Well I havent rented a movie in years... and I know lots of people who are the same. But, I think dvd/ music cd's/ blu ray sales will help take the burden off

Edit: Just seen this was posted in after hours, ignore my comment:p

And yet by and large we still watch the same shows from the same networks, watch the same movies from the same studios and listen to the same music from the same record labels. The internet changes how we consume something, and leaves the old ways of doing so in its wake but it will still be the same companies profiting from it.

I think the massive fines that I've built up on my account and which I have no intention of paying is likely to kill em off first

true.........but watching programmes online is not watching tv its watching....online entertainment...........if it was called internet tv then itv would pull in alot of royalties..lol

Illegal downloading and the fact that Hollywood is pushing films to DVD and pay per view three months after the initial release will kill off Extra-vision as well as any other rental services.

Blockbuster has taken a very large hit in the States. I am not sure how much longer they will will survive.

The entire chain was sold recently for 32 million.. that's a bargain if they find a way to modernise. And even without piracy as a factor, that won't be easy with the likes Screenclick etc competing

if they sold off the money there owed to loan collectors they,d make billions by 2morro lol

Their prices are a joke. 3 or 4 euro for a new DVD would be a better price. Nice how they seem to ignore the recession, lol. Bring down your prices ye fools.

Sure they have deals, but meh.

    No, its killing it.

Anyway rental has changed a lot in the last 2 years. Pretty much since Hulu and Netflix got big. People are cutting off their TV services and pretty much going to Internet and Mailbox Rentals. Blockbuster is already on its last life, and Hollywood Video is poised to shut down altogether now.

The only thing that seems to be doing well is a new development called Redbox - and Blockbuster very, very quickly cloned the model.

Its still not working though, not entirely, and Studios are cutting deals with Redbox and BB to give them DVD early-exclusives to keep them afloat.

If anything is going to kill Xtravision - yes, its going to be faster internet.

they should do somthing online like legal downloading..........they already own the distribution and sale rights they could do it fairly easily

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,354 ✭✭✭smellslikeshoes

Their days are numbered. The internet is such an easy medium to transmit files quickly. The fact that most of the downloads of movies right now are illegal doesn't mean that illegal downloading is the problem. The reason why illegal downloading is so prevalent is because what consumers want isn't available by legal means.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 837 ✭✭✭denballs

ive never understood why they dont just bring rental dvd,s out at the same time as cinema releases and then sell the movies on ndvd a month later.........some people just prefer there own tv and couch

Lidl movies are helping kill Extravision too. And that you can buy DVDs for the price of renting them in EV.

Don't the rentals come out quicker than the DVD/Blu ray?

The employees of Extravision will kill it first. Customer focus is not a big thing with them in my experience , only last week I told one of them I'd pull him out over the counter if he grunted at me once more. Not an isolated incident where they have dispalyed their ignorance to me and others .

    * maybe it's just the two shops I go to.

    http://www.netflix.com/

$8.99/mo; Free Online Streaming, DVDs by mail

each time you mail one back they mail you the next one in your queue. And with the Roku Player (or any of the big 3 game consoles), hooks right into your Telemavisionscope

Gamefly is also basically - well, games netflix.

Kinda surprised if nobody has copied the business model over there by this point.

It'll do what it did to music. It'll change it. Services like iTunes on the back of the illegal sites changed the music landscape. The album is dying or all but dead. The days of artists/record companies making gazillions on album releases is long gone. I'd say the 70's 80's the height of that.

In a way we've seen some of the changes already. Like Rented Mule said the release trajectory has sped up. The way TV series are made has changed too. People are more likely to watch a whole series back to back now. Look at something like Dr Who. Back in the day the same story would run 4 or 5 weekly episodes. Now each one is a story all its own.

Itunes has started its pay per view movie site in europe, so that and other sites will have one hell of an impact. Now extravison and the like can only compete if they get a similar bite of the cherry. That they also release pay per view direct to your gaff. Difficult with the might of Apple etc with the backing of the content producers. They would likely get píssed off if the market was shared. Then they have their set top boxes ready to fly and a well worn method of supply in online stores. You see this with the iPad. Its OK, but there are "better" tablets out there that are actual PC's but they dont have the huge catalogue of apps that apple has rolled out with the iPhone(android are fighting uphill for the same reason).

From my reading of it companies like extravision can do one of two things. Reduce in size and become more specialised and aim at the markets the big boys arent. Much the same way the little record shops with the quirky indie and rare stuff will likely survive.

Or try and use their existing customer base to look at where the big boys are complicating things. Invest in their own version of the set top box, maybe combine with sky etc who have their on set top boxes already in the wild and push their wares at better value point than the big boys.

Xtravision sucks tbh - apart from their prices, which I don't really care about, the choice they offer is very limited and why can't they do an e-mail newsletter that tells their customers what the new releases of the week are? They strike me as a company that has become complacent about their strong position in the market at present - they will be v. vulnerable to technological advances but they don't seem to be ready to put up a fight for survival.

Xtra-vision will not be killed until eircom pull the finger out of their asses and give us proper broadband to the majority of irish users.

which is never, Xtra-vision you're safe.

I would happily pay €2 a movie to download them.
But since nobody is providing that service to me and I couldnt be bothered taking a 20 minute each way trip to XtraVision (and again to return it), and you cant rely on the Irish postal service to deliver DVDs quickly, I think I'll just download them for free anyway.

Time to cop on movie industry. Better getting €2 a movie off us than €0 a movie off us.

And given the size their userbase once was it was an opportunity missed. Then again if they tried to do it 3 years ago countrywide the delivery system werent there. Even now a lot of people in this country have slow broadband. Good luck in streaming bluray quality I would imagine?
