Charlie Brooker's "You Have Been Watching"

Starts 7th July on Channel 4. Details here

Doesn't sound too bad.. sorta like a Harry Hill's TV Burp mixed with 8 Out Of 10 Cats.
You Have Been Watching is a new eight-part series which will air this summer. It involves host Charlie Brooker airing his familiarly trenchant views on broadcasting, alongside "funny and famous" guests who will, each in turn, be quizzed on the week's TV shows.

Each week Charlie offers his unique interpretation on the curious, wonderful and often inglorious world of television, and four guests in turn will be quizzed on the week's TV highlights.

You Have Been Watching features the highs and lows of programming both in the UK and worldwide, presenting a unique take on the shows that command the greatest following - but perhaps shouldn't - and reveals some of the worst programmes that claim to be entertainment.

Ooh good stuff. I'm a big fan of Charlie and David Mitchell is usually good fun on these types of shows.

Huge fan, sky +'ing (since when did that become a verb :L) this one.

Yay, yet another TV panel show!

No, not yay another panel show. Yay another Charlie Brooker series in the guise of a panel game show. Subtle but important difference.

    Still a panel show.

I love Charlie Brooker, but like any panel show it depends on the guests.

If they have a token woman/David Walliams etc. it won't be good.

    You're a panel show.

I'm not sure about this concept even though I love Brooker's work. He works best when he isn't restrained by a format. His writing and screenwipes were all about him letting rip with no interference. He may well be constrained by a panel format and certainly by the guests he has on.

Oh Christ, David Walliams. Talking about nothing in a stupid voice ain't funny, if only someone would tell him.

Ah yes, the infamous photo of Charlie Brooker "eating his own arse".

Yeah, heard about this on his twitter account. If this idea does not appeal you might be pleased to hear he is working on a series called Gameswipe, which will be like screenwipe. Except with games. Probably.

Plusing might be a better verb or just simple recording :o

Don't know about this show. Unless it does something different than the usual quiz-com it won't be worth it.

So far he doesn't seem to work with an audience, and the panel, wow, looks like not many people were available.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,737 ✭✭✭BroomBurner

I like reading Brooker in the Guardian, but not sure on this. It's never a good idea to spend a whole TV show ripping the proverbial out of other TV shows.

    Funny autocue gag though :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,431 ✭✭✭✭Basq

A quiz show with shag all pace!

At least he addressed Mini-Hitler immediately.

Brooker's bit about The One Show was the only funny bit so far.. and that's because it could have been straight outta Screenwipe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

    Jamelia ffs

Not thrilled so far, but I'll give it a whole episode before I decide.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,316 ✭✭✭✭amacachi

The autocue bit has to have been written by Brooker, the stuff he's reading from the the autocue ain't great.

Yeah, maybe he's not writing his own stuff, which would be a shame and a waste.

Good to see they made decent use of the old Strike it Lucky set. Recycling ftw.

Have to say that was hilarious, though it may have been more down to the subject matter than anything else.

Anyone else notice how the yanks had a feckin red hand next to "IRA"? Good ol' research.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

Eh! IRA of course, more experience.

At least the other two are saying things, she keeps going

    "I don't like it, it's bad and....I dunno it's just like.... *laughs*"

All three guests suck though, Hitler man being the least offensively bad

Lol the IRA Taliban thing was actually very funny. Slingshots indeed. American TV though, should have been obvious who would win.

Yeah, the guests suck on this.

    Ah, Death Wish, lol

I wouldn't be too pushed.. really wasn't great!

Like I said, the best bits were the bits that could have been outta Screenwipe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

Well that was rubbish... Charlie Brooker is better than that crap

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,316 ✭✭✭✭amacachi

Sad to hear that, forgot to tune in tonight. Like I said in my earlier post though I had reservations about this format.

It was very scattered, C4 should ditch the guests and just make another Screenwipe :pac:

Except they didn't make it the first time - it was Zeppotron, an Endemol company, for BBC(4). But that did give a good laugh when he was exposing wonky Big Brother editing practices and was sneering at the Celebrity BB with Shilpa and the race row, and then had to point out that his own programme was also part of the Endemol beast!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

I have to watch this just out of pure curiosity. I know i will probably hate it :(

don't see the difference between this and screenwipe, ie when yerman calls him out for criticising deadliest warrior and then indulging in it, thats his career isn't it.

Brooker made his career out of picking on easy targets, if its not broke etc...:D

Jeez, a lot of you have very high standards it seems. Either that or are just impossible to please. I actually thought it was quite good. Loved the bit with the IRA versus the Taliban. :D

I actually enjoyed it. I'm not normally one for this kind of show, I reckon there's already way too many panel shows, but damnit it, I laughed a lot.

The two guys were carrying Jamelia though, she was hopeless, comedically speaking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,747 ✭✭✭MikeHoncho

I thought it was fine and will probably watch again. Not the most original program by any stretch but Brooker is good enough to keep me entertained for the duration. Found Jamelias tits very distracting but enjoyable none the less. Better guests will be needed though.

I suppose I was expecting something different. Kind of like Frost but about the media.
