    Respect (Sock It To Me)
    07/17/2008 by Scott Hudson spacer.gif

Do any wrestlers in the WWE, TNA, ROH or anywhere actually have respect for the business anymore? Tuesday night’s major league baseball all-star game brought a tear to the eye when, for the last time in hallowed Yankee Stadium, just about every living baseball legend (except Pete Rose) hit the field to be honored by this year’s cream of the diamond crop. Interviews with the 2008 All-Stars showed a reverence that bordered on worship for the legends.

Would wrestlers do the same thing? No way in hell.

When Ric Flair retired on the March 31 “Raw,” he was feted by a host of legends (Steamboat, Arn, Valentine, etc.) and a couple of current superstars (who could forget the humiliatingly self-serving bear-hug lift administered by Dave Batista. Ridiculous.) Admittedly, HHH and John Cena (why was he out there?) seemed sufficiently impressed to be a part of the festivities but when the locker room emptied and a host of WWE talent applauded long and loud for the Nature Boy, most looked like they were just following a script.

Oh, I can hear the vitriol now! “You do not know what you’re talking about! That was respect being shown for one of the all-time greats by a group of wrestlers who owe their careers to the path he blazed!”

Right. Keep telling yourselves that. Maybe the Easter Bunny will believe you.

The truth, whether these gassed up freaks will admit it or not, is that Ric Flair was just the old guy who Vince kept pushing even though he worked the same match every night. (That could not be further from what I believe, by the way.) Most of those guys didn’t know Ric Flair from Rick Roll.

And that’s the problem. There is no need for them to know or appreciate how their several hundred thousand dollar annual income is owed, in no small part, to Ric Flair and every other guy that worked in the 70's and 80's. Or even the 50's and 60's and before. While baseball players far and wide can tell you exactly why the name Curt Flood is spoken with quiet awe, wrestlers probably walked up to Deuce and said, “Your dad’s a big guy. He should have been a wrestler too.”

Why is that exactly? Because the WWF shut down territories, bought up contracts, secured footage rights and gripped all three tighter than Hulk Hogan gripped Brooke’s butt poolside. Vince McMahon won, of that there can be no question. In war, the winners get to write the history. The revision of wrestling history (or the complete lack of non-WWE history therein) is just one of many spoils earned by the WWE. Thus, when there are legends conventions, guess who do not show up? All legends currently subject to WWE contracts. When DVD box sets are released, which career sections are utterly buried if included at all? The non-WWE parts. On the Legends of Wrestling on “WWE24/7,” does any wrestling promotion other than the WWE (and the UWF if Jim Ross is hosting) ever get put over? Are you kidding?!

To the victors go the spoils. And this thing is spoiling pretty quickly. Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it. That’s doesn’t mean Jimmy Garvin and Sunshine are going to wash Kevin Von Erich’s horse again. But it does mean that the fate that befell WCW, the NWA, the AWA, Florida, Georgia, the UWF (the good one), Portland, World Class and Central States may creep up on the WWE unless they take a step back and remember this: Just because they are the only game in town now, doesn’t mean they always were or they always will be. Before you bring up the USFL, remember that without that league the NFL would not have instant replay, the 2-point conversion and the stopping of the clock after a first down. The NFL shut down the USFL, but they did not in any way forget them or bury their memory.

Baseball paid tribute to its rich heritage Tuesday night by honoring the men who helped build the sport. Why do I get the feeling Wrestlemania 25 will feature a blow-out tribute marking the 5th anniversary of the diva search featuring a reunion of Tough Enough: The First Season. Gene Kiniski must be spinning in his grave. Wait, what?

I found that article quite interesting, he seems bitter about something to do with it. Maybe Ric ignored him once or something!

Glad you posted the article and not a link, at least that way the site doesn't get more traffic for the spouting's of an idiot.

This is probably slightly off topic... but why don't people like the Wrestlezone website. Is it the pop ups and advertising?

Hate to be a nOOB and all. Its the one I look at when I am checking stuff out. And while I do feel all the 'celebrity columnist' are awful, i generally just find it easy to navigate around and get whatever info is there to be gotten.

I'm not looking for an argument or to be judged, more for enlightenment :p

None I get my news from the directly from where these spoiler sites get it from.

Long story short, they copy their news from elsewhere, turning one sentence of news into three paragraphs and vice versa, they often make stuff up just to get more people to visit their websites and then there's the spyware too. People in the spyware protection business actually use wrestling news sites to test out their software a lot of the time because they're usually the first sites to have the newest spyware, as well as having so much of it

I read my reports and news on wrestlezone and never got any viruses off them?

I find it an easier site to use than some of those other clammy websites which are a lot more all over the place.
But that just me, :P Im simple!

How can you have an opinion if you havent read it? The Observer is the industry paper and 95% of all news on the internet comes from it.

OMG, I am so sorry for tarnishing the great name of the OBSERVER!

If 95% of all the news comes from it, and its the SAME NEWS, then why should i read two sites, i read it off wrestlezone, i've gotten used to it. Hell, i've even Bookmarked it! :pac:

So just stop marking out for the observer now, ok. Do us both a favour.

I have respect for what it is and how knowledgeable it is and all that, but i personally have nothing against it, i'm just used to reading my news from other sources.

When said sources are rewritten, taken out of context stories from the Observer? It aint the same news the spoiler sites really add anything to it. You cant really comment on this fact but I can as Ive read both in the past. If you get the Observer you dont need to go to so many sites as it is all in it much better written and about a week earlier.

As has been said already, the other news sites misrepresent what's written in the Observer and never give the full news either. Plus Meltzer's written some damn good articles in his time

Your "mate" is wrong as it is completely untrue. As spoiler sites space out news from it over a 7+day span.

Haha, I just had to post this as it's on the subject of the non-credibility of these news sites. The daily update on f4wonline.com was posted not long ago and one of the updates was
-- The Kaz retirement from TNA is an angle.

A while after that wrestlingunlimited.com have a news piece saying
I talked with two people from TNA today and I can now confirm that the Kaz retirement/quitting from TNA story is an angle. He is not gone from the company. This is the type of stuff Vince Russo likes to do by working the 'internet', or trying to.

As if these idiots have sources in TNA! Don't believe all that you read there

No, but it's not exactly expensive either, it was less than a fiver a month when I signed up. And you get way more than just a newsletter a week. It's nice to know that if you want the news that you've got it all as soon as it's available and it's in the correct context

not bad, it's cheaper than the 36 euro i used to spend on wow every 3 months :D

You'll probably see that Powerslam takes a lot of there editoral from The Wrestling Observer while Fighting Spirit takes ALOT the Figure 4Weekly. You honestly wont need to buy mags again.

I'd say it's one of those things that once you get you will never pull out of but they should offer a sample of what you get for your buck on the website. The free one they gave out when they linked the two companies was terrible compared to some of the good ones that Vince linked us to here earlier

    In English? Specfics?

They do offer a sample: the audio shows

Are the audio shows free? Any chance of a link there then?

The example I was talking about was the podcast/show after the figure 4 merger. It was really bad and I thought that that was the only legitimitely free one

There's a free show at least once a week, there'll be one up by tomorrow morning

I think there was a free edition of the Observer given out by the British distributors of it last Christmas. Don't know if I still have it

Youve never heard a Bryan & Vinny show

The first show after the merger wasnt great but they had a lot of information to rely about the merger. Bryan usually only spends a minute tops schilling the website on free shows. The merger was seriously MAJOR news for a lot of people, membership to the site doubled instantly.

There is a free show posted every Tuesday morning.

I've heard about 3 or 4 and I had been impressed but from what I've heard here the merger has made things kind of chaotic ATM so it's probably not a great time to join. Also seems like a bit of an overkill in terms of how much info you get

That is overblown, the only thing that was chaotic and I was a part of was that Bryan introduced a moderated message board so the board members revolted.

Weird reason not to sign up, I just pick and choose. I dont think anyone listens and reads everything. It caters for everyone.

None that I know of. People would probably abuse it once they get to know each other on the board anyway!

No, there was in the very early days but Bryan is a bit cheap.

I dont know what you are into but you must, must listen to the Figure Four Daily with Bryan Danielson:

    http://www.f4wonline.com/content/view/3624/105/

One of my favourite interviews ever, Danielson rarely gives interviews but this one is amazingly great. Anything else just ask here or PM me.

It's the FREE Bryan and Vinny Show and it's HUGE this week. We've got three major WWE shows to talk about, including WWE Smackdown, the Great American Bash, and Raw! We'll discuss the wedding reception, the greatness of Edge, a lackluster PPV, a very different HBK vs. Jericho match, a pretty good Raw until a bad finish, where they may be headed, and more! Best of all it's FREE, so please post the link or file elsewhere and help spread the word about figurefouronline.com!

    http://media002.f4wonline.com/free/072308bvshow.mp3

It was delayed a day because Bryan was in Vegas this weekend covering MMA.

There has been far better Bryan & Vinnys and the board aint what it used to be ever since they added the moderated section.

Listen to the previous Bryan & Vinny to hear Bryan going crazy over last week's rotten IMPACT.
