can any one tell what is the least acceptable energy rating in ft/lb for a clean kill on vermin.....ie what kinda energy would you still need to be behind a round to kill a rabbit cleanly.... both head shot... and a body shot....

ratio of 10-1 is acceptable, most prefer 13-1 min

if you're talking about airgun hunting the advised ft/lbs to humanely kill is 1.5 ft/lbs but only a headshot to the brain area. Ive shot rabbits with my sons airgun at 20 yds which shots .177 pellets at 5.67 ft/lbs

Andy I'd say at it's maximum range of close on 1 mile it still retains enough energy to kill.

From an old post here on the forums. (I save everything to my favorites list :))

    Airgun
    .22 airgun pellet, 20 gr. @ 800fps:

The maximum range of your Custom .22 airgun pellet 20 gr. at 800 Feet per Second is:
374.5 yards at an elevation angle of 26 degrees.

Maximum altitude: 180 Feet @ 256 Yards downrange
    Velocity at
    point of impact: 110 Ft/Sec
Energy at point of impact: 0.5 Ft/Lbs (0.68 Joules)
    Flight time: 6.5 seconds

    Rimfire
Winchester Rimfire .22 LR, 40 gr. Super X PowerPoint LHP
The maximum range of your Winchester Rimfire .22 LR, 40 gr. Super X PowerPoint LHP at 1280 Feet per Second is:
1635.5 yards at an elevation angle of 29 degrees.

Maximum altitude: 842 Feet @ 1075 Yards downrange
    Velocity at
    point of impact: 257 Ft/Sec
Energy at point of impact: 5.9 Ft/Lbs (8 Joules)
