    Either.
Setting it to Ireland if you can get the uk channels puts rte in position 1 on the epg.
Setting to UK puts the irish in the 800's.

Ireland for the Saorview channels with an MPEG-4 compatible TV.

Remember not all freeview TVs can receive the Irish MPEG-4 channels in either setting.

    If the TV has MHEG-5.

Setting it to UK could in some cases disable the VHF tuner for analogue terrestrial RTÉ 1&2 or cable TV reception.

The digital channels are tuned in the 800s if the TV is installed as "UK" in the setup menu of our Philips. So I stick to Ireland. No MHEG-5 but that's something I can live with:)

Even though (some) Cable networks in the UK do use VHF

Given that we some of us get overspill signals from the Republic (on VHF in some cases) What should those of us in Northern Ireland set our tellies to ?

I thought I've read posts here stating there was no VHF cable whatsoever in the UK which was the reason in the past not to buy a TV from the UK as it would not have a VHF tuner?

If I set any of my Sony TVs to UK the VHF tuner is disabled. I would be unable to advise you which setting you should use in NI, I guess it would be whichever service you wish to have if you have a Sony TV, could be different for other manufacturers.

The OP is from Waterford I believe so his setup will be different from a NI viewer.

Well the cable in Belfast uses VHF and UHF. Most of the channels are encrypted but theres about half a dozen FTA.
Last time I checked there were still some analouge signals (not sure why but there was)

Never understood why (many) TV's in the UK are sold without VHF tuners. Surely the cost savings are negligible and outweighed by the costs involved in having separate models for UK and RoI (and lost sales in parts of NI which get RTE on VHF) Some sets have VHF tuners but its often difficult to know when buying (and salespeople usually havent a clue what one is talking about)

Are the FTA on VHF or UHF? A bit awkward if you only have a UHF set.

Any or all of the following
    - included in the manual spec
    - UK freeview and/or Irish Saorview certified
    - displays Digital Aertel in the Ireland and/or UK setting

Mostly UHF but Channel 5 was(/is ?) also on VHF (no idea why ?) and the picture is slightly better

Dunno what the setup in L/Derry or the various mainland UK networks is.

some TV's, noticeably Samsung, have MHEG5, but only enable it if UK is selected, it's disabled if you choose ireland as country

My brother's Samsung in the Ireland setting displays normal teletext on RTÉ 1&2, TG4 but on RTÉ News Now it displays MHEG-5 digital Aertel.

It appears if traditional teletext is available it take priority over MHEG-5 text, the Saorview spec give priority to MHEG-5 text.

how oldis the samung? my new model picks up no teletext from RTE news now, and traditional analog teletext from RET1 and RTE2. it has a setting in the menu to enable MHEG5, but that setting is only active if UK is set as the country

    It's the 22" with the built-in DVD player, B470 I think.

EDIT: Can confirm it is a Samsung LE22B470, checked it this afternoon. MHEG-5 Digital Aertel is working on the RTÉ News Now and RTÉNL HD Test channels. Normal teletext on RTÉ 1&2, TG4. No teletext on the RTÉNL 1 test channel.
