PM to announce 6 May general election

The three main party leaders will go head-to-head live on television

Gordon Brown will announce on Tuesday morning that the general election will, as expected, be held on 6 May, BBC political editor Nick Robinson says.

You heard it here first folks!

All we need now is for Cowen to follow suit.

Labour are going to lose power in Britain, that is for sure anyway.

It's not going to be the walkover that many people think, which speaks volumes for the quality of the Tories rather than Labour.

Could a mod please change the title to 'British Election soon!'

    To avoid upset and disappointment.

David Cameron should have appointed Ken Clarke as shadow chancellor imo.

I would have been a Labour supporter up until Blair left. I have seen no clear vision of the future from Cameron other than to not do what Labour did (not a bad start, admittedly). He talk is concilatory rather than revolutionary. A poor choice in store for the British people.

There's a very good chance of a Labour-Lib Dems coalition govt coming out of the election.

Nick Clegg. I wouldn't vote for someone called Clegg, it sounds like a name that would be given to a rectal blockage, as in "I've got a huge clegg - how do I shift it?"

Why because the left wing actually cares about the normal people.

On top of Brown stopping war reporting in certain circumstances in the British media prior to the election, I see his government has also stopped the Bloody Sunday report before the election too now!

Any trick in the book to win - the only loser is freedom of speech?

Another possible example of trying to win by any method: http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2009/apr/14/iraq-war-inquiry-brown-hussein
