You can't seem to go back and edit a message either, I'm not bright enough to get it right the first time usually

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,537 ✭✭✭emaherx

You can, press the 2 dots at top of post.

Edit: or cog on mobile version.

Have not tried it on the laptop/ desktop yet but mobile version is cumbersome. Tabs for new posts on a thread as opposed to a highlighted thread title.

Cannot seem to set up a followed threads stream. There seems to be more scrolling to get to the end of a page of posts.

If you look at a replied post you cannot automatically see all of the post replied to.........and they seemed unable to get rid of wrangler 🤣🤣🤣

I'm a creature of habit and change isn't something I relish or look forward to in most cases. Unsurprisingly I'm not enamored with the new site and it will take some getting used to. I haven't compiled a complete list of my dislikes yet but it's looking lengthy. Overall I'm not impressed 👎

Not liking the new site. Doesn't have the same flow to it. Will be hard to see the conversations in the posts I reckon. Very hard to use on the mobile. Can't see myself using it much to be honest. Not a good change

I think it horrendous what they done to it! If you had asked somebody to make a complete mess of what was a fairly simple site then I don’t think anyone would have achieved as much as this upgrade has. It’s like something a student would have put together for a transition year project.

Boards is the only online profile I have but I think I will be looking elsewhere for something simpler now. I was having a look around today and I see another forum you’re on Reggie that looks a better option now.

That looks so sexy. I’d so ride that all day. Girl looks nice too.

    I think you nailed it.

The previous site was simple, no frills and you could easily see what was going on. In my mind all it needed was an easy facility to upload photos.

it’s hard to see the flow of where conversation is happening with this interface.

Im also disappointed that the site and all our data has been migrated to Canada rather than finding an Irish option

Im out. I’ll be on Twitter following farming stuff there, they have made a dogs dinner of this. Not worth the hassle.

I agree with comments.............. however, it's early days. I'd say the pressure to get 'something' up and running was enormous, given the delays. I think a lot of the missing functionality will return over time. Comments everywhere are similar.

The old site was run on vBulletin software. It was nearly the default across the web with several forums I was on using it. It made acclimatising to a new forum very easy. However, Boards is a giant compared to the normal forum and recent outages have shown up its deficiencies. Boards had put a layer of its own customised software on top of vBulletin to make it even more complex.

I'm not impressed with the capabilities of Vanilla. I'd say 'management' aren't either! They will be underpinning this new forum...

But, time will tell and there are changes in functionality coming to get things back closer to normal... perhaps, better in some cases. The weather is good, there's other things to be doing in these long evenings without worrying about Boards. It's too hot not to be cool....... 😄

(Desktop site seems a lot more manageable, if only I could get it, as before, on my mobile..)

I ve always equated boards with pub talk and this is just the local getting done up.it ll feel all different for a while but we ll be back to talking the same old s##t in no time.the break from it did no harm either

Has the site and all of our data migrated to Canada though? Is it hosted by Vanilla now? Or are they just the software vender?

Just because the migration was handled by a Canadian vendor doesn't mean the site has actually moved hosting (it may or may not have)

Is there currently an Irish option for forum software capable of running forums of this scale?

You can get the desktop site on your mobile if you instruct your browser to load desktop version of site.

On chrome browser (Android version anyway), it's the three dots at top of browser and then a check box.

Don't like it, I think I'll use this as an opportunity to bale out of here for good.

Brilliant! I'd forgotten that. It may even be how I'd the old site set up. Thanks.

    Think it has.

I’d popped onto Twitter during the outage and saw a comment that seemed to point to this

I specifically noticed the use of the term “adequate” protection rather than high or equivalent protections. 🤔

Mobile version is very difficult to read. Don’t know why but it is very hard work to read and follow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,537 ✭✭✭emaherx

They'd be required to access the data for the migration and as such need to meet the same GDPR standards as a company based here, it doesn't imply they are hosting the new site. As far as I'm aware the site was previously running vBulletin but hosted by Digiweb. They are changing from vBulletin didn't see anything to suggest the hosting was moving too, although no reason it couldn't but do Vanilla even offer a hosting service?

Thing your hanging on the word adequate a bit much too, surely a company here would also only require adequate protections to be compliant.

Adequate means meets the required standards.

    Well, your probably not, but....

I'd image it's still hosted in Ireland for performance reasons. Vanilla is one piece of software running the site, there's probably Red Hat, Apache and some Database server among others, each provided by companies based in different countries and probably receiving remote support from countries like India. Personally the Canadian company is not the one I'd be most concerned about from a privacy perspective.

To answer your original question "why not an Irish company" it's probably as simple as no Irish option for this type of software and not many options worldwide.

I spent 16 years working in data centers in Ireland and I'd be far more concerned by the countries providing remote support to our banking sector and other critical services.

The time on the "latest post" screen is an hour out so this post will show 16.07 and not 17.07 iykwim.

I see that we don't have any mods. I wonder will we get carded if we're bold 😉

? I can see mods in the Mobile version of the site anyway.

I haven't found a way to develop a list of followed forums, but for threads.... desktop version.... top right of the page is a ribbon icon, tap/click that and the thread is bookmarked. To find your bookmarks, tap/click on your avatar and the drop down list lets you choose your bookmark list.

To find the F&F forum I've been going to a thread then using the navigation pathway shown in the grey line at the top of the page to go back to the forum page.
