Northern Ireland National Anthem

Ok, i dont know where else to ask this but im curious.
Why doesnt Nrth. Ireland have its own national anthem? God save the queen is played at e.g Nrth Ireland soccer matches.
Scotland and wales have their own........... so why not the north?

It's very odd when Northern Ireland play the likes of Scotland away. Really strange to see the Scots booing GSTQ.

I think Norhtern Ireland will get its own Athemn. It wont be Danny boy though!

I myself find GSTQ a joke, what else could a hymn to an hereditary monarch and self styled defender of the faith asking a supernatural being to protect her so she can reign over her subjjects be ?

Maybe the Sex Pistols version of GSTQ be played instead

Wales is a principality, whereas N.Ireland is neither a principality nor a nation. It is two thirds of a province.

Yes, Wales isn't split between two communities with separate political views on how they want to be ruled and who by. I doubt a national anthem would suit both communities. What language would it be in? What would it be about? The unionists will want to keep GSTQ and the nationalists will want to keep Amhrán na bhFiann. Not to mention, the North isn't a nation.

That's the difference.

I thought it was only the England Football/Rugby teams that had Hi-jacked GSTQ - complete madness one part of the UK using it as 'their' Anthem - Northern Ireland & England should have their own Anthems (unless its a full UK team) in which case GSTQ is fine, may I suggest 'Oh Danny Boy' for N.Ireland & 'Jerusalem' for England.

There's about 50 verses to GSTQ, that is about verse 3 I think. One which is not and as fars as I am aware, has never been, used. Maybe you could translate the Soldiers Song or us so we can see how peace loving the Itish National Anthem is? (If you know the words that is, half the country don;t seem to.

Anyway, I'm with Camelot on this, i would like to see NI drop it as well as England. I much prefer Jerusalem as an England National Anthem. Id also like to see England have an English patron saint as well, not just one we time share with the Poles, Russians, Germans and Milanese.

BTW, the Cardiff fans booed it at Wembley this year as well.

So you think trying vainly to disparage the Irish national anthem will change the words of gstq ?

Personally, I don't think N.I. Should have it's own anthem because it's not a seperate nation, simple as that.

A lot of national anthems have violent lyrics-America and France for example. The difference is the violence in GSTQ is directed at a part of the union its supposed to represent.

Well in fairness, Amhrán na bhFiann is a song that illustrates the fight for independence. If England had of giving us our independence peacefully - then I'm sure it would have been called Amhrán na gCraic.

At least it's about our country, and not about some tattered old, outdated concept like the Queen.

Some Scottish people do not think it is a good idea to be in the Union and some of them object to GSTQ because it offends Scottish people. Some of them even have the temerity to object to the whole idea of a monarchy!!

Notice that they don't ask the English if they want independance? there is probably a larger percentage of "Nationalist" in England than there is in Scotland or Wales.

I can't wait for the day that England is free from its Scottish overlords:D

Scottish teams nowadays tend to play Flower of Scotland before their matches but until the 1980s it was always God Save the Queen, at rugby matches anyway.

One of my abiding memories from my youth was that GTSQ when played in Murrayfield was always accompanied by mass whistling. Clearly the good rugger buggers of Scotland were less than pleased.

The Irish anthem is a reflection of our struggle to gain independence which has dominated the political landscape for hundreds of years and so is wholly appropriate.

Their anthem? I could have sworn it was the Queen's anthem. Where does it mention Scotland? Or anything Scotland have accomplished, or the struggles Scotland has faced?

I don't know how you could infer that from my post. Personally I prefer the Irish version, even though it doesn't rhyme and the English one does.

And musically, it's not great, few anthems are indeed, but the crescendo at the end is great at the start of a match.

I can't believe nobodies mentioned Ghost Town yet!
If the demographics keep going the way they are personnally I'd like "Take it Down from the Mast" to be the NI anthem as it does the job of offending deeply not only the all the British but also the majority people from the Republic.

Actually England has no anthem either. 'Land of Hope and Glory' and 'Jerusalem' are considered unofficial anthems, but GSTQ is all that's played at England games too.

GSTQ's been used all over the place; it was also used as the first German anthem, the Swedes still use it as a royal patriotic song and it is the melody of the anthem of Liechtenstein.

Damned ugly tune though.

What way are the demographics going? Doesnt seem to much much change really. Hard to find accurate data on the subject.

I don't deny what you said is inaccurate, but the British monarchy costs the Irish nothing in taxes, north or south so why get upset about her. When the British people decide they have had enough of the monarchy, then it will go. there are many constitutional faults with the monarchy, the ban on them marrying Catholics for example, but when these faults become an issue they are addressed in an appropriate manner.

As for where I am from, the clue is in the name;)

Am I a nationalist? I'm not sure if i am to be honest. The trouble with being classed as an English nationalist is that it has been hijacked by goose stepping scumbags.

Nationalism is great and I am all for it, inside a sporting stadium. Then afterwards I would love to meet nationalists from other nations for a pint or three.

Where nationalism goes horribly wrong in my opinion, is that it quite often gets confused for not respecting others rights to be nationalists.

at the end of the day though, there are more important things to worry about.
