So, ive been trying to look this up but without great success so i said id ask!

Im heading to halls in about 2 weeks and wondering what the story is with getting to from college?!

I plan walking/cycling a fair bit but if its raining i cant clearly, so is there like a direct bus route or is it on a bus line?! The nearest luas is a bit away from halls though afaik?! Oh, and after nights out whats the easiest way of getting home?

And another question, ive a little suitcase that id be planning on bringing home every weekend, so if i bring that in on fridays tocatch the bus home, would there be anywhere to leave it!? I might be planning on arriving up on the monday morning aswell rather than the sunday evening so would be handy to have somewhere for the bag!

    Thanks very much....

You can get the 14A which will bring you to town.

The stickys, and about a hundred threads deal with this, but however we're here to share :) The Luas is a 7 - 10 min walk from the side gate of halls. It is what you will use the most. the 14a goes from outside the front gate but it is fairly infrequent. After a night home, the best way is to share a taxi. Its probably the only way home anyway, apart from walking which I wouldn't recommend. Some students have been known to have been attacked outside that park on the Rathmines road. Its very rare but it does happen.

There are two bag rooms/cloakrooms for leaving stuff in college. One in the hamilton and another in the Arts block.

    128??? Is it gone??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 200 ✭✭Mountain_Surfer

Nope - a quick search shows that the 128 leaves pretty much every 10 mins from about 1 min walk from the main halls gate. And as a previous poster said there are 2 free cloakrooms in college. If you leave your stuff overnight there is a charge but its free apart from that. As regards to getting home after nights out, a taxi is your only man. And no matter what college night out it is you can be sure that there will be someone else heading back to halls too so taxi is not expensive. It is walkable for sure, but inadvisable - at least 40 mins

Ok thanks. I thought it strange that the 2 replies above would mention the hilariously infrequent 14A without including the 128. The other way round I could understand but.....

Eh, no it's not. It's a good 10 min walk away. If you're can't contribute correct info then don't contribute at all. I take it you're a first year who hasn't lived in Halls (or outside your mother's house) before in your life, yes?

How has he contributed wrong info? He posted a map with the path from Halls to the Luas stop clearly labelled.

And to be within a ten minute walk of such a frequent service is a blessing. Try using Public Transport outside Dublin.

Look, the fact is the bus really is right besides Trinity Halls and it drops you off at the Nassau st entrance to college. Perfect if you've lectures in the Arts block. You really couldn't have it any better. Compare this with the Luas. It's a 10min walk from Halls to the nearest stop (Milltown). Then it's another 10min walk to college when you get off at the terminal at St Stephen's Green. That's 20mins automatically added to the actually journey on the Luas. It's also more expensive than the bus. I'm only giving the OP factual info.

You probably should have mentioned that the first time then shouldn't you?

The bus also has more looneys riding it, is less frequent, and is susceptible to get caught in traffic. Oh, and your claim that it's "right besides Trinity Halls" is patently ridiculous. It's at least 200 metres which is a good one minute walk.

With a student travel card and monthly ticket, I thought the Luas worked out cheaper than the bus, though I had a hard time finding proper prices for the bus.

get yourself an €82 travel pass, which gives you 1 months travel on any luas or dublin bus in any zone, works out at round €2.60 a day.

Or you could get a bike and some wet gear and then you wouldnt have to shell out (82 x 8 months) at least €656, and its good exercise, and its quicker than the bus, and you dont have to deal with traffic, and if you count the walk to/from the luas its prob quicker than that too

I know the OP said that he would prob be doing this anyway but imo i think everyone in halls should cycle

you dont have to deal with traffic
Apart from the whole "trying to kill you" thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 234 ✭✭Heggy

The Luas only monthly student pass for the Green line is €35.50, which isn't too bad.

I myself am considering cycling, but have the starting disadvantage of never having cycled in a city before, only footpaths in town which is relatively small and not very busy. I also have to transport my bicycle from Letterkenny too.

You gret used to cycling in a town quite quickly, main problem is avoiding lunatics who want to kill you. In my experience wearing a helmet makes you a target for boy racers and taxi drivers and also just bored people in general. ..... but its fun :D

People make too big a deal of that, it's actually not that bad.

And for a novice, you pick up how to cycle sensibly pretty quickly, because you have to!

What the poster above says, it is kinda fun too. Well, I enjoy it anyway. You do have to have your wits about you, to an extent

    he's right, Im only joking.
its fine cyclign on the roads you've just got tpay attemntion while you're doing it, its like driving, in taht you ahve to watch waht youe doing and what others are doing, so people CAN pull out in front of you for no reason even when they're wrong. but you try telling the court that trhougha feedint tube :/

While I am (will be) a first year, I was in Halls several times both this year and last, and have taken both the bus and luas into town. The bus is infrequent and uncomfortable, while the luas is the opposite. Although getting one at peak time is a pain, but that's life.

The Luas Green line is a 10 minute walk from Halls. Milltown is the nearest stop and the St. Stephen's Green stop is a 5 min walk from campus. A return, for example, costs 3.50. All Luas ticket types (including weekly and monthly student ones) can be purchased from machines at the stops.

The 14A and 128 Buses stop outside Halls (two different stops). 128 is much more frequent. Single tickets are purchased from the driver on the bus and cost 1.80.

There are also several student tickets which can be purchased from shops in the city (almost every newsagents). There are 'Bus only' or 'Bus&Luas' tickets.

Also please note that you need a Student Travelcard for student tickets. These are available to purchase from House 6 during Freshers week.

    EDIT::::Thanks to the mysterious mod!!

Fixed links there. You went a bit overboard with the html code there :)

Btw I'm open to correction on any of the above. Should be a good guideline though.

Why would anyone buy a mixed bus and luas 1 month pas for €93 when they can get it for €82???

Short hop 93e is bus and rail (not luas).

I don't think anyone wants another Halls thread, so I'll just pop this in here:

Anybody know the story with parking at Halls? Is it available for student use? Is there much of it? Additional charges? Any info?

I don't know about parking in the Halls themselves but if you really wanted there's parking around the corner on Temple Road but it's pay and display from (i think) 9 til 1.
