Well done Galway…. Terrible conditions but the need to take every chance.

Could have wrapped it up about seven or eight minutes earlier if they had tacked on the points.

Solid win in the conditions. Bigger displays to come from our high profile players hopefully but good to see the younger lads doing well. Molloy, McHugh, Tierney and P Kelly were excellent. Gleeson either needs to improve his distribution of the ball or leave it to the lads that are able to use it properly, made a lot of mistakes today and put his backs under pressure. I thought Liam Silke had a good game also, he’s been getting a lot of stick lately. Goes without saying that a performance like that won’t beat Mayo but one step at a time!

Documentary on the great Joe McDonagh on RTE 2 Cloch Na Carn.

Fairly decent performance from the footballers yesterday. They struggled to cope with Roscommon's packed defense and quick counter attacking (in the 1st half) but got to grips with it in 2nd. Great performances from the two Kelly's & Matthew Tierney. PJ needs to be praised for bringing these lads through.

Honourable mentions to Damien Comer, Kieren Molloy & Peter Cooke, who all really took the fight to the Rossies. That result was a tonic and they will have a 50:50 chance now against Mayo (apologies to Leitrim).

Worrying injury to Shane Walsh who was clearly not 100% right from the start. Paul Conroy was worryingly invisible too... and needs to get more involved.

A decent enough performance indeed, if for no other reason that there were no disasters. Kick-outs generally ok, not too much messing about in defence, patience when required (e.g. first goal). Some good displays, as above, plus McHugh no. 6 who did what was required. Panel is very short of genuine class however and there isn't too much off the bench to change things around. Cathal Sweeney might be worth a more prolonged look at some point.

Not brilliant but it's a start.

(KW brought Sean Kelly in ).

Anyone know what the capacity is for Thurles on Saturday?

  • Registered Users Posts: 809 ✭✭✭Butson

Think there was 7k at it last Saturday.

Talk on the OurGame podcast of a covid case within the Galway camp ahead of Saturday, any truth in it?

Squad tested again today. We'll have to wait and see.

Speculation but one of medium importance and a sub. Shouldnt be a major issue once it doesn't cause other disruption

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,864 ✭✭✭Happyilylost

Galway (All-Ireland SHC v Waterford): Darach Fahy; Shane Cooney, Gearoid McInerney, Darren Morrissey; Padraic Mannion, Daithi Burke, Aidan Harte; Sean Loftus, Cathal Mannion; Joseph Cooney, Conor Whelan, Conor Cooney; Sean Linnane, Joe Canning, Brian Concannon.

Subs: Mark Fahy, Jack Fitzpatrick, TJ Brennan, Adrian Tuohy, Fintan Burke, David Burke, Johnny Coen, Niall Burke, Evan Niland, Jason Flynn, Kevin Cooney.

So only Eanna ends up being affected. Still unsettling for the team. And with the modern game a lot of effort goes into the restarts so it's not ideal. Surprised with Fintan dropping out but I'm guessing O'Neil is factoring in Waterford playing with 7 defenders and using Harte as the spare man to cover in front of GMac.

Waterford have not once played with 7 defenders under Liam Cahill

Some serious geniuses at County Board forcing out O’Donoghue, second most successful Galway manager of all time. Two embarrassing Championship displays this year.

Shane O’Neill needs a miracle to save his position. When he said pre game Galway got a lot right versus Dublin, I was close to backing Waterford. Fine with not criticising individuals of course in public but suggesting anything well against Dublin is delusional.

Septic performance for 50mins not helped by an absolutely clueless gameplan. Just like the league game we played into waterfords hands with long aimless balls, then when we went short we destroyed them. Today we decided to let them get even further ahead and leave less time on the clock. Its another year wasted on the back of very obvious changes that should have been resolved by the first water break at the latest. A very talented group of hurlers who've left at least 3 All Irelands behind them over the last decade.

MOD was losing these lads anyways in 2019. This slide we're going to continue going down started against Carlow in Feb 2019. The players are just not at the level they were in 2017 and most of 2018. Very few serious counties would keep giving lads like Conor Cooney starting spots when they're out of form for 4 years. Our captain hasn't had a good championship outing since 2018 FFS.

The management are poor but the panel is just not mentally up to it. It's going to be a tough few years.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,475 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Yes, agree, not really up for it, as Waterford were.

That bosthoon Cahill seemed to spend more time on the pitch than some of the players.

You might well be right but it was still foolish to force O'Donoghue out. In his last three years we lost two games in championship. Lost four in the two years since his departure.

You'd have to question was getting rid of Michael Donoghue the right decision now. I thought Galway were in a strong position to drive on from that 2017 all Ireland win, but it seems to me that some of the players are still dining out on that all Ireland win.

Will there be a clear out of players on the panel especially given the recent underage success

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,820 ✭✭✭Doctors room ghost

The best of luck to Joyce and the lads today.

    Up the tribes

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,152 ✭✭✭threeball

That will depend entirely on whether there's a new manager this time next year or not. I think O'Neill has been found wanting tactically. Its been quite obvious how to get the best out of this team yet we keep chopping and changing styles. 2 players who have never produced a single good performance in a Galway jersey given starting berths in a knockout game yesterday and others who have produced left sitting on the bench. I think his time is up but there's not a lot of high quality managers knocking about either.

Eddie Brennan would be a good shout but he's probably sick of sh1te county boards after Laois.

Total rebuild required after yesterday. Only for Waterford were reduced to 14 and had 2 eyes on next weekend we would have been beaten by 10 pts +. More than likely Tipp would have beaten us last year as well only they were reduced to 14.

Management have looked clueless for the 2 years. They have brought us from being Limericks biggest challengers to maybe 6 or 7th best team in the country. We look as slow as a boat

Going forward we need new managment and a lot of pace injected into the team. A lot of positions need filling. Hopefully something along the following lines for next year

    GK. Either of the keepers

Defenders. Daithi B, Fintan B, Morrisey, TJ Brennan, P Mannion, Neary / Fitzpatrick.

Midfield. Big problem here. You need youth and pace. I dont know what can be done....

    Forwards. C Whelan, C Mannion, B Concannon, J Mannion, K Cooney, E Niland

And a blast more of the u20s into the squad to replace the older lads who owes us nothing at this stage.

Cooke really poor so far. Not closing down players or getting in tackles. Two scores direct from his lazy approach

  • Registered Users Posts: 395 ✭✭cal naughton

Comer just does not have a football brain at all. Constantly going for the wrong options and then also trying to hit sky scrapers

    Own Kickouts won:

    2/6 Galway

    3/3 Mayo.

That is 100% on PJ as its one of the only set plays in GAA.

Two new managers next year please... some who understand tactics and gaining the percentages and not just giving them away.
