    Sounds deadly!

We were going to have an all-male competition ourselves, until someone pointed out that it might be sexist.

This one would be totally different though, because I could stare at the tits of (and potentially crack on to) the DJ's without fears of my sexuality being questioned.

    Can't wait.

most likely a free drink full of roofies and wake up with your knickers around your ankles back at some houseparty the next morning. what an incentive to enter!

how will they verify their sex, remeber that south african runner, wasn't man nor woman, and we all know that gender is pivotol to how good someone is at something.

i will notify the equality authority post haste.

btw, why do females get their own category in djing???

In most sports men have a genetic advantage what with being bigger, stronger, etc., but I don't think I've ever used my neanderthal hunter-gatherer prowess while playing records.
Then again, I could be doing it wrong.

would you not think of it as a means to encourage women djs? given that 99% of the djs you see in clubs are men?

    Absolutely.
After the lads give them this competition to themselves, they might even book some of them for one of their normal clubnights, and maybe even some day treat them as equal with male DJ's.

This comp will empower women in the long run.

And why's that? Because having a pair of tits would be detrimental to getting a gig? I think not.

In terms of DJing it should NEVER be about gender, colour or orientation. It's about the ****ing music, and any of this sort of nonsense only serves to detract from it. Look at that ''Girls!Girls!Girls!'' night inside in the POD with all-girl DJs which ended up being a complete flop.

This is ''encouraging'' female DJs in the same way that those ''Daisy Rock'' guitars are supposed to turn teenage girls into the next Avril Lavigne or something. I suppose you're going to tell us that they're going to get pink 1210s in for the night.
After the lads give them this competition to themselves, they might even book some of them for one of their normal clubnights, and maybe even some day treat them as equal with male DJ's.

Look at the crowd of punters at a normal techno/house night. I'd say 60-80% male. Similar even in Germany, the birthplace of a lot of the scene, where the most acclaimed clubs are basically gay hotspots. Why then if women in general aren't into the scene, would it be expected to see a lot of them DJing? Most people here got their start hanging around nights they liked and throwing around mixes, and rightly so given that they were generally supporting the scene AND had the talent.

The female DJs who are out there are most certainly the equal of their male counterparts. In many cases they end up getting paid more and generally get the velvet-glove treatment because its so unusual to see women DJing out. In fact 2 of the 3 biggest ''socialite'' DJs who do Krystle, all the Fashion shows and gallery openings etc... are women and earn accordingly.
This comp will empower women in the long run.

Someone go and shoot Germaine Greer there and then bury her so she can turn in her grave

I disagree wholeheartedly with this. I can not think of one female dj except cassy that in any way is there for any other reason than they are female. There are far far more female djs who, if they were male, would not be half as successful (Magda being the ultimate example).

This whole encourage the wimmins to get into music/politics/etc. by employing discriminatory and frankly illogical practices really grinds my gears.

99% of the dj's in clubs are men because.......and read this carefully.....

99 % of people who own turntables/buy records/etc. are men.

I actually think female dj's are over-represented in clubs versus the amount of dj's in the world who are female. Simple maths really.

I just meant in terms of the money they get / how they are promoted, not in terms of their intrinsic talent or mixing ability or whatever. If anything the whole 'equality' issue is biased towards female DJs rather than the other way around.

Just remember this is ment to be a bit of fun! the fact is there Are more male Djs out there than females! just cause It has a female theme doesn't make It sexist etc. it's just a theme and something interesting to draw a crowd to the club etc. like would you say that at an event like sensation white that it's discrimination or fascist to tell people what to wear? it's all in the name of fun!

Bar the fact that you missed the (arguably) three most talented in

    Ellen Allien
    Samantha Ronson etc...

But what the hell does that have to do with the conversation at hand anyway?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 67 ✭✭oootini

not sure what the conversation in hand is about to be honest!

Lads, at the end of the day this is about ENCOURAGING female djs to participate in a traditionally male scene. The indignation on display here is gas. Whats so wrong about a female dj comp? It’s a low key night in a local club in limerick FFS.
give the guy/gal a break like..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,401 ✭✭✭jtsuited

it's not a traditionally male scene because of any prohibitive gender rules.

so if there's a typical dj competition women aren't allowed enter?????

    that's why there's indignation.
and don't try to pass off gender discrimination as 'just a bit of fun'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 98 ✭✭nordine

I left out Anne Savage and the Tidy Girls.

Joe, this comp might just help you find the next big female dj and then the bucks should roll in for ya.

In sporting events men and women are segregated in the interests of genetic physical imbalance. I.e. To promote overall fairness.

This on the other hand... Well its a clever idea for the club owners, means every woman in the competition will bring a few of her female friends into the club which, by proxy, means more men turn up and a fuller club overall.

Lets not try and pretend its about promoting 'equality'. If anything, this is the kind of **** that really pisses off the female DJs I know - an insinuation that they can't do it off the basis of their own merits.

Plenty of men run it, mainly in drag or fancy dress, and nearly always to promote various female-centric charities like Breast Cancer or the Rape Crisis Centre. But sure, go stir up **** in a charitable event to try and defend your viewpoint.

The mini marathon is about raising money for charity in general.. it started as a means to bring women more into running/sport. it has nothing to do with segregating racing for any "genetic imbalance" as you say.
June 12th 1983 has become a very significant date for Irish women. Prior to that it was virtually unknown for women to train in public in the towns and cities of Ireland. It was little better on the world scene. By coincidence the first Women's World Marathon Championship was also held in 1983. Though women competed in marathons in various cities, the World and Olympic governing bodies frowned on distance running by women. Up to 1980 the longest distance women ran in the Olympics was 1,500 metres (1 mile approx).

Ironic isn't it that a male dj's night would not have the same pull :P Lads pull it together .. invite your male friends to the club !

Other thing is most successful female DJ's are stunners, so something to look at up in the box as well as the dancefloor (generalizing I know) .. whereas .. *cough* and no offence lads, but alot of the male dj's round the world are not exactly eyecandy in any make shape or form.

Dance Music, and the notion of going to a club to see a DJ, is generally a male thing for whatever reason. A normal night wouldn't have the same female pull because the promoters aren't terribly interested in getting men OR women into the night, just punters. People don't go there to pull or get ossified, they're there to enjoy some good music with some people who are there for the same thing.

This is asides the fact that most of the most succesfull and cricitcally acclaimed clubs in Germany (and Berlin especially) are gay hotspots. Berghain basically has a fecking bondage dungeon for gods sake.
Other thing is most successful female DJ's are stunners...

    And why's that?

So are you going to discriminate based on what these female DJ's play?

I know plenty of chicks who have proper ninja skills with a pair of 1210's, but I can absolutely guarantee that you're basically a down-at-heel trance / cheesy house promoter looking to get extra punters in with a bit of eye candy...

I find it funny how people get bent out of shape over things like this. It's just someone doing something different and I don't see anything wrong with it. I'm sure the promoter is not part of the uber-cool techno snobs crew, more standard club promoting and something like this might pull in a new/different crowd. A girl I know in Dublin has a female only DJ collective, she seems to do ok!

yes. yes you are. do i need to explain it??

    ok i will.

    female mini marathon = race
in running this race (or any race for that matter), men have a significant genetic advantage due to many things (size, muscle mass, testosterone, etc.).
there is nothing that can be done to handicap this advantage so having it as a female only competition is perfectly acceptable.

    dj comp = competition

In this competition there is ABSOLUTELY NO genetic advantage for a man (or woman) based on their gender.

So therefore, to have a gender specific entry criteria is blatant discrimination.

Now if you really couldn't figure out that that was what you were missing, well I don't even think it's worth debating with you.

because discriminating based on gender is not morally acceptable in this case.

you can say 'sure it's only a bit of fun' but if I was running a clubnight and I said it was only black people eligible for entry, or travellers, or anything like that, there would be absolute war.

Yet because it's only a bit of fun and it involves women, it's right??

    ffs
