You don't need to pay the price for one (about 3k retail?). I got mine for a 3 figure sum second hand. Right here on adverts.ie. It took me some time to find one I could afford, but they are out there.

So ever since I saw it years ago in Tomorrow Never Does I always admired the watch

    http://www.jamesbondlifestyle.com/product/omega-seamaster-300m-chronometer-25318000

But there is no way I'd ever pay the price for one I just couldn't justify it

It's the look, the colour that I like

Is there any decent replicas, homage watches of it out there?

OP if thats the watch you want, save and wait. Dont fall into the trap of buying homage watches or cheaper watches because you can do that now. At the end of the day it just depletes your funds and your never happy. A seamaster is a very classic and accessible watch that is a icon. You would get one under 1k and its a proper watch. I speak from bitter experiance.

That looks good, wonder how is the movement? Break after a few months or last a few years?

The Alpha Seammaster looks fairly good too, various watch forums seem to rate them decent'ish but hard to know

I agree, but on the flip side, buying something for < 100 quid is not a bad way to test drive it for a while and see if the real version is really what you want.

I bought a Seiko SK and wore it for a year or so (still do) to confirm I actually liked the feel of a reasonably large diver, before buying my Seamaster 300. The Seiko will give you a decent feel, plus you'll still want to wear it even after you have bought the Seamaster

I agree with that too. But if you buy really sharply (might have to watch adverts and the like for a few months), you should be able to flip for at least what you paid for it

Best advice I can give you is to get stuck in on https://omegaforums.net/ after that there's watchrecon

You need to hunt on every site available, save searches on adverts and done deal etc it could take a few months to get he right one but that’s half the fun.
Do you know if you want full size or mid size and does it have to be auto ?

I'm guessing the only way to check this is to try one on?

You do know also that if you want a watch and get the cheap alternative, you're still going to want the watch....

Exactly, the cheap alternative is not the same. It doesnt look the same, doesnt fit the same doesnt keep time the same. Paul Puta is a metal case but I have to agree with him on the matter of low cost watches and the waste of time they are if you aspire to something else.

Wanting a watch and justifying €3k on a watch depending on your financial situation are 2 different things. I mean, you could get second hand, but it's still too much money for a lot of people.

Cienciano I see where you are coming from with this, but for me personally buying one good, expensive (to me anyway) watch actually saved me money. It stopped me buying a cheap watch every time something flashy caught my eye.

I want a Patek, I'll never be able to afford one, but if I buy something similar, I'll still want the Patek.

It reminds me of something my wife was told at Weight Watchers one day

If you want a slice of chocolate cake, eat the slice of cake. Because you will eat everything in the kitchen wanting the cake, and then eventually you will eat the cake anyway.

I look at things a bit differently, I look at what I can afford, I can’t see the point in dreaming about a watch just be realistic and look at what you can afford to lose/spend
If you have steinhart funds then look at them
If you have omega funds then go for it
    And so on

If a Ferrari drives by do you close your eyes? Sure all we can do is dream.

I dont know, the OP is not in the dreaming realm wanting a gold Daytona or a AP...thats at a level that is not a proposition for most people. But a seamaster is an accessible watch (assuming that the OP is not totally broke with no disposable funds at all, if he is then watches are not the best spend of cash). If he has 500 for a watch this year, then in 3 years he will have 1500 and that enough for a Seamaster...but only if he doesnt waste his 500 on something else in the mean time.

At the same time, if the he were to buy a decent but cheap watch to scratch the itch (Seiko SNZH53 for example, sub-€150), he'd have something to wear for the 2-3 years while building towards the SMP.

Stuck in a cheeky bid on this watch. Looks authentic but I cannot find any photos online with a black Omega sign on the face.

Thanks OmegaGene. Watch is a bit rough so if I win off to get polished me thinks. Might get the bezel replaced while I'm at it

Fair enough, Patek's are so mind boggling expensive.

Ah but we all know what happens then. That Seiko is nice and a nice price so all of a sudden you have 10 of them, and you look at the watch box and think...well god damn if I had held off I would have my seamaster. Maybe people are more restrained than me...but it seems the journey of the watch collector goes like this for most people

Pretty certain that's a fugazi because I have one on my wrist right now which my wife (girlfriend at the time) bought for me in Thailand.

Love automatics but gave up on them as it was so difficult, not to mention expensive to have them serviced.
Factor this in to your thinking if you have not done so already.

Update on the auction I stuck a cheeky bid on. The hammer price of that Omega was £1100 (plus 28% buyers premium, plus shipping, inclusive of vat).

    The total is €1,660.97 delivered.

Wtf?!? This watch was rough, needing servicing, polish and possibly a replacement bezel. No box and no papers. I could get a nice one on Chrono24 for another €100 with paperwork and a service...

Its why I stopped going to the auctions in Dublin as people were bidding close to retail on any of the decent pieces that came up. And as mentioned 28% buyers commission is bonkers!

You'd see a lot of second hand watches on reddit for not far off retail.
