on the top of my key is a red thing/yoke...i think its like an imobiliser..
does wnyone know if there is a battery in that red patch on the key?
thats the only thing i can think of...pls anyone reply quickly as my car is parked in a private carpark and may be towed away by the end of the day.....

Are you sure your car battery has enough charge to start the car? The chip in the key is just a transponder, it doesn't need a battery.

Once you have the key in the ignition, it should automatically disable the immobiliser. Sounds like a dead car battery. Are the interior lights dimming when you try to turn the engine over?

hi..well the battery was bought in may this year, its the right size etc.

will try get a jumpstart a little later and will let you know how i get on...
must say if it is the battery then the alternator must be gone.
this is a first in the sense that the car has not started.....mmmh:confused:

    thanks for the suggestion.

as for the interior lights.lol....never had them.

sorry ksimpson......you ment the lights on the dash of course........no,they dont appear to dim.

Newer mondeos have a fuel reset button in the left wall of the passenger footwell, try reset this...

Not 100% if this in in the 98 model tho

Hmmm. Just to be sure, have a look under the bonnet and make sure both battery cables are firmly attached to the terminals. Do you have any kind of an AA-type rescue package? It's sometimes included with car insurance.

    Hey

    2 things:

    1. If its not even trying to turn over, its probably the battery.

    2. If the battery is dead since may, you're alternator is probably shot. The battery isn't getting charged.

    That's my first thoughts anyway.

and no one has factored in the posibility of a starting motor on its way out lol. if everything lights up normally and you turn the key it might be the starter, hit it a belt of a hammer, usually does the trick lol

He's got a point, if the starter solenoid is jammed then a bit of a smack will often release it.

im being honest, ive had 3 starters go on me before and that sounds like a classic case of it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,755 ✭✭✭ianobrien

When you turn the key, do you here what sounds like a heavy click? The click is from the starter soloniod closing. If not, it may be the starter/connection to the starter or solonoid gone, assuming a good battery of course.

Do the headlights dim to practically nothing when trying to start? If so, it's a flat battery.

If the jump start doesn't work, it's time for a push start (even though them Mondeo's are heavy ba$tards to push)

Oh, IIRC, the 98 Mondeo was a 1.8 diesel, not 2.0.

Ye it could be the battery? Has it been going easily recently? Then its its the battery

If so & you have been constantly tryin to start it you could have wreaked the startin motor.. but the starting motor can go anyway if you get me!

Also it could be the temperature controller if that goes the car thinks its either hotter/colder then it is & gives it too much or too little petrol...

    Could be your fuel pump?

Could be alot of things.. get a tow rope & get it the **** out of there!

Does work but putting the car in gear and rocking it backwards and forwards a bit is a little less drastic and often has the same effect.

:cool:odd you say that...why?because when i bought it a yr ago,it was advertised as a 1.8td........however,recently,when i put my reg into mywheels.ie it says its a 2l......i always thought it was a 1.8 but the engine is huge......it certainly looks big enough for a 2l engine...interesting comment.thanks:confused:

OH DEAR GOD, did you not get a log book? Does it not say it on your engine?
You might wanna ring your insurance company and tell them because if you crash you have NO INSURANCE...

You wouldn't want to be crashing into a nice new BMW & have 60k debt on your head!

For starters (no pun) I would put a note on the window with your mobile number so some understanding skin will show a bit of leniency while your stopped in their private carpark. Jump leads would be the first thing to try alright.

If your having trouble getting someone up to give you a jump go to B&Q and you can buy a box that re-charges your battery.. its €40 but you will have it forever!

First, the OP says it a Diesel, and anyway, them 1.8 diesels are fairly agricultural in the technology dept. I fairly doubt there is a temp controller for fueling at startup. The only temp controller in that engine is the rad!

just an update....i rolled the car tonight to a safe place so it wont be towed away....my mate forgot his jumpleads but after looking at the car tonight he reckons its not the battery, the lights on full beam never dipped or died while we tried to turn the ignition.

rem their is no noise,no click, nothing when the key is turned.we came up with the idea that it may be a fuse........will get someone to look at it tomo.
