    Anyone else march onto the pitch at Kilcohan Park at half time of a match after Johnny Matthews was sacked as manager?

    * * *
    Anyone else descend upon the car out in Lismore Park that contained the "water rats"?

    * * *

    Anyone else sit on the sidelines when Man Utd played Waterford in 1990? (or was in 91? - Man U won 4-0

    * * *

    Anyone else see themselves on Today Tonight marching in the Waterford Crystal Strike all those years ago?

    I was definitely at the first three cant remember the march though , that was some buzz on the pitch that day "bring back Johnny" , the chairman Eamon Reid I think it was came on to the pitch and pleaded with us to get off , the water rats was great I can still see the van driving up Paddy Browns absolutely wrecked .
    As for the Man Utd match all I can remember is Mark Hughes abusing the Waterford backs

    I climbed the wall at Kilcohan Park to watch Man U. Pallister dribbled around about 5 men to score their 3rd or 4th goal, probably his best goal ! Man U were Euro Cup Winners Cup champs at the time.

    Did that happen in Lismore Park too? I remember it happened outside my house in Hillview alright.

    1st and 3rd. I still have the video of Waterford playing Manchester United. I was on the sideline with my father who was recording and photographing the match. I can actually remember the poster for the game and have a signed programme lying around somewhere too.

    Was present for 1, 2 & 3.

    Anyone in Kilcohan for the game against Bordeaux in 1986? Jean Tigana played centre half that day

    *****

    Anyone watch Fat Sam's go up in a blaze?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,641 ✭✭✭gscully

    I was at the Lismore Park protest.

    Was at the Bordeaux game too. Cue terrace singing of 'Tigana is a w**ker!'

    Didn't go to the Man Utd (spit) game, but was at the Arsenal game in '86. A lanky Niall Quinn on the bench. No sign of new signing Charlie Nicholas. Arsenal took the lead through a diving header by Martin Hayes and the Blues later equalised through a Paul Cashin penalty. Finished 1-1.

    Kilcohan also saw the Al Finuchane testimonial game where Waterford played Eoin Hand's Limerick side. The Blues paraded the FAI Cup, while I think Limerick had the league trophy (but not sure). All I really remember is the smell of deep heat from the dressing room.

    I also took part in a guard of honour walk down the quay alongside a trailer with John Treacy on it just after he got back from winning silver in LA '84.

    Another athletics event saw Eamonn Coghlan, Steve Cram and John Treacy run from the RSC and do a road-route. I was a spectator at that.

    Didn't see the Fat Sam's blaze, but was in there the night before...and sad to say, was never in there again.

    Does anyone remember the Garrett blaze? Now that was scary!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,336 ✭✭✭tonc76

    Was at the Arsenal game and a mate of mine was the Arsenal mascot!

    Was on The Mall for John Treacy's return

    The Garrett blaze was spectacular :)

    What was Garrets (I feel so young)

    Anyone else see themselves on Today Tonight marching in the Waterford Crystal Strike all those years ago?

    My other half was the little boy holding a banner nearly bigger than himself, or so the story goes......

    Garrett was (is) a factory on the industrial estate. The big green place opposite B&L, There was a hugh fire there back in the eighties. I remember it alright, I not sure exactly when it was however I do remember seeing the flames from all over the city.

    They were guys hired by the city council, during the water rates disputes i the late 80's early 90's, to turn off water from the mains outside people's houses.

    I remember this cos my mam was one of the women sitting on the bonnet of the car trying to stop them driving off. and my father cemented over the mains shore outside our house so they couldn't turn our water off.

    i remember it was a man in a wheel chair that blocked them with some women in the area.it was about 2pm the kids were coming from school and joined the protest placing bikes in front of the van.then the rats from limerick in a hi ace van had a bit of bad luck when they got 4 punctures!the crowd grew and workers from the glass and industrial estate joined the protest.i remember brian o shea returning from the dail that evening to talk to the crowd and it was near midnight when they left the rats go.they drove that hi ace with police escort up browns road on the rims.i remember it now like it was last week but id say the rats will never forget it.

    IIRC, they were drafted in from Wexford. It made the RTE news and I remember seeing myself on TV standing on a wall in Lismore Park, while across the road in Larchville, people were hanging out their windows.

    It would never happen in this day and age. If they came down to turn off the water, they would first have to find the student whose car is parked on top of the tap :D

    Yeah Remember the blaze in garrett, watching from the graveyeard side, memory might be foggy on this but I remember the way the smoke moved in a rolling fashion, over walls etc.. and the stink!
    On that point, remember when the industrial estate used to stink of various chemicals and things being melted and burned?

    I was at the Man Utd game
    Also at the Water Rats protest, people in action, sadly the last time I saw it in Waterford :(

    Any one Remember the Coke Lorry over turning behind the Glass Pitch and Putt? We filled a pallett of stuff, I remember the driver saying only take the stuff on the ground and not out of the lorry :D Cops were stuffing the wagon that day also :D

    I Remember John Tracey's homecoming.

    What about the circuit of Ireland Rally's over easter? Or the Nissan Classic Cycling? Tour de France in waterford and dungarvan?

    The Beat on the Street and Electric Eddie (or the Beating on the street as it was sadly)?

    On a very sad note the Kyle Curran murder was a significant event in the city in the way the innocence of kids carefree playing on the street came to an end, really scared us as kids at the time, god bless his soul.

    Brought in from Limerick I seem to remember, because none of the Waterford guys would do it, could be wrong on that but it's my memory of it.
    Didn't they fill the shores with cement so people couldn't turn the water back on?

    He was a young lad (can't remember the age of the top of my head) from hillview who was murdered in the fields up there by the GAA pitches. It was a shocking crime for the area at the time (still would be now) and anybody from waterford who was around at the time will have vivid memories of it. The ptich up there is now called The Kyle Curran Pitch. The man who killed him was released recently I believe.

    Yes, I remember it. I believe the IRA had something to do with it? They got in through the roof and waited above the ceiling until the place was clear.

    As a result, the security fencing was erected around the bank, and you Larchville folk had to find somewhere new to go for a 'stall' :D

    I think I read in a Paul Williams book that it was a gang with an ex-paramilitary member who orchestrated the robbery. It might have been The Athy Gang or someone like that. They dressed up as workmen and climbed all over the roof in plain view! Really good thinking in fairness.

    yes and yes.
    and it was 1990, man utd won the fa cup that year and waterford united were first division champions, and it was the first game the following season when we invaded the pitch in kilcohan in protest of the sacking of the great man himself johnny matthews.
    that was waterford uniteds downfall and never really recovered since.
