In the High Court in Belfast, Mr Justice Horner ruled that it is plausible that the authorities had a real prospect - which they missed - of preventing the Omagh bombing. He also called for new investigations on both sides of the border.

Why did intelligence services in NI - MI5 and RUC Special Branch - not do everything in their power to prevent the bombing?

Is there a comparison to be drawn with the failure of the FBI and the CIA to co-operate with each other before the September 11th attacks?

When the 2000 edition of Panorama and the criminal and civil proceedings have taken place are taken into account, do we know the names of all of the suspects? In December 2007, the PSNI said that a main suspect from Dundalk had died of cancer but, bizarrely, didn't say what his name is.

I think they should release the bomb warning call......they were moving people away and suddently they herded em towards the bomb

Any person or organisation that puts a bomb anywhere where it can kill people need to be brought to justice.

No person or organisation should get away with planting a bomb.

In my opinion it is only cowards who plant bombs.

Those who planted the bomb carry almost all of the culpability. Nobody forced them to plant the bomb. Those good republicans need to be brought to justice.

I don't think anybody is denying that. However if there was fore knowledge of that event and it was allowed to go ahead that is also worth investigating to see what could have been done there.

The bombers should most definitely be brought to justice but also so should the security services if it is found that they were negligent in keeping the public safe because they failed to act.

The theory of the authorities letting the bombing take place was addressed in an edition of the Channel 5 documentary series 'Conspiracy', which has also been broadcast on Sky History (formerly the History Channel). Michael Gallagher was interviewed for that edition, as was military historian Dr Lynnette Nusbacher, who argued against the theory on the grounds that the authorities would've been "too scared of being found out".

It doesn't take a genius to work out why warnings weren't heeded, a high bodycount is always useful to the British to demonise their opponents. They knew it was going to happen, shades of 9/11 here.

It was already obvious that Republican paramilitaries in NI (whether or not they supported the Good Friday Agreement) are terrorists. So would the British need to demonise them? The dissident republican groups that already existed at the time - the Real IRA and the Continuity IRA - already had low levels of support.
