart from the automatic gearbox, leather and big space, it has everything I would need from a car, including parking cameras etc. It didn't cost a fortune either.

Focus would be high on my list if I decide to go pcp route, great design and handling being two main reasons.

To be fair, the spec in modern Irish cars is pretty good, poverty spec versions don't really sell any more. We still haven't lost our penchant for buying cars with weedy little engines, but having said all that, for some premium cars the amount of extra money to get say a six cylinder engine could easily be over €10,000, that's an awful lot of money to spend on something that will be less desirable on the second hand market.

So it’s a worse looking i30 and probably less economical too.

Why would it be less economical?

Those two pictures are nicely picked out. I did sow it earlier today on another website and I did not like it at all.
Focus and fiesta always had some uniqueness to it with its rear lights, now it looks like the rest of Korean crap on the road.

Take a trip 20 years into the past when the revolutionary Mk1 Focus was launched in 1998. YES thats right, 20 YEARS ago.

Picture that Mk1 Focus.... it might look like this...

    190907_50_for.jpg

I remember being blown away by how futuristic, revoltionary and ahead of its time it looked..

Now, imagine somebody asked you to look 20 Years into the FUTURE and tell me what you think that “future” 2018 Focus will look like, would you ever have imagine something as boring and generic and something with 1 less cylinder as this “New” Focus...

    So disappointing.

    20 years ago?:eek::eek:

Still plenty of early 2000 Focus's on the road too. I have a 2004 Focus as a kinda spare car and I think they still look modern and fresh. This new focus will no doubt be a great seller as they always have been no matter how boring it looks like.

I dunno how the mk1 focus is received in general durability wise, but I had two of them (an 00 hatch and an 02 estate) and they were bulletproof yokes.

I almost wish I'd never sold the estate one. It was a really nice car. Just never had air con or cruise control. Had it had those I'd have kept it. Still a lovely looking car in general.

What I would do to hear of a modern Ford Escort RS Cosworth...

They are far from bullet proof tbh. Maybe you were lucky. They give their fair share issues.

The mk1 focus was overrated by the press. They were better looking than the usual escort astra megan etc but they were as bland as anything and dated very quickly. The saloon was also plain ugly.

Ah I think that's down to personal preference.

I still think the mk1 focus is a nice looking car. Nicest as a hatchback, then the estate. Saloon wouldn't be the prettiest in the world but it still looks decent enough.

Thats the thing i dont think it will. Saw a 3 door mazda3 this morning and it's near identical. Shame on Ford for following the sheep.

For me the Mk2.5 is my favourite and I'm probably biased a little as I owned one, but it definitely had the best looks in the focus.

I remember when they came out and really loving the looks. The interior for sure though dated very quickly and looked really gimmicky and cheap next to the likes of the mk4 Golf at the time.

Tbh I think the MK2 that followed it years later dated much much worse. Those MK2’s look really tired now imo.

I've the fabled 1.4 MK II saloon (in the default "tonic" blue) that people seem to think is bottom of the list.
Admittedly it's not gonna win any beauty contents but its a really nice car to drive.
I've had it 5 years and never once had a problem (touch wood) so I'd agree its bulletproof.

The only downside is the 79BHP from Factory, of which i'd say 10+ horses have escaped over the years.
So basically it's nice to drive, ugly as feck, and weak as feck (incidentally, does anyone know how I can increase the power, cheaply?).

So if this new Focus has carried on the tradition, then it'll sell well as it'll be a great car to drive, especially since they've bumped up the horses, so that's basically fixed the one downside it had. The looks are subjective, but the effort it takes to get up a hill is not!

I drove one of these for 10 years, had it scrapped two months ago :(

I was quite fond of it in an odd way, despite the pathetic engine. I was sad to see it go in the end but its bulletproofness stopped at about 10/11 years old and it started needing €500-1000 per year to keep it on the road. The power steering went (for the second time) just before the NCT was up and that was it for me. Seemed like a waste to scrap a 13 year old car (at only 111,000km) that was working fine aside from that unit needing to be fixed, but there were so many of these for sale on donedeal that I doubt it was even worth €1000.

I like the look of that new Focus anyway, I could see myself going back to one in a few years when I'm looking for something again. I might go for a slightly more powerful engine this time though :pac:

    Good point lads ,

Those 1.4 petrol focus's were so slow and under powered it was a wonder they were allowed to sell them like that.

All the current crop of Mazda hatchbacks and SUV's look weird to me. The length of the bonnet just seems out of proportion to the rest of the car.

I would have been quite the Ford fan, owning several Fords over the years. I particularly like the current Mondeo as a good all rounder car.
But, surely Ford could have come up with a more creative design after 7 years of the current Focus, then again these cars are destined for the fleet market and merely a household appliance to a lot of families. Ford have been very reserved in their styling of the new Fiesta and this Focus.
Hats off to Honda for daring to be different with the latest Civic, I'd seriously consider a Civic over a Focus now.
The new Focus looks too much like the i30. The interior of the new Focus even looks like that from the i30.

    Spot the difference:

In fairness the Hyundai is more interesting, with assymetric vents etc.

I think the pre facelift mk2 dated horribly. The facelift isn't bad though. It looks a lot fresher than the pre facelift and hasn't dated too badly

It's nice in the picture but very few of the nicer models will be sold here, everyone will just pick the cheapest version!
