    Why do you wanna join?
What do your family think about it?
How much of a secret do you keep it from friends/neighbours/family?
How many times have you applied?
Would you consider a different police force?

    I'll start the ball rolling...

I wanted to join coz I have since I was 2ft tall, just thought it sounds like a great job. My dad did 30 years service and despite all the ****e, he says he wouldn't have done anything different if he could go back.
    + the money sounds great!
+ it sounds so much more interesting than most other things
    + I like getting outside

My mum hated the idea of me joining and took a long time to come round (cause of living on the edge with my dad most probably)
The rest of my family are fine with it (especially my dad)

I don't know any of my neighbours so i don't tell them, all my close friends know about it, and all my family

This is my first time applying and I don't really wanna move away for a job

This is my second time applying, Just always wanted to do this job but started thinking seriously about it when I was 15/16.

I have a small family but they all know, and good friends know I have joined. Its never been problem with my family they have always thought it was a good thing to get involved in and never discouraged me at all.

To me its the job, its exciting, not your usual 9-5, which would bore me to tears.

The money is good and there is lots of different areas to move into once you are in.

And the pension scheme is good, most jobs dont compare to the psni pension.

another reason for me as well is that I will be able to find time to go to the gym during days off etc and not just have to go after 7pm like most 9-5 workers do, when you are exhausted from lifting things all day.

    Good topic Inspector.

    Why do you wanna join?
I've served 11 years in the RAF and need to settle down. I've worked at 5 bases in England, Scotland and NI in those 11 years, plus overseas tours of the middle east and the Falklands. But I still want a challenging job with good prospects. The police is like the forces without the bullsh*t of being sent away all the time. Plus I can transfer my pension across.
What do your family think about it?
They're all really proud. My wife's side of the family are from a background where nobody reallly joined the police in the past, but they are all really pleased for me.
How much of a secret do you keep it from friends/neighbours/family?
One of my next door neighbours knows, but then he knew about me being in the forces. Plus his brother in-law is still serving.
How many times have you applied?
    First time applying.
Would you consider a different police force?
No, my house and family is here and I think being part of the PSNI is always a historic journey; as times change here so much it's great to be part of that.

i know what you mean by historic journey, i also lke the idea of being a part of that

    Why do you wanna join?
Always did - and for lots of reasons, not least of which is the variety and the prospects of the job, and to put the baddies behind bars where they belong!

What do your family think about it?
Everyone supports me a million percent

How much of a secret do you keep it from friends/neighbours/family?
Close friends and my current work collegaues know but thats it.

How many times have you applied?
This is the first time, probably the first of many but I'm not quitting til I'm in there!

Would you consider a different police force?
Initially I thought yes but my hearts in Norn Iron and the PSNI is the best police service in the world ( IMHO ), I'd be proud as punch to wear the uniform.

    Good thread!
    And there you have it!:D

    Why do you wanna join?
I wanted a job that keeps you on your toes and challenges you in more ways than one. To be honest the office jobs 9-5 is just not for me, sitting bored to tears behind a computer all day long! I'd far rather be out there making the place safer for others. Other than that, it's a great career, for life.

What do your family think about it?
Supported me all the way, even though i didn't think i was getting in this time!

How much of a secret do you keep it from friends/neighbours/family?
Well most friends know about it and some work colleagues but i wouldn't want everyone to know, some things have to be kept secret.

How many times have you applied?
    It's my first time applying.

Would you consider a different police force?
I was considering quite recently moving over to Scotland to try the police force there, only if i didn't get into the PSNI.

    Why do you wanna join?
My father was in the fire service for thirty 30years, serving in belfast during the hight of the troubles. so ive always grown up with the emergency services. but i always wanted to be in the police rather than the fire service

What do your family think about it?
im 22 and have bounced about from pointless jobs since i was 16 so they are extremely proud that i have finally got my chosen career.

How much of a secret do you keep it from friends/neighbours/family?
My family, my girlfriends family and a few of my dads fire service friends

How many times have you applied?
    1st time

Would you consider a different police force?
tried for the garda a few years ago but it was a half arsed attempt.

    Why do you wanna join?
Need another exciting job, left the raf regiment due to not wanting to be away for 7 months at a time. As JVB says it's like the forces without the bull ****. Need a good career with prospects and challenges, your everyday civilian job is underpaid and boring!

What do your family think about it?
Glad that i'm not taking incoming in Iraq anymore, so no other job is gonna bother them!

How much of a secret do you keep it from friends/neighbours/family?
Friends and family know, work collegues don't.

How many times have you applied?
    First time and the last!

Would you consider a different police force?
The police is just one big force! Didn't attend my fitness test for a mainland force as I was concentrating on PSNI. Now I know what the process is like I wish i'd carried on with the other. Now applying for other mainland forces.

    Why do you wanna join?
When i was 18, i saw my boyfriend at the time Apply, Succeed, Join & Enjoy his 1st probationary year. It sounded class! I think it was going to his SRN & hearing about his first Blue Light Run that clinched it for me.

I also have a desire to lock paedofiles, rapists & drug dealers away!

What do your family think about it?
Mum & Dad think it fantastic idea.... Brothers not keen on little sis doing dangerous job & Sister...lets not go there!

How much of a secret do you keep it from friends/neighbours/family?
My family & a few friends know.

How many times have you applied?
    This is my 3rd.

Would you consider a different police force?
I don't really want to as N.Ire is my home... but I can't sit about for years doing rubbish office jobs praying i'll get in the PSNI!

If i do succeed in applying for another police force I'll look on it as a stepping stone towards the PSNI (sneak in the back door when the 50:50 selection is over! ;))

    Why do you wanna join?
i've always wanted to join the police, never wanted to do anything else. I want a job where every day is something different, excitement, challenges, excellent prospects for specialisation and/or promotion. the money is great and its a career for life.

What do your family think about it?
my mum is the typical mother, a worrier. my dad is all for it, he and my uncle wanted to join the police when they were younger but felt they couldn't given their community background during the troubles.

How much of a secret do you keep it from friends/neighbours/family?
my friends, a couple of neighbours and my extended family know i'm trying to get in, and know that its what i want to do but i dont really give too much away in terms of how far along in the process i am, same with my immediate family, i havent even told them i got a medical date yet! lol

How many times have you applied?
this is hopefully third time lucky, failed A/C first time, but it was sort of a half assed attempt as i was still at uni, failed medical last time

Would you consider a different police force?
I have considered strathclyde and the met as imo they are two top notch police forces, but really they are just ideas, PSNI is where i've always wanted to join

    Why do you wanna join?
This may sound lame, but I want to be doing something that I can feel proud of. A 9-5 office job just doesn't do that for me.

I don't want to be getting up in the morning and thinking 'here we go again'! I'd much prefer 'what's today got in store for me?'

What do your family think about it?
My wife wasn't too sure at first (she's scared for my safety, bless her), but once I mentioned the uniform and handcuffs, she was all for it. :D
The only negatives are from a safety perspective. They all know it's what I want to do, so they're right behind me.

How much of a secret do you keep it from friends/neighbours/family
Only close friends and immediate family. A couple of people from work who are applying themselves! None of my neighbours know.

How many times have you applied?
    Third time lucky? (C12, C13 & C14....... C15, C16, C17....... whatever it takes).

Would you consider a different police force?
Maybe if I wasn't such a home bird and didn't have a young family to take care of. I'm just gonna pester the PSNI until they relent and let me in. :p

I'd join the Gardai if they weren't such scum and the pay wasn't so ****! I might take at look at interpol someday too

    Why do you wanna join?
I have wanted to join since i was a little boy. I know it sounds kinda lame but i want a good career, with great prospects and affords me the chance to make a difference. I'm sick of people who say "society is going to the dogs" yet do nothing about it!!!

What do your family think about it?
They are hugely supportive, at first they were a little apprehensive since i am the first person in my family/extended family to join any sort of armed force but they were over the moon when i got the call!!!

How much of a secret do you keep it from friends/neighbours/family
I pretty much keep it to myself, other than my immediate family and VERY close friends. I believe this country has progressed hugely in terms of Police relations but i don't think we are out of the woods just yet!!

How many times have you applied?
This was my second application. I failed the first on A/C. Despite the fact i got in this time i would have continued applying until recruitment branch relented!!!

Would you consider a different police force?
I looked into other UK forces as i have friends who were unsuccessful in PSNI recruitment and got in first time with Strathclyde in Scotland. I have had aspirations to join the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police). I have been in touch with them and much of my family is originally from Canada, but by all accounts the PSNI is the best trained force worldwide and the reputation of professionalism preceeds it. I think i'll stick here!!!!

    Great Thread!!!!

    Why do you wanna join?
Always wanted to be a police officer. Got offered a job in 2001 but had to decline it due to family pressures. Wish now i had of just done it!! Think the hole 50:50 is making it better, but it should mean 50% catholic and not anyone from the rest of the world who thinks they are.

What do your family think about it?
The only 2 people who know about it are my dad and my wife. Because of my family backround i can't tell anyone yet (which is sad). My wife has been very supportive!

How much of a secret do you keep it from friends/neighbours/family
Have'nt told anyone but my wife and dad. Still a small threat there in day to day policing unfortunately, but some day if i get in i hope to sing it from the roof tops!!!!!!

How many times have you applied?
3 times. Got selected in 2001 but turned it down for my own safety.

Would you consider a different police force?
    Maybe the Gards!!!

Why do I want to join up

Have wanted to join since i was about 5, mum and dad were both in RAF, dad then had a career here in security background, we went through security scares etc but is has not put me off, only made my will stronger! I have previously worked as a civvy for Strathclyde Police at their HQ, absolutely loved it. Also the money is a great incentive, am currently working a 55/60 hr week between f/t and p/t jobs to earn a decent crust, champagne lifestyle with beer income and all that! Of course there's the variety in work, no 9-5, am I abnormal in prefering shiftwork? the craic, the nights out, oh, and the career prospects!!!!

    My family's thoughts

Hubby well up for me gettin in, he can be a kept man when i get Hugh Orde's job LOL! Dad not so keen at first, but coming round as he can see that it's what i want to do. Am sure my mum would have behind me, she wanted to join up when we lived in Glasgow, but life took over and put paid to that pipe dream for her.

    Who have I told?

My family and the in-laws know, a few close friends, most of workmates know as they never stop hearing about how much i hate the job am in! Wouldn't tell the neighbours as am not that chatty with them.... hubby's workmates all know as well, all rooting for me!

How many times have I applied?

This is my 3rd attempt, last time was 2002, when i got to medical, failed the eyetest, now my vision is 20/20, so hope the rest of me is healthy! 3rd time lucky Ihope.

Would I consider a move elsewhere?

If i wasn't married and didn't have a mortgage maybe i would yep, but my husband has a good secure job, well as secure as secure is, so i couldn't ask him to change everything on account of me..... one good thing about the PSNI recruitment process is that there is no limit on how many times you can apply, in mainland forces it's 3 times maximum I think.... i know someone who has tried 8 times and everytime he hasn't got through with his merit score, i think he has given up now though.

May aswell fill this in - so that I can laugh at it when I'm still applying 10 years later.

Why do I want to join up?

It's a brilliant career. Interesting day-to-day job. You have reason to keep in shape and be fit and healthy - no slacking. The money is good. It's a productive job. You get to see the benefits of what you are doing there and then - whether you are helping the public or preventing a crime. The job satisfaction would be incredible. You can go to sleep each night - knowing you're making some sort of a difference.

    My family's thoughts.

My meh is happy that I've finally found something I want to do.

    Who have I told?

Ah told ma meh an' deh - but ah think ma deh's fergattan about it.

How many times have I applied?

This is my first time applying - But I'll apply as many times as it takes.

Would I consider a move elsewhere?

Yes. I've no ties here. No wife. (I've a girlfriend but the way things are going - I probably won't soon - she's doin my head in. She's got all demanding ever since we had sex. Phoning me all the time, wanting to know where I am when I'm out with friends, constantly nagging about me drinking too much at the weekends. I just wish she would chill out.. you know? Like.. I don't want to shout at her or raise my voice 'cause there's really no harm in her.. but seriously, I swear - If she pisses me off one more ****ing time, I swear - She's going to find all her **** outside the door in a box.) Anyway.. as I was saying - No kids. (THAT I KNOW OF) HO HO!

That's the best way - blame it on them - you're right.

The best way to go about it is to apply a campaign of passive aggression until they dump you.

    For example :

    Step 1

"Oh fiddle-sticks! - I've just stood on you new GHD hair straighteners - they're broke now - You shouldn't have just left them lying around at your arse."

(When I say "stood on" - I really mean thrashed off the wall a couple of times - they're hard to break just by standing on them - If you want to be subtle - use a hammer on them out the back when she's not at home.)

    Step 2.

Never.. and I mean, NEVER - pay her compliments - but go out of your way to pay all her friends compliments - even her male friends. This will make her think she's not sexually appealing to you anymore. If you can, try to throw in a few insults that will play on her mind a bit.. you know that ones - "Are you SURE you should be eating that?"

    Step 3.

Repeat Steps 1 & 2 but make up different senarios until she eventually dumps you.

    Problem solved.

(For extra finess - try to cry when she dumps you, because then she'll tell her friends and they'll feel sorry for you - you might therefore get lucky with one of them. It also helps because you've already been paying her friends compliments so they're already primed for the taking.)

    Is this your bible zzoop?

THE GENTLEMANS CODE TO FOLLOW AT ALL TIMES!
Tips On How To Treat A Lady

    1. When she asks how she looks shrug and say “could be better.” This will keep her on her toes…girls love that.

    2. Never hold her hand. This can be interpreted as a sign of weakness. (or if she grabs your hand squeeze hers really really hard until she cries. This will impress her by showing her what a strong man you are.)

    3. Once a month sneak up on her from behind and roundhouse kick her in the back of the head. Girls are like dogs. They love to be roughed up.

    4. Call her in the middle of the night to ask if she’s sleeping. If she says she is, say, “You better be!” Hang up. Repeat this 4 or 5 times until morning. This will show her you care.

    5. When she is upset about something, suggest to her that it might be her fault. This will pave the way for her own personal improvement. Every girl needs some improvement.

    6. Recognize the small things . . . they usually mean the most. Then when she’s sleeping, steal all her small things and break them. Jewelry is for pussies and asian ladies.

    7. If you’re talking to another girl, make sure shes looking. When she is, stare into her eyes mouth the words “love you” and grab the other girls ass. Girls love competition.

    8. Tell her you’re taking her out to dinner. Drive for miles so she thinks it’s going to be really special. Then take her to a burning tire yard. When she starts to get upset tell her you were just kidding and now you’re really going to take her to dinner. Then drive her home. When she starts crying and asks why you would do something like that lean over and whisper very quietly into her ear “…because i can.”

    9. Introduce her to your friends as “some chick”. Women love those special nicknames.

    10. Play with her hair. Play with it HARD.

    11. Warm her up when shes cold…and not by giving her your jacket…then you might get cold. Rather, look her in the eye and say “if you don’t stop bitching about the cold right now you’re going to be bitching about a black eye.” The best way to get warm is with fear.

    12. Take her to a party. When you get there she’ll have to go to the bathroom (they always do). Leave immediately. Come back right when the partys dying and yell at her the whole way home for ditching you at the party.

    13. Make her laugh. A good way to do this is if she has a small pet. Kick the pet. I always find stuff like that funny. why shouldn’t girls?

    14. Let her fall asleep in your arms. When she’s fast asleep, wait 10 minutes then JUMP UP AND SCREAM IN HER EAR! Repeat until she goes home. Now you can use your arms for more important things, like basketball.

    15. Spit often. I hear girls like guys that spit.

    16. If you care about her never ever tell her. This will only give her self confidence. Then you can never turn her into the object she deep down desires to be.

    17. Every time youre in her house steal one of the following: shoes, earrings, or anything else that comes in pairs. Only take one of the pair. This way she’ll go crazy.

    18. Take her out to dinner. Right when she’s about to order interrupt and say no shes not hungry. Make her watch you eat. Girls love a guy that speaks for her.

    19. Look her in the eyes and smile. Then roundhouse kick her. Girls love a spontaneous guy.

    20. Give her one of your t-shirts……and make sure it has your smell on it. But not a sexy cologne smell. A bad smell. You know what i’m talking about.

    21. When its raining keep asking her if she’s crying. She’ll say no its just the rain. Ten minutes later turn to her and just scream at her to stop crying you [snip]ing baby. Girls like a tough man as i’ve already stated.

    22. Titty twisters and plenty of them.

    23. If you’re listening to music, and she asks to hear it, tell her no. She’ll think you’re mysterious.

    24. Remember her birthday but don’t get her something.

    Why do you wanna join?
I get excited even thinking about the job. No two days are the same, you never know what is around the cornor, you learn so many new skills, you get to make a difference (cheesy i know but its true) etc etc

What do your family think about it?
Family and girlfriend could not be more supportive.

How much of a secret do you keep it from friends/neighbours/family
I've told my family, girlfriend/ her family and 1 or 2 close friends. No need to tell anyone else.

How many times have you applied?
Im hoping this is fourth time lucky.

Would you consider a different police force?
No. I have a house and girlfriend here so moving is not an option. If i was ten years younger i would think about joining a force across the water.

Ha ha - Yes - this IS gospel. This point is especially important!
I remember reading this maybe a year or two ago. Very funny indeed. Lol.

I think it's always best to send a thoughtful text with the immortal words of Bart Simpson 'welcome to dumpsville, population YOU!'

    Why do you wanna join?
Number of reasons - i'd be lying if i said the money had nothing to do with it, the pension too. But also my granddad was in the RIC then RUC until he died and i've always loved hearing about him. Plus a few friends have now joined so that helped put the idea in my head. And finally i suppose the old cliche of wanting to do a job that actually (hopefully) benefits the community instead of a job i dont like making money for somebody else :)

What do your family think about it?
A mixture of extremely proud and quite worried too. My wife is worried the most i think but also very happy because she knows how much i've wanted this. My mum is just annoyed she cant tell everybody how proud she is now that im following in her dad's footsteps :)

How much of a secret do you keep it from friends/neighbours/family?
I've only told a few close friends and some family. My mum and dad know, my wife obviously, her mum and dad and two sisters and their husbands since i needed vetting info from them. Haven't told my own brother or sister since we're not really that close and no other family members know. Haven't told any workmates or neighbours. The way i look at it is the people who need to know do and those who don't cant say anything :)

How many times have you applied?
5 but have finally got through on the 4th (vetting took forever so applied again). Missed the 3rd because of a car accident meaning really bad traffic on the way to the assessment centre.

Would you consider a different police force?
No probably not. Not at this stage anyway. Too much family and commitments here.

    8. Tell her you’re taking her out to dinner. Drive for miles so she thinks it’s going to be really special. Then take her to a burning tire yard. When she starts to get upset tell her you were just kidding and now you’re really going to take her to dinner. Then drive her home. When she starts crying and asks why you would do something like that lean over and whisper very quietly into her ear “…because i can.”.

This one made me laugh out loud! It's pure evil! lol!

    I'll join in too...

    Why do you wanna join?
I've a few relatives/friends in the police and they have always said i should apply, my mum talked me out of applying before as my uncle was one of the RUC officers killed in the Newry bomb. But she thinks it's relatively safe now. I love action and i thrive on chaos, so i figured this was the job for me!

What do your family think about it?
They are delighted and very proud I am following in so many footsteps. They are also worried for the safety of the public if i get into Mobile Response.....

How much of a secret do you keep it from friends/neighbours/family
Most people know. Friends, family and workmates. When i got my medical date I wasn't able to keep it to myself!

How many times have you applied?
This is my first time and i can't believe i've managed to get this far!

Would you consider a different police force?
I might. I don't really have ties here, so you never know! Wouldn't fancy London though.... I wonder if i could get a police job on a sleepy caribbean island??
