Isuzu D'Max 1.9 Engine Opinions

Anyone out there have the new model D'Max or even the previous generation with the 1.9 engine.

What's peoples view on its towing ability? Say with a decent load of 2.5 - 3 ton behind. I have seen mixed reviews online.

Have one, pulling 2.5 - 3.5t (or more) every day with it. It's not bad overall. It was better than a Hilux with the 2.4 engine when we were testing both and a hell of a lot more comfortable. Obviously a 3l would be better but not available. It needs to be kept above 2000rpm or it dies pretty quickly on a hill. I have had to go into first gear on some steep climbs with a big load. Other than that its a very stable and comfortable towing vehicle.

Would it pull a triple full of cattle? On the look out for one myself but second hand market is crazy at the minute.

Any thoughts on whether you'd go for the newer 2.8l hilux or dmax again?

I'd go for the 2.8 Hilux I think. The new bigger engine is very impressive and there is no replacement for displacement. But the Dmax is a very good machine. Zero reliability issues so far and it feels tough.

It would definitely pull a triple with cattle but if it's on very hilly roads you will be in first if it gets really steep. It's very stable towing for a pickup and I wouldn't worry about being pushed around with it too much. That said, my only point of reference is a Landcruiser Amazon and everything feels a bit incapable compared to them when it comes to towing. One of the lads working for me is used to a 3.0 Landcruiser and he seems impressed with the Dmax towing ability.

Amazon is a small lorry in disguise. If the dmax is any way satisfactory after that she must be OK.

Would agree with all capra says on a d max as I have a 1.9, fuel economy is good i believe, dash tells me she typically does 36 miles to a gallon tipping round locally, so would be as good & better on steady runs

Most lads I meet driving hiluxs seem to have a need for Speed, so maybe a nice steady,assured d max wouldn't suit them anyway.
