Not a thread subject line I thought I'd ever type! Just a few miles from Christchurch (4/5 am there).

Residents of Christchurch are said to be shaken by the experience.

I'd love to have sex during an earthquake. Just throw it in and let nature take it's course.

Probably just like slapping the arse of a fat chic (if you had to stomach to ride one) and riding the wave's.

Lads, jokes in a thread like this is just shocking. Just shake after hours up a bit and give some serious replies.

Well, it was a 7.4, so you'd need to call the fat chic by her sisters name too.

The USGS has downgraded it to a 7.0 magnitude. Whenever I hear about a major earthquake, my first stop is the USGS PAGER page for the quake: it estimates how many people were affected, and how badly. According to that, about 10,000 people west of Christchurch got the worst of it - not much news yet. :(

The other metric I look at is the depth of the earthquake. This one was centrered 12km down, which is shallow, and that correlates with a lot of shaking at ground level. The Haiti earthquake back in January was a little deeper (16km).

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

I take it NZ doesn't normally get quakes?

The country experiences more than 14,000 earthquakes a year, of which only around 20 have a magnitude in excess of 5.0.

There was a 7.6'ish one down there last year at about this time when I was there. Most of them you'd not notice though.

Sounds a bit more serious than I thought it would be. Looks like the whole world shares one thing, as soon as **** goes down ya start looting.

The only person I know living there is Rabies, and I only know him from his posts here.
I hope he's ok. He seems like a really nice person.

Hopefully nobody was seriously hurt or killed.

In honour of Rabies, I'm going to F11 this thread. I know he'd see the funny side.

Rabies is in Auckland, afaik. Got in touch with OH's family there before. Thankfully they are ok. Only the TV fell off the shelf and through the floor and the local BP collapsed. We were quite worried for a bit as the news named his mams street and said it was torn up

Actually, there are no reports of fatalities yet but the pictures are pretty crazy. It woke us up and we're quite far north of that on a different island. (We're in Wellington).

Scary stuff. I've checked the earthquake kit to make sure we have enough of everything. They're been predicting a big one that will flatten Wellington to happen soon for the last 20 years.

That's crazy. I was out there a few years ago and it seems like a real peaceful quiet city. I'd say the quake woke em up!

I loved those sunscreen/rainprotectors they had on the outside of CBD buildings in Aus/Nz. I always figured they were part of the building structure itself. I guess not.

Remind me not to walk under one of them in future.
