So I'll stick with the tennies :)

    2000-2010: Aughts (boom and excess).

2011-2020: Aught/Ought Nots (recession and austerity).

You are a year late. The new decade started a year ago.

By your logic 2000 and 2001 are in different decades and we should have celebrated Y2K when it was 2001 not 2000.

2000-2009 are the zeros as far as I'm concerned and thats what I refer the decade as when speaking to people. The naughties is riduculous. I could understand naughts but naughties is stupid. And who says naught, everyone says zero.
Just continues the rule by putting by going plural. Eighties, nineties, zeros, tens.

2010-2019 are the tens as far as I'm concerned. The teenies is just ridiculous. what about 2010,2011 and 2012. Tens is the best solution.

How come one of your decades has one more year in it than the other?

im gonna call them the Oneder years not O-Neder years but the ONEder years:D

But lads sure we were in the tens (or whatever you want to call it) last year. If 2010 was part of the naughties then 1990 would have been in the 1980s.. Think about it

You would be correct if our calendar started from year zero, however the first year was 1AD ( or 1CE if you prefer). For this reason 2001 started the new century and the new decade starts this year.

I agree about calling it the Tens. Happy New Year.

Its annoying that we don't have a certain name for the first two decades so far. We all knew the 70s, 80s, 90s, but we didn't even have a certain name for the 2000s.

No we have heard "Twenty Ten" for 2010, but I am not sure.

A good point. That's according to the gregorian calendar. According to the astronomical calendar the first year was year 0.

The point i was making though was that people would consider 1990 part of the '90s so if you are being consistent you can't say 2011 is the first year of the new decade.

The next crushing part of the recessions years or Cetlic Tiger Fallout years.

the ess don't work until 1920, 1 and 2 are unique in that regard.

I´m a little bit Rain Man about this but I don´t like odd numbered years. 2011 just sounds crap. Can´t wait ´till next year.

1990 was the first year of the '90s but the decade didn't officially start until 1991. I blame the Romans for this confusion - maybe it makes sense in their numerals!

But if you recall this was a debate at the time. Some anally retentive types were insisting that the new Millenium started at 2001 not 2000. I can't remember the argument at the time but I remember it was logical and probably correct. However not having aspergers syndrome I saw the aesthetic and symmetrical appeal and also common sense as most others did of having 2000 be the official turn of the Millenium. Man **** was overpriced that night

This decade has already started. It goes from 1/1/2010 to 31/12/2019. 2020 will be the start of the "twenties" I presume.

There were a few ppl on the soccer forum suggesting that the last decade went from 2001-2010. Never heard anything so ridiculous in all my days. So what decade did 2000 fall into so?

When I'm old I'll probably refer back to this decade as the Twenty Tens.
