Bloody nipples and chafing where?

Late in the day I know but I've decided to log my meagre attempts at the completion of The (Queue Music) Dublin City Marathon :eek::eek:

I am 34 years old, male and used to watch films where people would run for an amazing amount of time chasing down a bad guy - like 7/8 minutes and I'd wonder how they did it without dropping dead.

Couch Potato you say? Nope! Overweight? Nope - actually the contrary! Spent 12 years working as a printer and throwing boxes and reams of paper about kept me quite trim, then I moved to Sales and 2 years later was suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome due to stress which should actually be called Agonising Life Altering Nightmare Syndrome or ALANS:D.

My doctor suggested excercise as part of my 'treatment', so I took off one evening back in April like a scene from Chariots of Fire - out the front door, across the green like a stallion and out of direct sight of any of my neighbours (which was about .2 of a mile from the house) I was dizzy, felt sick and I'm sure could have haunted a house with my colour.

Flashforward to last Saturday when I ran 15.4 miles with almost 20 others and Mr Slow has now become Mr GonnaGiveTheMarathonaLash.

Why am I running it? Because I was advised not to.;) not for any health reasons but as Will Smith said in The Pursuit of Happiness ' People can't do somethin' themselves, they wanna tell you you can't do it. If you want somethin', go get it. Period.'

I've changed my lifestyle and I ain't going back.

Best of luck with the log mrslow! It's a great way to track your progress, and keep you motivated, but you don't need any more of that, you seem 100% committed to DCM 2010 :D Happy, injury free training to you!

Thanks Ruby, obsessed is probably more accurate. What about you with your 25 mile plus LSR? Are you shattered?

My new perfect Mizuno's arrived today, I'm a child with a new toy.:D:D:D:D

I think there's a bit of obsession in everyone who is training for a marathon. It's a must ;)

Bet you are dying to give them a test run! I got a pair last month (only had Asics before) and I'm really happy with them. Guy in the shop said to take a good week to break them in, so I did my LSR that week in my Asics, and shorter runs in the Mizuno's.

I'll run all my runs this week in them cause 15.4 in my old ones really hurt my feet and every step became painful towards the end because the cushioning is worn out. Roll on 18:D

And it's about time too you had a log, like the rest of us! You better make it a good one (i've high hopes!), we want to see the blood and guts side please:D

Good luck but we all know your 100% committed to the DCM and you'll be crossing that finish line, blue knees and all on the day!

Good luck with the log mrslow. A great way to stay motivated. Not that you need any motivation

Keeping a log is a fantastic way of tracking progress and keeping up the motivation when it flags. Best of luck with the DCM training, you'll have no problems getting around!

Best of luck with the log and hopefully I'll be able to catch you guys for another LSR soon :)

I'm excited about every run I do, I absolutely love it. Has to be said though Saturday's run was tough at the end on my feet - My brand new glistening Mizunos should help with that (ha ha JEmily) this week on 18 miles - I hope.

Which Mizuno model did you get? I was put in a pair of them a few months ago but they weren't right for me at all... Good time to get a new pair of shoes, but I'd be wary of using them for 18 miles at the weekend if without a few weeks of breaking them in.

I think you should be made do 20 miles as punishment, not fair:mad:

Ya should have called the log 'My Two Blue Knees'. Everyone gets chaffing and the painful nipples but how many people have blue knees?

Good luck with the log and the training.

I got the wave creation 11's, they're my perfect runner - I bought the 10th generation recently and they caused me major issues, I don't forsee any problems with the 18 in them because they feel just like my older pair but with more cushioning.

Took my new runners for a test drive last night and lashed along pain and knee support free, 4 miles in 33 minutes. Ever since the physio loosened my groin my stride is longer and I find it hard to go slower on the short runs.:D

I get to choose the route tonight for my 8 miler with The Wexican so will be keeping it nice and easy, he's taking care of Saturday's so I'll need all the rest I can get.

Anyone else make a point of saluting fellow runners, I do, unfortunately in my locality it ain't reciprocated - I'm expecting the classic ' what you lookin at' any day now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 641 ✭✭✭JEmily

Ha, i went out on my 4 miler last night too, but without new runners in tow:(

God, your pace is picking up...go you!

I totally smile like an idiot at any runner that passes me. Even driving by runners in my car i feel like yelling out the window, "go on, keep going".

I beeped at two forty something women one day because it was raining and they were going hell for leather, I was in a really happy place and wanted to cheer them on.......they flipped me the bird:o

My god you are quiet today, you must actually be working today for once;)

P.S. only 3 more sleeps till the 18 miler.

8 miles last night and I wasn't really looking forward to it, my legs are moving differently albeit better since my physio session and subsequent stretching/strenghtening routine so my thighs have become the driving force and are sore after Saturdays session but it went well.

Met The Wexican in the park and off we went on a planned 9 min mile pace, it was around mile 4 when we actually slowed to 8:50 and with the hills on the Military road side the pace came down to an average 9:30. It got dark very quickly after mile 6 and with no lighting was proving difficult to get a decent (and safe) footfall. We then came upon the seventh mile marker * - the rear end of the Furry Glen, where we were greeted by Julian and Francis, two hairy bikers from Louth engaging in a game of Ring a Ring a Rosy - Their offer to join them in a 'piggy back' race through the Glen was graciously turned down and we completed the last mile in a brisk 2 and a half minutes.

*Part of the tale may be exaggerated or simply made up for pure entertainment value.

How you get on last night? I enjoyed my pamper night, facial and dinner.

They thought our runners would be in at 4pm yesterday, but then they obviously didn't come in as no call:( I'm hoping (and praying!) it will be today.

Went out yesterday evening with my shiny new Garmin :D:D:D:D

Had intended running at 9 min mile pace but couldn't, averaged 8:21. I'm repeating myself but since physio I'm not driving forward with my inner thighs anymore, I'm using the larger muscles which makes pace faster and easier but these muscles aren't used to it and are in a bit of shock:eek:

Wowzers, look at you, you'll have to change your name soon to mrfast. Or mrfaster:D

Hopefully your shorter runs will be breaking in those new muscles for your LSR's.

Agonising LSR just shy of 17 miles, my IT Band flared up big time at 9.4 miles and had to quit at 16.9 and limp 2 miles plus back to the car feeling very sorry for myself:( I'm annoyed because I'm fit and strong enough to cover the distance - if my knee was out of the equation I could have upped the pace - back to physio tomorrow, hope she can work her magic.

Sorry to hear about your lsr. Do you have a foam roller? I had knee problems earlier in the year and find the foam roller great, use it all the time. Hope the physio can sort you out.

Thanks Blueskye. I got one last week, only started with it in the last few days though, physio will reset IT Band:eek: tommorow and I'll be fine for a few weeks at least, might just schedule sessions close to the next LSR and DCM.

Ah sh*te mrslow, really sorry to read that :( That's so frustrating - you've been unlucky with injury (yet, still managing to do fantastic runs inbetween)! Fingers & blistered toes crossed that you can get this sorted asap.

    Hi Chinguetti,

She'll torture me for a while and I'll be good as new, I think it struck again after all the jumping side to side etc avoiding puddles on Saturday morning.

    How did your race go?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,555 ✭✭✭chinguetti

Well, you know the way i was on about hills last week. Well there was a steep hill straight from the start, then a bit of downhill and then a hill of about 250 feet over a mile or so which was the first lap and then we did it again. Make the Kyber look like a pimple.:D Bloody steep hill and too many sharp bends on gravel as well.

The course was a bit daft in my opinion, at least one guy collapsed, saw another covered in bandages and heard another guy fell as well.

So compared to them poor fellas, i'm not too bad apart from stiff legs and tight hamstrings. Going for a sports massage myself tomorrow night.

Make sure you ask all the questions regarding exercises for the ITBs from the physio and remember the pain will be for the greater good when you're heading up to 26 miles this times 7 weeks.:)

She's already worked wonders for me, this is a set back but I'll be fine.

You around on Sat, my plan is to run the half route again but starting at Knockmaroon and adding on a bit at the end to make 15.

Can't make Saturday so i'm doing my lsr of 18 on Sunday. By any chance does Sunday suit you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 641 ✭✭✭JEmily

Well? How painful was it? Your very quiet today, must have been a good session;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,554 ✭✭✭Mr Slow

    Physio Session.

Laura likes to use her elbows to stretch the IT Band, she uses oil to reduce friction and with her limited height and weight can only exert so much pressure. Mark on the other hand is 6ft and naturally stronger, he too uses his elbows but also his fingers pressing into my leg like knives. He spent a long time twanging my IT Band on my knee to break down scar tissue. My leg is so swollen today my son hugged my leg this morning and I screamed like a little girl.

It was an hour of hell, the kind of pain that makes you sweat.

I also may have to endure that twice more before DCM.:(

Screaming like a little girl means (in my mind) that you'll be thankful of it as it will keep you right for the running. Just remember in your head that there's 'No pain, no gain' and 'Pain is my friend'.

Did you ever think of Yoga/Pilates classes to assist the ITB/the legs as i find the stretches helpful to loosen out the legs and i do see the benefits of it.
