Which iPod to buy - for my Godson not me!

I've never owned one of these, but I want to buy one as a present.

If it were for myself, then the new Nano would be a no-brainer. With both FM radio and a video camera, in addition to tons of music storage, I can't see why anyone would buy the Classic. The Nano is also smaller.

But, kids have their own views on these things.

So, at the risk of making a big mistake, should I be considering the Classic?

    Cost is not a factor.

    Thanks.

    D.

I love the classic, but I have a huge music collection and like having the choice with me - so capacity is the big factor with the classic I guess.

Cheers. That's what I figured. For me it would be the multi-task nature of the Nano.

    Any other views?

    Thanks.

Depends on the person - if he's really into music (and / or films) then the touch is useless. Most people i know would have 30-odd gigs of music and upwards, and between the touch's storage and rubbish battery (compared to classic) i'd go with classic.

However the touch would make a cooler present, and would prob be appreciated more cuz of all the apps and games he could get for it. The touch is essentially an iphone without the ability to call and text so makes for a v good present!

Thats exactly why I said the iPod Touch and 16GB because it is cheap and it's the max size of the Nano he was considering.

OP, you can get it up to 64GB as well but it all depends on your budget. It has music, video, games, wireless etc. A 17 year old would love it.

Oh ya i forgot there was a 64gb version now. OP go for the 32gb - covers all your bases!

Yeah, the iPod touch, that's why I asked what age he is. Probably the coolest godfather in the world if he got one as a pressie.......:D

I'd go for either an iPod touch or nano too. Both are pretty cool media players that any 17 year old would love. The classic is falling into the category of old tech at this stage. What size you get depends on how into music he is.

    Cheers guys. :)

As I wrote above, having radio and a video camera would make the Nano a no-brainer for me. But, I can see the appeal of game playing and having all those add-on apps to download.

Agree also that the Classic is old tech now. Multi tasking is where it's at these days.

    Just checking..........

Is that the only difference between them? Is the iPhone therefore the full monty, so to speak?

    Thanks.

Edited: Never asked about where to buy. Are the prices of these things very controlled or does it pay to shop around?

    Ta.

Ya the phone aspect is pretty much the only difference. No need to shop around, Very tighty controled prices.

As you say, the iPhone would be top of the pile. There are a number of differences between it and an iPod touch though. The main one being that you can make calls on the iPhone. Also, the iPod touch doesn't have a camera (for pictures and video), built in GPS and has worse external speakers. Both devices can access the internet via wifi, but the iPhone can use the 3G network to go online anywhere (this is where the monthly subscription comes in).

As for prices, they're usually pretty standard in most retailers. Serious savings can be made if you can get one from the US but that involves buying it over there yourself or having a family/friend send it over.

    Hope this helps

If cost is not any problem, then an iPhone 3GS 32GB with no bill: http://www.o2online.ie/wps/wcm/connect/O2/Home/Shop/Phones/iPhone/iPhone+3GS/Speak+easy

I'd cream myself if I opened a present and someone had gotten it for me.
