    Hey lads

A question that came to my mind.

what if I buy a 2 litre diesel car with low emissions and the manufacturer year is 2001, but I import it from UK and register it now. would I be able to pay road tax according to my CO2 emissions???

doesnt matter it goes by orignal forst registration date...
same as the car will get a 2001 reg plate not a 2011 reg plate...

The VRT on cars first registered before is calculated based on emissions but the motor tax is based on cc on pre 2008 cars. 2008 registered cars first registered prior to June 2008 have a choice to go with emissions or cc whichever is cheapest. More details here... www.motortax.ie

It goes by the date of first registration, which would be the date it was registered in UK if you were importing from UK to Ireland.

Because the Co2 tax bands are merely subsidies for the rich.

expect Co2 tax bands to go through the roof once '08 and later cars become cheap.

    eg. Range Rover Sport tax

    Old system: €1566
    New system: €2100

I think alot of cars benefited from the new tax system and not just the big Range Rovers.

But isn't that entire system going to have to be 're calibrated' soon enough though?

As in, once everyone starts moving onto post 2008 low carbon diesels, then the tax take from motor tax will dive.

So the 'average' low carbon car motor tax rate will have to go up to the average pre 2008 rate to maintain Government revenues at a time when the state is broke.

But they can hardly keep increasing the pre 2008 rate (a 1.7 diesel is already at 500 quid plus).

So could we see relative parity in 2/3 years between the cc and carbon tax systems?

(I'm looking at 2006/7 diesels at the moment and trying to weigh up whether it's worth it going the extra money to pay for an 2008 when the motor tax benefits may be gone in 2 years time).

So then we'll be paying "VRT" on everything we buy in Tesco's as hauliers costs go up.

Thought about that. I could manage without Tesco tbh. Isn't it the case that if it was a vat hike as opposed to duty the hauliers etc would escape?

My 2 litre turbo diesel has c02 of 165, but because its a 2005 model I pay based on engine size 614 euros compared to 447 euros if based on emissions.

    BAD government decisions

Didn't realise cowen was on here. My statement is about the more well off can afford cars that have tax based on c02,while the regular person is stuck paying the higher tax based on engine size, cockface

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

That really is more of a question than a dilemma.....also I object to your misuse of the word 'interesting'......

Whenever he bought it, he bought it knowing the price of motor tax. Whinging that someone else is paying less doesnt change the decision he took in the first place.

What about all the high end cars whos motor tax went up post 08? Is that the rich being pandered to again or do we conveniently leave that out? The 150k + or whatever the numbers were of people buying new cars each year over the last decade, were they all rich people? I'll go out on a limb here and say theres been plenty of people buying 2nd hand pre 08 cars for more money than they could have bought a new car on a low tax bracket, the new car may have been small and not what they wanted but it's available cheaper all the same. Are you "rich" if you spend 8-9k on a new Clio or Yaris but a memvber of the poor downtroddden classes if you spend 10k on a 2nd hand 5 series?
