Just heard on the radio that Charlie Mulgrew and Declan Bonner will be ratified at a county board meeting this week. If this is true, then I'm happy and getting more optimistic about next year.

Mulgrew and Bonner to take over in Donegal
    16 October 2008

    By Cóilín Duffy

Former Fermanagh manager Charlie Mulgrew and All-Ireland winning captain Declan Bonner are set to be appointed as the new Donegal Football management at the next meeting of the county board.

Mulgrew and Bonner were interviewed for the position on Tuesday night, and although they initially had decided to apply separately, they launched a joint bid and have now succeeded in their quest; with the new management team to be ratified next week by Donegal clubs.

Interviews concluded last night with Mulgrew and Bonner the preferred candidates, beating off 1992 All-Ireland winner John Joe Doherty; Jim McGuinness, Francie Martin and former St. Eunan’s and Glenfin manager Mickey Houston.

It’s second time lucky for Mulgrew, who was interviewed for the position last year only to be denied the post, following the appointment of Brian McIver.

Mulgrew took charge of the Erne County for four years, and he helped them reach the All-Ireland semi-final in 2004, following victories over Meath, Cork and Donegal via the qualifier route.

43-year old Na Rossa clubman Bonner is back on familiar territory, and was Donegal manager from 1998 to 2000, guiding his side to an Ulster final in his first year, only to lose out to Derry by two points in the Clones encounter.

Sean Clearkin will join Mulgrew and Bonner as a selector, while Conal Sheridan from Omagh, who was involved as a trainer during Mulgrew’s tenure in Fermanagh is set to assume that role in the new setup.

The duo’s appointment is the second joint management team to succeed in apply for an inter-county role ahead of next year’s campaign; following on from the appointment of Mickey Moran and John Morrison as the Leitrim Senior Football management.

We were talking about this last night on our 3 hour journey to Croker yesterday and it sounds a dream team BUT from what I heard yesterday this will never be a happy camp with these 2 in charge, ( had 2 Dungloe men, Eunans man and myself in car)

Word is that JJ Doherty was offered the job but they refused to meet his demands re. expenses?

Not happy with joint managers. Can't recall it working successfully for any other counties. Wouldn't have minded seeing Mulgrew get a crack on his own.

As I recall, it took Mickey Harte coming on board for them to win an All-Ireland-or is that what the wink is all about?

Mind you, an Ulster Title would be a start :) .

Anyway, it may not come to pass

Bonner and Mulgrew may pass on Donegal job

    Donegal managerial process "fatally flawed"

    24 October 2008

Declan Bonner and Charlie Mulgrew have released a joint statement claiming that the process for appointing the new Donegal football manager is "fatally flawed" and have called for a "independent procedure".

The pair, who applied on a joint managerial ticket, failed to be appointed at Wednesday night’s county board meeting after John Joe Doherty, addressed the meeting and clarified his position relating to expenses that saw the initial job offer to him withdrawn following phone conversations with county chairman Sean Kelly.

Speaking on his own behalf, Bonner said: "John Joe was treated badly last week, but Charlie and me are in the exact same situation now.

"Charlie is very, very annoyed, like myself. I’m out of the equation unless there are major strides to remove the officer board.

"Charlie and myself weren’t given an opportunity to address that meeting. We were told that our managerial ticket was going to be processed, but then John Joe came and gave his speech. We were told the whole mood in the room changed after this speech."

Meanwhile, Donegal captain Kevin Cassidy has accused the county board of "making a mess" of appointing a new manager.

He said: "There comes a time when you have to stand up and ask serious questions. If you wanted to mess things up you couldn’t have messed things up any better. It seems Donegal always wants to do its dirty washing in public."

    Lacey fires parting shot

    24 October 2008

Donegal footballer Karl Lacey, who next month departs these shores for New Zealand has branded the treatment of the county team a ’disgrace.’

Lacey is travelling down under for six months and will miss the entire league campaign, but should be available for the championship next summer.

However, the former All-Star is less than impressed with the selection process of a new county manager and the way that the county squad was treated during the year.

"I wish I could say it was hard to walk away from the football, but it was totally the opposite. I had my decision made before I even talked to any of my team mates. As previously mentioned, I have been involved in a number of teams, and the way our players are treated in this county is a disgrace," said Lacey.

"Being involved in these different teams, you realise the difference and notice how players should be treated and how well other counties look after their players and I’m not just talking about the bigger teams like Tyrone and Kerry.

"I’m talking about the smaller counties as well. Donegal GAA is miles behind everyone else, even when I was involved this year with Jordanstown. There were 40 players involved in our panel, and each and everyone were looked after exceptionally well."

This process has turned into an absolute farce. John Joe Doherty, Declan Bonner, Charlie Mulgrew and Jim McGuinness were all great servants to the county and they have all been treated very very shabbily by the county board. If common sense got a chance to prevail, which it probably won't due to the imcompetence of the board, the members of the board should step down en masse. They are an absolute joke, belittling such great GAA men as they have done.

Martin McHugh seems to have the right idea in that he won't get involved with them at all.

Agreed, it really is a farce at this stage.

John Joe Doherty had his say at last week's meeting and tonight it's the turn of Declan Bonner and Charlie Mulgrew.

    It just drags on.

John Joe voted in 27 for; 19 against; 7 abstained.

Nice to see a united front :(

Jesus, 27 for him while 26 didn't vote for him. He's being hung out to dry.

    I wish him well.

would not worry too much about the voting as you will have your usual north/south divide

Absolute joke though, what has happened.

Am happy though, its John Joe and not them other 2.
