Please ignore the 0 post count from me. I had a username that I lost because of password crap. I'm not a bot.

Anyway, I see NoLita is having a gay night for pride. This makes me a bit sad because that location used to have the most awesome gay club, the Dragon. Far better than the George or the Hub :'(

Am I remembering it wrong? It did actually used to be awesome, didn't it?

I just saw a arch of rainbow balloons outside it. Turns out it's just a €30 prepride brunch event

Dragon was awful towards the end.

The number of pubs trying to tack themselves on to Pride is ridiculous at this stage.

I know right! like I appreciate supporting gay culture as much as the next person, but at a certain point it’s just chasing the Pink €uro. I wouldn’t mind if there were a load of really cool pubs/clubs because of it, but there are not.

That’s why I kindof got a little miffed with NoLita’s rainbow ballon arch. I know its not current management action but that establishment did replace one of the handful gay clubs in the country. I just think the selection of clubs is a bit crap at the moment, if Im honest

    HUB – Too seedy
    George – Too Young
Panti bar / Frount Lounge – Those are decent spots

Hopefully we, as a community, will support the venues that support us regularly, especially those that support is full-time.
Things have gotten much better in the last few decades, but it's still important to have spaces where we can feel free to be completely ourselves.

For a city of its size Dublin really does seem to have a real lack of LGBT bars. Yes yes I know, everywhere is supposed to be gay friendly these days and hook up apps have made them less relevant but I really do think we need a couple of more dedicated venues.

I was walking by a bar in Stoneybatter this evening and all the rainbow flags were out. The place was hopping.

Surely gay venues dying out is a sign that the battle is won?

The huge cost of rates and alcohol licencing is going to be a core reason we don't have more. Compare the small-for-Dublin floor area of Pantibar to the biggest gay venue in say Copenhagen and Pantibar is bigger.

Rent is usually related to floor area - although you lose more proportionally to taprooms, toilets etc in smaller premises. Rates aren't directly and a pub licence costs about 75k to buy regardless of the size.

Ongoing costs for licences renewals, late licences etc are also the same for every size pub so suddenly the costs to run a small specialist bar become insurmountable. So you end up with fewer bigger bars.

The few very small pubs in Dublin are usually family run and generations old so they don't have startup costs or even rent sometimes.

In the 1990s when there was the cash and drive around to open gay bars in Dublin, the peak paid for a licence was about 800k! The supply increased since then

Tell that to Collie Mc Quinlan and his husband, Gui.

I would still rather this happens than them not doing anything at all. I understand it's under a veil of commercial interest but ultimately, it only serves to better a mainstream acceptance.

To be honest I still prefer having gay venues.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
