This sounds anti Tesla, but I’m genuinely just so disappointed.
All promise and marketing. Zero delivery and substance (here in Ireland).

    Rant over!

You've every right to be disappointed and to rant. I don't believe Tesla are lying, they are and have always been overly optimistic when it comes to promising things. They have - eventually - delivered on pretty much everything though.

Agreed that it is great to see VW finally putting all their weight behind the electrification. We all know they can build cars well and now they build EVs well.

I dunno, there seems to be a lot of noise around the whole plant there at the moment. I wouldn't believe anything that comes out of a "well-known politician(s)" mouth in this country.

    https://www.dw.com/en/locals-views-on-german-tesla-plant-irreconcilable-as-production-start-faces-delay/a-57405731
"Production was originally slated to start in July this year. But a delay of several months is likely as the amended building plan application needs to be scrutinized by regional authorities — and the public."

Who knows what nuggets the Technoking might drop during SNL this weekend?

In light of our chat above, I had to lol when I saw this :)

“Tesla admits Elon Musk's 'full self-driving' claim not feasible yet”

    https://www.business-standard.com/article/automobile/tesla-admits-elon-musk-s-full-self-driving-claim-not-feasible-yet-121050800268_1.html

“Elon's tweet does not match engineering reality per CJ. Tesla is at Level 2 currently," Tesla's director of Autopilot software CJ Moore told the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)”

This is the type of stuff that drives me daft. Probably the engineer in me that bought into Musks rambling over the years.
    He’s a genius at deflection.

filter out absolutely everything Musk says and you’ll be a lot closer to the reality of what’s happening at Tesla.

Musk visited the Gigafactory Berlin construction site today and commented on the production timeline [via Reuters]:

It’s hard to predict with precision cause you can only make the cars when all of the pieces are here. It looks like we’re able to start production end of this year.

It seems the Texas Model Y will have the 4680 battery cells

    I fear the Berlin Model Y won't?

Interesting all the same, you'd have thought Tesla would showcase the new batteries in the plaid + Model S first. I guess maybe they still will.

Do Tesla actually have a marketing department?

Their production capabilities are pretty common knowledge their manufacturing base was minimal 3 years ago.

They famously got rid of their marketing and PR department a few years ago. They don't advertise really either.

I also saw recently that they are building more 'tent' production lines at Fremont for the Model Y to meet demand: https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-expands-production-line-for-model-y-and-builds-a-new-tent-near-ga4

My Model Y (LR AWD 7 Seater) was delivered on 22 March, so just coming up to 2 months ownership now. It's a fantastic car!

I had a few minor issues upon delivery that they took care of in one service centre visit, but also had an additional trip to the body shop to fix the boot lid that had alignment issues (they couldn't do the fix at the Service Centre). Came back perfect. Apart from that, the experience has been good so far.

The driving position is just at a nice height and the internal dimensions are quite roomy. We have 2 child car seats in the middle row and they fit perfectly and the kids love looking out of the panoramic roof. Boot space is great and with the frunk and rear sub trunk, that adds so much more room. It really is a great car for families. Haven't had too much use yet for the third row, but with the summer coming up I think we'll probably see a few occasions to test them out.

Performance is excellent as well. Acceleration is really smooth and fast (similar to the Model 3 LR) and it's a really fun car to drive. Puts a smile on my face every time.

Great, how much boot space is there with the 7 seats?

    Also, where are you based?

Irish, but I'm based in California.

With the 7 seats up, the remaining boot space isn't bad. You basically have the length of the subtrunk left. The subtrunk is around 14" deep, so you have that up to the height of the glass to use. I successfully fit a folded double buggy into the subtrunk putting it in 'head first'. Boot lid closes successfully.

The buggy is this one (for reference). It's big: https://www.amazon.com/Baby-Jogger-City-Double-Stroller/dp/B07YGVFZFH

There are two deep 'side pockets' either side of the subtrunk as well behind the wheel arches. You can fit a surprising amount of stuff in them.

I'll throw a few pics up later today.

So as promised, some pictures of the third row of the Model Y 7 Seater.

The car on delivery day: https://imgur.com/XSf8Ppq

This was the test drive vehicle that I had to ensure that car seats and buggy etc would fit. You can see the folded double buggy fits into the remaining boot space when third row seats are up: https://imgur.com/wL4ew7e

This is my own vehicle on delivery day with the third row up. You will notice that the third row seats have the over seat back anchor for kids car seats too. Haven't tried that yet, but you might need the more slimline seats for the third row. Haven't tried mine which are on the bigger side: https://imgur.com/vLWkCQu

Jumping into the third row. Fine for kids and adults 5'7" and under. Could maybe do up to an hour back there as an adult. Left side middle row seats, 2/3 pops up. Right side, just the remaining 1/3 pops up for access: https://imgur.com/GHQpDUI

The middle row moves back and forward on a rail to allow for legroom in the third row. There are 3 or 4 positions on the rail to allow for more or less leg room. The 'middle' setting allows for decent legroom in both the third row and second row. The rail movement also splits 2/3 to 1/3 left side/right side, so you have lots of flexibility in positioning the middle row (it's not one whole bench):

    https://imgur.com/PkU10wt

Rear facing and forward facing kids car seats. Front passenger seat that backs on to the rear facing car seat has loads of legroom up front. The front seat is moved back to touch the car seat in this particular pic: https://imgur.com/IelEog2

Third row down for 'full' boot space: https://imgur.com/cCIv6cg

If you are a family with two young kids that still need car seats, then the MY will definitely work for you day to day. 3 car seats, you'd definitely need the slimline seats for 3 in the middle row. If your kids are in booster seats or old enough to be just in regular seat belts, then you would be comfortable with 3 or 4 kids in the various seat configurations that it allows. Obviously the more kids you have, the more of their stuff you have to haul around as well, so it really depends on your use case. You might run out of cargo capacity. At the end of the day it's a compact SUV (CUV). You might need more space if you're a larger family and might be better off with a minivan or something like that. For the average family, it will be more than enough.

If there are no kids involved, then the MY also works really well for adult passengers. The middle row has loads of leg room. Very spacious.I wouldn't really put an adult taller than 5'7" in the third row if you go for the 7 seater option. It's a $3k addition in the US for the third row seats, so in my case was worth it for the flexibility that it allows. If you go for the 5 seater, then you get an additional small subtrunk where the seats fold into when not in use in the 7 seat version.

I just hope that the Irish price point is decent as it will match the needs of a lot of people and families that want to move to an EV or move to a larger EV. In our case we consolidated 2 cars into one (Hyundai Santa Fe 7 Seater and a VW eGolf).

What price will the Y be by the time it eventually gets released in Europe? Have Tesla Europe been increasing the prices of the cars here as frequently as in the US?

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,989 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

They havent sold the Y here yet so you can't increase yet!

In Germany the list price will be €59965 including tax. That puts it significantly above a M3 SR+ and well above all the SUV/Crossover vehicles it is competing with. Good luck haggling with Tesla for a discount on list whereas with the other manufacturers you can haggle for a couple of hundred euro(although not much more than that especially with VAG who have menu pricing).

They're obviously trying to fleece the Tesla fanboys before pitching at the mass market.

LHD Model Y's now delivering later this year to many European countries. Hopefully UK/IE will follow soon!

It may be a coincidence but I got a "Meet Model Y" email from Tesla this afternoon!

I think your post is a bit mixed up too. Model Y is delivering to European countries, I think it can be ordered in the likes of Norway already. But are we (UK / Ireland) getting any RHD ones?

    Any of them MIC?

Going to be outside of my budget but a Model Y Performance MIC would not be a bad successor to my Model S

The dog makes the call on these things in our house. She prefers the boot to the back seat, which pretty much rules out Model 3 (my own humble preference)...

Great to see how energy efficient the Y (2,003kg, 167Wh/km for the LR) is. Not as extraordinarily efficient as the 3 but almost identical to much lighter cars such as the ID3 (1,725kg, 164Wh/km) and the i3 (1,345kg, 165Wh/km). At least according to EV Database.

It even has a decent turning circle at 12m.

Your latest plan is to buy a new Model Y? I think RHD is Giga Berlin (not MIC like the rest of Europe are getting), so that would be well into next year.

No, that was the royal WE. As in Irish/RHD.
