    Hi,
Posting this on behalf of a friend who has lost a significant amount of weight recently but seems to have become more wobbly on the upper thighs and sort of grown bingo wings.

I am of the opinion that its because she has no muscle as she is incredibly weak could that be right ?

    thanks for the help

Looks like your friend made the mistake (what I believe is a mistake) of doing endless cardio to lose weight. Problem is aerobic exercise is catabolic in nature and while you will lose bodyfat you will also lose muscle mass.

I blame bodybuilding for promoting the stereotype that weights are only good for getting huge and muscular. Tbh your friend would be better served by doing Crossfit type workouts. Transform will possibly stop by at some stage. He knows his stuff! :)

Yup, another skinny fat person. You see it with most women who starve themselves, do cardio or walking and dont do resistance exercises or eat enough protein etc.

I can see some more dogma getting smashed here. I think you better explain this statement?
Problem is aerobic exercise is catabolic in nature and while you will lose bodyfat you will also lose muscle mass.
Really? Again...I think you better explain this because you are 2 for 2 so far...one more strike and I am going to have to send you to the dug out.
I blame bodybuilding for promoting the stereotype that weights are only good for getting huge and muscular.
:)...and God forbid...I mean who here would really want to be hyooge and shredded.
Tbh your friend would be better served by doing Crossfit type workouts.
Again...really....really? What type of 'Crossfit type workouts' are you suggesting? Are you saying that they should do WOD's that are only anabolic by nature? That WOD's by there very nature are 'less catabolic' than aerobic exercise?

I think you just went 3 for 3...I'm afraid you have to go back to the dugout....maybe you could read a bit more while you are there before you next come out to bat.
Transform will possibly stop by at some stage. He knows his stuff! :)
I really hope he is by at some stage because if he is going to support any or all of your statements here we are going to be in for one hell of an exciting week :)

    Research papers at the ready.........GO!

Without knowing the exact timeline, circumstances, individual situation, particulars and methods this one is pretty difficult to help with.

For example...define significant weightloss? I've lost 40kg in the past couple of years....I've a fight in a bit over a week and am going to lose 10kg between now and then...after between my weigh in and the following weekend I'll probably but on 15kg...I don't think any of those numbers are significant...but to someone weighing 50kg losing 5kg might be incredibly significant....so there's that.

Next we have the bingo wings and wobbly thighs...I've worked with figure competitors and female sprinters that have complained to me about having bingo wings and wobbly thighs...these are women with bodies that I think the majority of women involved in fitness and many of the general public would love to have....again...it's about perspective.

Lastly...I think I'm weak now...and I'm sure many people here would agree...I thought I'd just get that in before anyone else did....again it's all relative. You absolutely can not attribute any of the body composition issues you are describing with 'weakness' in and of itself.

I'm not fobbing you off...you should tell your friend to post here or to seek some guideance from someone that actually knows what they are doing.

    I hope that helps....but know that it doesn't :)

Classic Boards.ie Fitness forum....cardio....catabolic....Crossfit....just buzzwords being parroted time and time again!

How on earth can you make the above claims on the detail you have been give, and without having ever seen the person in question?

And why should they do Crossfit pray tell?!

I see Hanley is doing mountains of cardio over on his log....I'll bet he scared he's gonna turn catabolic any day now!

Prob need more detail to be fair - you really don't need to worry about catabolism unless you're doing a lot of cardio - and/or starving yourself.

Some are also scared of weight in any form. I was talking to a FOAF who told me he was going to the gym and I was asking what weight training he was doing, he said none as the last thing he wanted to do was add on more "weight". So if a man is scared of this I can imagine women being terrified of it.

Nice rants fellas but I still believe weight training and sprints will do more for a person's body than endless cardio. :)

I probably shouldn't have mentioned Crossfit either! :D

I guess its that the term "Crossfit" in itself is so variable in terms of what it means as to be almost meaningless. The workouts vary wildly in benefits, quality and complexity (often unnecessary) depending on the programmer...

thanks for your time and excellent response ( judging by some of the others I thought I was in AH forum  )

What else can I tell you ?
She has lost 3 stone sine having a baby 12 months ago
She has very little definition in the upper thighs and arms
She has very little upper body strength ( I thought due to lack of muscle )

Her current diet is fairly good if a little protein heavy ( she eats what I eat plus the odd cone or two but little else fat) no processed foods, few carbs other than porridge oats and brown pasta once or twice a week, lots of fruit and veg.

Btw those who tell you cellulite is impossible to get rid of are completely wrong she has done a wonderful job getting rid of it.

anything else of any use ?

    Thanks
    Rob

It wasn't a rant. I think you might want to read my response again. It basically came down to you putting together a collection of completely erroneous and fictious statements of little or no value to the op...which is grand...just unfortunate.
I probably shouldn't have mentioned Crossfit either! :D
No problem with you mentioning crossfit...just that your assertions in that regard were all incorrect as well.

Did you notice that although Transform has been around all day niether he nor anyone else at crossfit would touch this post with a barge pole?

That should tell you all you need to know.

As I said...having a better understanding of the subject matter would go along way to improving the quality of advice here.

    It wasn't a rant.

Before I met you in person you said something to me about how you were always taken up wrong in writing. It's gas to see people get so angry at you over it. You should have a meet and greet day to show boards.ie just how nice and cuddly you really are.

Also, you've got all the time in the world to harass people on boards but no time to get me that fabled t-shirt :pac:

With regard 'enlightening you'...I'll need your help with this.
Looks like your friend made the mistake (what I believe is a mistake) of doing endless cardio to lose weight.
Defining 'cardio' I suppose is the first part. See to me 'cardio' refers to cardiovascular work...running, cycling, rowing, air squats + kipping pull ups + push ups, swimming...that sort of thing...did you see what I did there? I'm so sneaky.
Problem is aerobic exercise is catabolic in nature and while you will lose bodyfat you will also lose muscle mass.
This statement doesn't need any clarification...it is just wrong....aerobic exercise is not catabolic in nature and it will certainly not cause you to lose bodyfat or muscle mass.
I blame bodybuilding for promoting the stereotype that weights are only good for getting huge and muscular.
Tbh your friend would be better served by doing Crossfit type workouts. Transform will possibly stop by at some stage. He knows his stuff! :)
If you want to just say that crossfit is awesome and you love it and that it cures cancer...that is fine by me...by all means go ahead and put it in your signature...but to try and suggest that aerobic exercise by it nature is bad and that 'crossfit' by it's nature is good is just plain ridiculous and I don't think does anyone any favours.

If you want me to pick a crossfit wod and compare it with aerobic level cycling, jogging or swimming in terms of potential catabolism I'm sure I can find something for you in terms of muscloskeletal damage and metabolic byproduct production.

Let me ask you this...how many people have you seen vomit in the gym...on a rower, bike or treadmill...or in the pool?

Do you know if anyone has ever vomitted as a result of a WOD at crossfit?

Do you know what 'catabolic' even means?

yes at close to 10pm and coudlnt be bothered popping into each and every thread just for the sake of a debate. Hope your dd is fully recovered this morning Transform.

Re the O.P, it seems you friend didn't do weights as she was losing weights but she can still start now & it would probably helps pull all her flabby bits in. I lost 75% of my weight (2 stone) before I started doing weights. And it did help reduce my measurements for sure.

Don't worry...there wasn't anything to debate here...we could have used you over in the '6 meals vs 3 meals' thread...posters were falling like flies over there...they could have usd your support...even if you went down in flames with the rest of them.

She must have been really putting in on Fran...you shouldn't be pushing her so hard she gets rhabdo though....do you not know how catabolic that is.

It's pretentious and self absorbed to raise it in the first place g'em.

I'm sure he's not the only one here that had a bad day yesterday. I bet he's not the only one caring for a sick family member.

I don't see anyone else ducking for cover and using their sick child as a shield.

Maybe we can all change our signatures and list our problems/issues of the day so people can always put our posts in context?

Will, you called out Transform on this thread and he understandably felt the need to defend himself and explain why he'd " been round all day [but] neither he nor anyone else at crossfit would touch this post with a barge pole" To my mind making comments about other people's sick kids is not fair game on this forum. If you want to discuss it further I'll gladly do so over PM but this is not the place for it and I'd ask that you let this thread get back on topic - that goes to all posters in fact.

    Absolutely.

Doing some well programmed resistance training and increasing her lean muscle mass is only going to be of benefit...not just cosmetically but general health wise.

Note:Hope you are well and that everything is as it should be in your life and that no harm befalls you or any family or friends in the forseeable future and I apologise in advance if anything I have said or done in this post causes you any emotional distress.
