About 3 months ago, I bought a Planex 1TB NAS for storage on my home network. It was horrible, taking an age to setup, not playing nice with OSX or the PS3, and the connection would continuously drop. I returned it after about 3 weeks of hassle.

In comes the 1TB Time Capsule. Amusingly, it costs a fraction less than the Planex NAS, and it comes with the added bonus of being a 802.11n wifi router, a print server and it's gauranteed to play nice with my MacBook, features Time Machine backup and will even work with Windows.

Looking forward to getting my hands on it, and hoping that someone will get some DLNA features onto it too!

I'm building a house at the moment and I wanted a way to host my 4 external USB WD Mybook drives without big costs and without having a PC switched on all the time.

I was looking at the airport extreme as it can host USB hd's and printers with the use of a USB hub, now that the Time Cap has come out it suits me even more as it provides me more space without more cables and it still fits my needs :)

NekkidBibleMan, you will likely have issues using any drives on the time cap with a PS3 or X-Box as even to view and connect to these drives in Windows requires Bonjour for windows to be installed,

It works with windows? As in, it shows up as an external drive or what exactly?

    You've piqued my curiosity :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,827 ✭✭✭unklerosco

I'm assuming the drive is formatted for mac?? Doesn't that mean windows can't use it?? I'm assuming u'd have to partition it n have a mac n windows partition??

It shows up as a shared network drive in windows,

You can configure the permissions via the airport util to either allow read/right or read only access. you install Bonjour for windows on the windows machine to allow it to see the drive.

This is all on the apple site :)

You can also connect a USB hub to the time cap/airport extreme and connect a number of usb drives and a printer if you want,

As its a network drive it doesn't matter if its mac formatted because..well its being shared over a network, same as a linux formatted drive can be viewed on windows and a NTFS network drive can be written to over a network on a mac.

Yes it will, however you will need to change the power adaptor...if its anything like the macbook AC adapter that should be easy however if its not you might have to buy a new one from the Apple UK/Ireland on-line store.

Was in UCC yesterday and saw someone had modded a brand new MacBook by replacing the glowing white apple with the old coloured retro logged. Looked savage I have to say.

This is something I've been researching recently. The PS3 uses uPNP A/V & DLNA to find media on a local network. I'm trying to get this to work with SME Server at the moment and failing that I'll have to use FreeNAS or uShare which support these schemes. I don't see any mention of these in the spec for the Time Capsule - anyone know differently ?

I can get the single colour as it looks kinda nice, but I wouldn't go for the retro apple logo...never liked it tbh :)

of course if your going to go retro...why not go REALLY Retro and use there first logo :)

personally i would never buy this or any backup sytem
i see no need - mac never crashed - in fact my xp only crashed once - nothing was lost
if i had something really important that i could never take a risk in losing i have 3 usb keys - a pc that is not connected to the net - so will unlikely to crash and a huge ipod to use as a disk

hmm lets see, over the years of having a server on 24/7 365 for almost 6 years solid I've lost 3 60GB IBM Deskstars (aka Deathstars) and two Seagate 120GB's.

I can tell you anybody that says there's no need to backup is a fool in my view, at the very least everyone should backup there photos & music, at the end of the day what happens if you take digital photos of all your family events and then your drive dies and you haven't used your ipod or usb sticks to back them up? :)

by the way a computer doesn;'t need to be connected to the net for a hard drive to fail..shock horror :D

I currently have about 60GB music and about 100GB in digital photos (most of it shot in RAW) as well as 100GB's of video, while the video isn't too important to me I backup both my music and photos to an external drive once a month and plan on backing them up to a 2nd drive just in case something happens to my main backup drive,

There are two types of computer user in the world:

    1. Those whose hard disks have failed.
    2. Those whose hard disks have not failed yet.

if it works for you, great!! Just don't get caught out.

I keep a full backup off-site (refreshed every quarter), I also backup the more important and frequently updated stuff to both an external HD and my hosting server.

A bit much, i know, but i've had HDs fail on me (Western Digital primarily) and am not gonna let it happen again that i've lost data.

Time Capsule doesnt seem to support DLNA. It should mount as a NAS drive in finder though, so if you a run a DLNA server on your mac (TwonkyMedia et al) you should be able to stream to your PS3.

    I think.

i spose - if i had money i might buy it

essays/notes - take seconds to backup with usb and on another comp
music/photos - not updated that often - so its one big transfer and a few small ones

the best prog i've found get media from my Mac to PS3 is medialink from nullriver.

Ok, its $20, but its far better than twonky and its not a rip-off like eyeConnect.

lol - i hope that wont happen

anywhoo - i would have my usb and or ipod in my clothes and would gmail-hotmail and/or dublin.ie email all burn at the same time ?

Thats great, now do you actually make a habit of making these backups or are you just saying? :)

I personally wouldn't backup anything really important to the likes of a free e-mail account, god knows if somebody ever got access to it in the future.

So your in bed and your house goes on fire and you have to escape, your telling me your going to grab your ipod and usb sticks on the way out?

Your backup plans are looking less and less dependable,

Best way of backing up is:
    - two drives
    - Keep one in fire proof safe in your home
    - another off-site

Its extreme but the ONLY way to be 100% sure :)

I just gota get my time cap and safe and I'm in business....

if i had business account details
or other peoples important material - i would of course back up more strictly
    yes - i have a backup of my music - and notes/essays

but im certain none of my comps will crash - hasnt happened in 10 years - could still happen but i wont cont on it

im just saying i would buy a lot of other things before this = cheaper alternatves

without looking at any detailed info on the time capsule, does it use any kind of redundant system? It's all fine and well backing up to this thing, but if it only uses a single drive without any kind of RAID or other fault tolerance, it's not really a very viable option for secure backups.

Grand it's cheap really for what it is but that'll be little consolation if it dies and takes 1TB of your data with it.

i was thinking that myself, but judging by the size of it, i'm assuming it's just the one drive in there.

anyone know if you can change the drives in it? wouldn't buy one if you couldn't stick a new drive in there 2-3 years down the line.

I was going to ask that question. Well i know you can add a hard drive to it, but could you add a 2nd drive on top of that ????

Main question when the hard drive is full what do you do ???? Do you just leave it alone and still use the airport part of it.

What kind of hard disk is in Time Capsule I wonder. TC doesn't look any bigger than an airport extreme basestation so you would think 2.5" but 2.5" disks don't come as 1Tb, and they aren't server class anyway

It says that time capsule works with works with certified 802.11n draft 2.0 products. And it’s compatible with Macs and PCs that use 802.11a, b or g technologies

My computer says IEEE 802.11 --- no letter after it. So i guess time capsule is no good for my imac. My new macbook has an 802.11n.

If my imac cant work with it i will get the smaller time capsule.

Macworld magazine hookup, did a bit of freelance work for them during my final year in college as an Apple rep:) I've been looking at this for ages also, afaik it's upgradable to 8TB today which is insane.

very nice...i'm exceptionally jealous....thats one serious piece of kit!!

just bought this today to solve some storage needs.

Pity its not Firewire, but hell i can't argue with 1TB!

I'm using 4 250GB externals at the mo' for storage, all scattered wildly across my desk. I haven't even pretended to make it look like I'm organised:rolleyes:
