    This is really rather disturbing

I'm also not sure this format would work these days actually. Memories of when it did work, and well, don't mean it's ageless.

    This is gold.

You really can compare it to today. If this was a segment today you’d have Lottie, Eoghan or some other TY student saying “OMG!!!!!!! UUWWWHHHH!!!!!!! THAT. IS. MENTAL!!!!! OMG!!!!!” for twenty minutes followed by 80 hours of faux laughter.

It's not really, it's just the way the calls went, via the researcher obviously, but people lapped this stuff up, morning after morning.

You're right of course, people are far to cossetted these days, as you've proven :)

OK but before we lose the run of ourselves, remember there were auld lads back in the day demanding that guys like Gerry Ryan had ruined radio, and it was much better back in the time of Don Cockburn, or someone else with horn rimmed spectacles reading the news with a weird English accent.

I didn't mean the topic, I meant the digging up and editing a show to make it seem like its live, from someone long dead.

Nothing better than sheer honest broadcasting, he used to mention that some people may find the subject matter offensive and that had him covered.

What I really liked about Gerry was the fact he was empathic and helped a lot of people.

My fondest memory of Gerry was when an old school friend of mine had a boy.
The boy's name was Arran lived in Shannon, the lad had an incurable illness and Gerry gave Arran's parents and Arran so much support.
He went above and beyond trying to help that boy, he supported them all the way to the end.

Sadly Arran passed away and it was very sad.
He lived a few street's away from me.

That was only the tip of the iceberg of Gerry's generosity.

    He loved the Shannon region.

Honest broadcasting? He preached from a height about the "scumbag" drug dealers whilst finding himself unable to get through days without coke. I liked the guy but let's not forget him and his ilk fuel the drug gangs and the misery they inflict on communities across this country.

He didn't intentionally and consciously support the gang's and dealers.

Obviously he had an addiction and if you research addiction you'll find out how cunning baffling and powerful drug addiction is.

    It's not black and white.....

If he went to rehab maybe he'd realize his short comings and character defects....

When someone goes down to the public house for a few scoops and the barman knows more than likely this drunk will go home and beat the wife and kid's, is the barman supporting the drunken acting out ?

There's a friend of mine from Cork who called into the radio station about a subject and I'd say he's shtting himself hoping his voice won't grace the airwaves :D

What was really weird was him saying it was the 40th birthday of 2FM. How did they do that?

Can't bring it to work due to the windows!

Mad for it, batteries gone after 1 night.

Zero chance of anything like this being on these days...

Just piece together him saying those words, it would take ages to put something like that together

nah, he was definitely referencing something else that happened "40 years ago today" on the day he broadcast.
