SkyPlus with no telephone line

I currently have Sky+ and have it connected through the telephone line. I am looking to get rid of the telephone line because I dont use it and the line rental is too expensive. If I get rid of the telephone line will it affect my Sky+ viewing?

No, not at all, but, if you have a "multiroom" card, the phone connection to both Digiboxes is mandatory. Otherwise you can disconnect after a year. (In practice you can usually disconnect after a month because Sky only check multiroom connections.)

I got SKY+ installed last week with no phone line and so far no problems.
The only real point of the phone line connection is for Box Office, which I don't use anyway.

Box Office can be ordered with a mobile anyway.

You are breaking the contract between you and Sky by getting rid of the telephone line. If you do this you are liable to charges. Sky will fine you, best to give them a call.

Every now and again (couple of times a fortnight) Sky ring your Sky Box, if the Sky box answers well & good it disconnects. If there is no answer then Sky will ring again later, if there is still no answer you will be liable to charges.
Sky carry this out to prevent neighbors sharing boxes ie you giving the neighbor a multi-room box.

Not if you are gone past your 12 months.

    1. The installer didn't seem to care.
    2. My old standard sky box was never connected to the phone line in 8 years.
    3. Don't have a multiroom sub.
    4. The nearest neighbours house is about 12m to the right side.
    5. If they do call and ask questions, I can just blame the installer.

I am more worred about remembering to put the bin out for collection then getting a call up from Sky. :D

    ????

Sorry but that's nonsense in my opinion!

I've had Sky for 5+ years, I've never had any box connected to a phone line, whether in contract or not. I just got HD installed on Saturday by an official Sky installer and he even recommended not to connect the phone line! (risk of lightening damage, etc).

I know they do insist on it for multi-room alright, but otherwise no need.

Well thats what I was told. I have never heard of anyone been charged but I was told that on the phone when I asked why the boxes had to connected to the phone line at all times. Now its possible that it is only for multi room. So maybe it is nonsense, but it is what I was told.

I know that up to a few years ago, Sky did insist on a phoneline as part of their "standard installation", but then they relaxed that rule (I guess cos a lot of people were put off Sky altogether because of this rule), instead charging an extra 30/40 quid or so if you wanted a non phoneline install.

It seems they don't bother with that extra charge now, as I definitely wasn't asked for extra cash last Saturday.

SKY are very particular about this one. I got a new installation 4 months ago and the first thing the guy checked was the phone line.
About a month ago I innocently unplugged the phone. Later the picture froze on me and then a screen message said to check the phone line or your card will be discontinued. It was plugged in instantly. :p:p

We took Sky's recent offer. Last Friday we got a free standard Sky box for the kitchen and a Sky+ box for the sitting room. The Sky+ box costs us 49-euro. It was free installation. We have multi-room half price for the first 12-months. We also get our first month free (apart from the multi-room). Both boxes are connected to the phone line.

Was told that both boxes have to be connected to the phone line at all times else we may experience difficulties :)

Yes, but you are talking about a multiroom subscription, while this thread is about one Sky+ box per house.
Look at the some of the posts above to see why you need to be connected to the phone line if you have a multiroom sub.

laoisfan did say that both boxes had to be connected.

OP I think it would be best to give Sky a call.

Sam Radford was correct in his reply to you, don't mind any of the other nonsense thats being posted.
When you got your sky installed you more than likely signed a contract stating you will keep your box connected to a phoneline for 12 months, If it is over 12 months since you got it, just plug it out and get rid of the phoneline, you are not obliged to tell Sky you are doing it.
That is the official line but it seems to me that Sky don't bother making callbacks anymore for single installs, only for multiroom now.

I think you can pay a fee (something like €37) to waive connection to a landline. Sky charge you a "administration fee" for the installer to manually activate your account, rather than the box making its own phone call. I guess once installed this way you will not have to worry about the box being told to phone home - and getting in trouble if it is not connected.
You will have to phone in a voice call of your own for Box Office programmes.

btw ... I think the box gets a signal over satellite to call in, rather than Sky making a phone call to the box.

OP talk to Sky about it. I'm sure they will be glad to help. They will arrange a safe alternative or else don't bother but you may loose signal ect and be without Sky T.V.

Not entirely true,You won't lose signal you'll just loose access to your sky subscription channels but will still be able to receive FTA channels
