It would depend on the insurers - cannot give a definitive answer without knowing the insurer, policy and level of cover. Its a common enough occurance these days so it is likely actually covered in your policy document.

If they have been stolen and the cars haven't yet; get them to a dealers ASAP to get the old keys de-coded from the system.

If the keys are robbed through your letterbox by use of a hook on a pole, it would all depend on whether or not you have Dipsh*t Cover.

Hmm It's a tricky one, I don't think they are covered if their stolen from your house. Your policy could say some useless mumbo jumbo about "neglegence" or something like that because the keys weren't on your person.

But hopefully I'm wrong and you get it sorted!

Surely the only time neglegence/not in your possesion is overlooked is when you're actually asleep!!??

My mechanic had his ST stolen from his driveway, keys taken from his hall table, and i'm pretty sure he was covered.

This is a "what if" post, It hasnt happened. Ive edited the thread subject to make this clear.

Its impossible to fish keys from our letterbox but we keep keys down stairs.

Im wondering do we need to review this. If someone kicks in our front door and robs our keys and then the cars through no fault of our own Id hate not to be covered.

Im might just call the insurance companies and ask them.

I'd check it out defo, but i remember this actually happened to my cousin but it was covered under her house ins not the car ins. Then again it does break down to the small print in your policy and the t&c's

    It depends on your policy.
There are certain extras that would cover this if "force or violence" is used to take the keys.
And if they are stolen from your home, once it wasn't a family member that took them.
Make sure you report it to the gardai.

...again, it depends on your policy and your insurer.

I work for an insurance co. btw

fwiw i would still leave your keys downstairs.
i would rather wake up in the morning to my car gone then to be woke up during the night by somebody with a knife to my GF neck or my neck by somebody demanding keys!

The keys would be covered under your car policy not your house policy

    Covered under the motor policy.

Force or violence doesn't have to be used in the house, just in general.

Should have made that a bit clearer

Only you OP can answer this.
You have to read the Terms and conditions of your car cover and check with your insurer from there.

insurance companys are a little like graveyards, they take in everything but give nothing out

If the insurance company was going to cover it, most of the time it wouldn't effect your no claims discount.
Getting new keys and immobilizer re-programmed can cost a couple hundred euro. Would be worth your while.

I'd ask them first (obviously) to make sure that is correct
