What the fu4k is wrong with some people?

Having read the comments on the recent Brian Lenihan thread discussing his current medical condition, some people truely disturb me to the core.
I am not looking for any discussions on his illness, everyone should not jump to conclusions until an official diagnosis is made in the coming days.
Hopefully we can see a case like this making some impact on the lives of both the minister and other sufferers. Horrible situation.

I, like most people on this thread have witnessed the effects of cancer, and it is truely horrific both mentally and physically for all parties involved.
Can any boardsies offer any insights into how people can be so mentally fcuked as to wish death upon someone they don't actually know?
It truely depresses me what some people are capable of. Best wishes to all cancer sufferers. There is always hope.

    Hell is other people.

There's nothing you can do about it, and thinking about it will just drive you mad/depress you.

People are a lot ''harder'' on the Internet.

I wouldn't even say they're messed up in the head etc, just ignorant. And attention whores.

Politicians. They´re just human beings, some people just can´t get their heads around that.

The internet can bring out a horrible side of people.

It's not the internet. These people really are horrible. They're just afraid to show it in the real world.

The sad reality is a lot of people get a kick out of other people's failures/problems.

I think there are some people who will think of this as a good thing, as some sort of revenge. But they can't afford broadband to be able to post on here. They're probably are a few, a very, tiny, small few who he pushed over the edge. And I've no problems with them wishing him death, they're as unfortunate as him.

The people wishing him death on here, they're just *****.

All replies here raise important points.

@AAARGH - True, I actually tend to think about humanity as a whole, and I refuse to accept that
rational people can not feel depressed with the state of humanity:( I think it's more than just plain
ignorance. Depressing is an understatment. Really puts things into perspective...

Ya great im a member of young fine gael and I think Brian Lenihan is an eijit wo hasnt a clue but I would never wish harm on him. Iv lost a brother to cancer when he was 18 and it is a horrible illness. Heres hoping he recovers and this comes from all sides of the political spectrum.

I shudder when I think that these types of people are ingrained
throughout daily life. It has to be a purely mental issue. Can't
understand how "normal" people can be like that.

There are family members I can't even speak to anymore
because of instances of pure, undistilled evil which won't
be discussed here for obvious reasons. Crazy.

Some of the worst examples of people wishing death on Lenihan and others in similar threads are the nicest people in the world if you bump into them in the real world while others are exactly as you imagine them.

I know one person whom to the outside world appears upon first impressions to be a thoroughly decent person but is in fact a neo nazi who has some of the worst views on race that I have ever read, the only place she airs these views is through the internet. I discovered this when I was recently fixing her hard drive and while backing everything up came across a folder dedicated to beliefs.

For me the biggest thing about the Lenihan debate is the hypocrisy so evident. It's the same every time someone in the public eye whom is generally disliked gets ill/dies, there is this sudden turning of the tide in the way they are spoken about. we saw it with Michael Jackson, Jade Goody and we will continue to see it time after time.

Messed up stuff tbh. I understand and can generally pick
up on some overly nice people. Narcissists come to mind.
Still, you can never be too certain. It's pretty complex.

You can nearly justify a hermit existance considering self
gain is the most important trait of human existance at large.
Not everybody fits this definition by the way.

And AH is all too often the ninth circle. Sorry but it's true.

I hope Brian Lenihan makes a full recovery.I think it's vile that the media broke this story the day after Christmas when his family must be devastated and struggling to come to terms with the news. I'm not an FF supporter but anyone who sees this situation as an opportunity to vent some spleen over the political situation is just repulsive to me.

I dont like brian lenihan end of. Just because I dont like him dosent mean I think or I wish he would die. This is common human desency not hypocrisy. I HATED Jade Goody. Did I celebrate when she got cancer? NO I hoped that she would pull through. Completely different scenario.

No one is saying that you should wish death upon him. I just find it hard to swallow when people suddenly go from hating a public figure to felling sorry for them once something bad happens to them.

The Jade Goody comparison was made as an example of the way popular opinion suddenly shifts once a celebrity gets ill/dies. Look at the tabloid coverage leading up to her death, she went from being a racist bigot to the virgin Mary reborn. I've never understood the mentality that once a tosser dies they suddenly become a nicer person. I've seen it happen in real life where drunken wife beaters suddenly after death are looked upon as the nicest people to ever walk the earth.

This out pouring of sympathy we so often experience when someone we don't know gets ill/dies is growing old. There are hundreds of people dieing every week in our towns with no one attending the funerals.

Ok nobody that I know thought that Jade Goody was the virgin Mary reborn infact alot of people thought she was still an eijit who was trying to raise money for her children. Alot, including me, also thought that she was still an eijit for shilling herself the whole way. Same with lenihan. I, as many others do, think the man is incompetent and is a terrible politician. Just because this is our opinion dosent mean we have changed our opinion. We want him to fight it and hope that he succeeds against such a horrible illness.

    It is the internet.

These people would never think of saying any of the hate filled stuff that they are spewing out here.

And certainly not to a group of strangers.

I wouldn't think that it is that they particularly horrible people, it's just that they possibly aren't educated enough about certain issues.

I know a fair few people that have suffered with cancer, people very close to me.
If they had experience with cancer they certainly wouldn't be saying the **** they are.

I think we are getting off topic here.

I think most of the apathy being displayed here is down to ignorance. As it is in so many instances.

I challenge any man, woman or child who has held the hand of their parent (as Brian Lenihan is) and watched them die to Pancreatic Cancer, to wish ill on someone they dont even know.

No man or family deserves it.

    Thread cleaned up.

This thread is not about rape.

    Please keep on topic.

To be honest I thought the thread was about how horrible people are.

Would have thought that rape and assault were ripe subjects with regards to this.

I hope he got to tell his family about it before they heard about it on the news.

I've known people who ony found out a couple of months down the line that a loved one had been diagnosed with cancer. They had their own personal struggles going on at the time the diagnosis was made, so the person diagnosed decided to keep the sad news to themselves for a while so as not to add to those struggles. :(

Unless related or a very close friend I generally wouldn't care.
Why should we? Why make a big deal out of an illness just because of media attention people.
bah i'm too tired so i'll sub to the thread and post in the morn
    /bed

This demostrates what's wrong with some people.

Well those factors (anonymity/ audience) are obviously contributory.
But obviously internet ****wad status only manifests in some people and not all.
So we're still looking for the missing variable.
Some kind of "susceptibility to ****wad status" so to speak.

F = s(A)(X) where F is ****wad status attained, s is susceptibility, A is degree of perceived anonymity and X is size of audience. :p
    So what factor(s) constitutes s.
    Anyone?
