Road bike vs hybrid on tight budget

Hi, im buying a new bike as mine is broken and i think getting it fixed is not worth it. I cycle 12kms a day, i have a hybrid with straight handle bars. I think i want a road bike, they seem better. I have heard a lot of people say bad things about them though, the wheels get warped going over bumps and you constantly get punctures etc. Then the other thing is i really would like to spend as little as i can while getting something that is good quality. Id happily buy something second hand if that is a good idea generally. Hybrids seem to be a lot cheaper though, is there some minimum price you have to spend to get a decent road bike? Any advice would be great.

    Rowan

Road bikes are more expensive partly because of the integrated brake/gear shifters.

€600 is about as low as you can go for a entry level road bike, something like a Giant Defy 4.

Road bikes are much tougher than you think. The cheapo wheels on my bike are still running true after several thousand kms and plenty of crap roads. Punctures are pretty avoidable if you keep the tyres properly inflated and run puncture resistant tyres. I've had one in the past 3000kms, and the last 1000 of those on nice tyres, with only about average protection.

Budget wise, you should be able to get something for about 500. If you can stretch to more, even better. Second hand nice road bikes don't come up very often, but they do crop up occasionally.

Oh, and a road bike is superior in every way to a hybrid.

You will get a decent hybrid cheaper than a decent road bike, that is true. Road bike prices start around €300 secondhand, €650 new for something decent.

Ok cool thanks for the advice, i think my budget is about 300 so i might look about for a used road bike.

Have a look here or here.

Tiagra is a bit better than Sora, so will tend to cost more for the same age bike. Make sure you get the right size bike.

    Or this, if it fits.

Thanks, that seems like a good way to search. Im 5 10" so i should be getting 56cm? Is it that simple?

    Yes, 56cm in traditional sizing.

If you need to tweak the reach you can just change the stem. They're cheap.

That sounds about right, I am 6ft myself and ride 58cm in most bikes. Try it out and see.
